This study tackled mislabeling fraud in vegetable oils, driven by price disparities and profit motives, by developing an approach combining desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) with a shallow convolutional neural network (SCNN). The method was designed to characterize lipids and distinguish between nine vegetable oils: corn, soybean, peanut, sesame, rice bran, sunflower, camellia, olive, and walnut oils. The optimized DESI-MS method enhanced the ionization of non-polar glycerides and detected ion adducts like [TG + Na], [TG + NH].

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common arthritis type marked by cartilage breakdown and bone changes, with recent research highlighting the NLRP3 inflammasome's role in OA-related inflammation.
  • Triptolide (TP), known for its anti-inflammatory properties, was tested on chondrocytes, showing reduced levels of critical inflammatory markers and matrix degradation indicators.
  • The study suggests TP could effectively reduce inflammation in OA by targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome and related signaling pathways, indicating its potential as a therapeutic option for managing OA.

Background: The incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) is increasing, yet its pathogenesis remains largely unknown. Recent studies suggest that abnormal subchondral bone remodeling plays a crucial role in OA development, highlighting a gap in clinical treatments targeting this aspect. Soybean Isoflavone (SI) has shown potential in treating OA, although its mechanisms are not fully understood.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperuricemia, a condition leading to gout, is often caused by high activity of xanthine oxidase, which produces uric acid.
  • This study found that lower bilirubin levels are linked to higher uric acid levels in patients with new-onset hyperuricemia and advanced gout.
  • Researchers showed that bilirubin could reduce uric acid levels in mice by enhancing liver function and cellular processes, suggesting it might offer a new approach for managing hyperuricemia in humans.

5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) is a first-line agent in both remission and maintenance therapy for ulcerative colitis (UC). However, the mucosal concentration of 5-ASA was significantly lower in patients with severe histological inflammation, which further led to a poor response to 5-ASA treatment. Our study aimed to clarify the mechanism of 5-ASA uptake into colonic epithelial cells and to further explore the reason for the decreased colonic mucosal 5-ASA concentration in UC patients.

Background: The genes related to the cell cycle progression could be considered the key factors in human cancers. However, the genes involved in cell cycle regulation in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have not yet been reported. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the genes related to the cell cycle in all types of cancers, especially NSCLC.

February 2023

Department of Fundus Surgery, Eye Hospital and School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou 325027, Zhejiang Province, China.

Aim: To identify the risk factors for postoperative proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in patients with primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and develop a nomogram for predicting postoperative PVR-free probability.

Methods: A total of 741 patients (741 eyes) diagnosed with primary RRD who underwent first surgery in the same hospital were retrospectively reviewed and randomly assigned with 521 to the training set and 220 to the validation set. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed in the training cohort to determine risk factors to construct a nomogram for predicting the 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-month postoperative PVR-free probabilities.

To investigate whether adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) is associated with survival rate of osteosarcoma patients. A total of 3938 osteosarcoma patients between 1975 and 2016 from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were enrolled in this study. Survival rate was obtained by Kaplan-Meier method, with log-rank test identifying the difference.

Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) rarely occur in the duodenum, and only a few cases have been reported. Its clinical manifestations are not specific, and the imaging examination results are not typical, so a preoperative diagnosis is difficult. Pathologic examinations and genetic testing after surgical resection are the main diagnostic methods.

Emergency and Critical Care Center, Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital (Affiliated People's Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College), No. 158 Shangtang Road, Gongshu District, Hangzhou, 310014, Zhejiang, China.

Background: Long-term inhalation of cigarette smoke is considered to be one of the main causes of bronchial epithelioid cell damage, but its underlying mechanism has to be further clarified.

Methods: Gene expression at mRNA level and protein levels were detected by qRT-PCR and western blot analysis respectively. CCK-8, TUNEL assays, ELISA, western blot analysis and commercial kits were utilized to test cell viability, apoptosis inflammatory response and oxidative stress.

Transcriptome analysis is used to study gene expression in human tissues. It can promote the discovery of new therapeutic targets for related diseases by characterizing the endocrine function of pancreatic physiology and pathology, as well as the gene expression of pancreatic tumors. Compared to whole-tissue RNA sequencing, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) can detect transcriptional activity within a single cell.
