Mechanisms of Small Intestine Involvement in Obesity-Induced Atherosclerosis.

Diabetes Metab Syndr Obes

June 2023

Department of Internal Medicine, Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, Hebei, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: Studies have shown that atherosclerotic plaques are associated with changes in the microbial composition of the intestinal flora and obesity, and that the small intestine plays an irreplaceable role in regulating intestinal flora homeostasis, but the role of the small intestine in the development of obesity-related atherosclerosis remains understudied. Therefore, this study explores the role of the small intestine in obesity-induced atherosclerosis and its molecular mechanisms.

Methods: In the GSE59054 data, small intestine tissue samples from 3 normal and 3 obese mice were analyzed using bioinformatics methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Preclinical and clinical studies suggest that Panax notoginseng saponins, specifically Xuesaitong soft capsules, may have protective effects for patients with ischemic stroke, but concrete evidence in humans is limited.
  • A randomized clinical trial conducted in China involved 2966 participants with ischemic stroke, assessing the effectiveness of Xuesaitong versus a placebo over three months.
  • Results showed that 89.3% of patients in the Xuesaitong group achieved functional independence compared to 82.4% in the control group, indicating that Xuesaitong is a potentially safe and effective treatment alternative for ischemic stroke recovery.*

Obesity, which is driven by inflammation and oxidative stress, is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, is an antidiabetic drug with major effects on weight loss. In this study, single-cell transcriptomics was used to examine non-cardiomyocytes to uncover the mechanism of obesity-induced myocardial damage and the cardioprotective impact of semaglutide.

Semaglutide alleviates inflammation-Induced endothelial progenitor cells injury by inhibiting MiR-155 expression in macrophage exosomes.

Int Immunopharmacol

June 2023

Department of Internal Medicine, Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, China; Department of Endocrinology, Hebei General Hospital, Shijiazhuang, China. Electronic address:

The low-grade inflammatory state in obesity can damage vascular endothelial cells and lead to several cardiovascular diseases. Macrophage exosomes improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in obese mice, and yet it is unclear how it relates to endothelial cell injury. Firstly, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophage exosomes were co-cultured with endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to examine the function of EPCs and the level of inflammatory factors.

Objective: To investigate the effect of bradykinin (BK) on cisplatin (DDP)-induced cardiotoxicity at the cellular level and its cytological mechanism.

Methods: The toxic effects of DDP on GP-H1 cells, and the effects of BK on DDP cardiomyocyte survival rate, DDP-induced malondialdehyde (MDA), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondria membrane potential (MMP) and apoptosis were explored.

Results: DDP at different concentrations inhibited GP-H1 cells at 12 h after administration, and the inhibitory effect was more prominent at 24 h after administration and continued until 72 h after administration.

Canagliflozin ameliorates epithelial-mesenchymal transition in high-salt diet-induced hypertensive renal injury through restoration of sirtuin 3 expression and the reduction of oxidative stress.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

April 2023

Department of Internal Medicine, Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China; Department of Geriatric Cardiology, Hebei General Hospital, Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China. Electronic address:

Hypertensive nephropathy is characterized by long-term damage to renal tissues by chronic uncontrolled hypertension, and ultimately leads to the development of renal fibrosis. The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) potentially contributes to the promotion of renal fibrosis in chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this study, we investigated the potential roles of canagliflozin (Cana) on renal EMT and oxidative stress through its effects on sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) expression.
