Previous studies demonstrated that the pathophysiological changes after temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) such as oxidative stress, inflammatory reaction contribute to cognitive defect and neuronal damage. The present study was conducted to evaluate the anticonvulsant effect of wogonin ameliorates kainate-induced TLE, and to investigate the mechanism underlying these effects. Rats were divided into control, wogonin, kainate, and wogonin-pretreated kainate groups.

Hepatocarcinoma-intestine-pancreas/pancreatitis-associated protein (HIP/PAP), a C-type lectin, exerts anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, anti-apoptotic, and mitogenic functions in several cell types and tissues. In this study, we explored the role of HIP/PAP in pulmonary fibrosis (PF). Expression of HIP/PAP and its murine counterpart, Reg3B, was markedly increased in fibrotic human and mouse lung tissues.

Introduction: Spinal cord impact is a mature method for building models of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, a common problem is that the degree of elicited paralysis may not be identical even though animals receive the same impact. We hypothesize that this difference may be caused by the difference in the secondary injury mechanism of SCI and there might be an impact dosage named "median paralyzing dose (PD)", similar as the "median lethal dose (LD)" in pharmacology.

Perspectives: To evaluate the treatment outcome of vasodilator prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) in treating sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and to determine its effects on platelet activation, as reflected by changes in CD62p and PAC-1.
Methods: We prospectively enrolled 60 patients with confirmed SSNHL and randomly divided them into two groups: the SSNHL group received regular therapy, and the SSNHL-PGE1 group received additional intravenous injection of PGE1. After 14 days of treatment, we measured clinical improvement and CD62p-positive and PAC-1-positive platelets.

The present study was aimed to explore the neuroprotective role of imatinib in global ischemia-reperfusion-induced cerebral injury along with possible mechanisms. Global ischemia was induced in mice by bilateral carotid artery occlusion for 20 min, which was followed by reperfusion for 24 h by restoring the blood flow to the brain. The extent of cerebral injury was assessed after 24 h of global ischemia by measuring the locomotor activity (actophotometer test), motor coordination (inclined beam walking test), neurological severity score, learning and memory (object recognition test) and cerebral infarction (triphenyl tetrazolium chloride stain).

Hepatocarcinoma-intestine-pancreas/pancreatitis-associated protein (HIP/PAP) has antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mitogenic, and antiapoptotic effects and thus exerts important functions in the maintenance of integrity and homeostasis of several organs, such as the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and liver. Although the potent hepatoprotective effect of HIP/PAP has been validated, its impact on liver fibrosis has not been reported. In this study, we evaluated the role of HIP/PAP on hepatic fibrosis and explored the possible underlying mechanisms.

The purpose of the current study was to demonstrate the neuroprotective effect of protodioscin (Prot) in an in vitro model of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and investigate the underlying molecular mechanism. After PC12 cells were exposed to oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) reperfusion, PI staining by flow cytometry was used to quantify the rate of apoptosis. The levels of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined using commercially available kits.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are emerging as novel modulators in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia (PE). Multiple miRNAs have been shown to regulate the proliferation and invasion of trophoblast cells, which play a critical role in successful pregnancies. miR-652-3p has been identified as a novel disease-associated miRNA that is dysregulated in various pathological processes.

Opa-interacting protein 5 antisense RNA 1 (OIP5-AS1) is a long intergenic noncoding RNA, which has been suggested to be dysregulated in human cancers and served as tumor suppressor or promoter depending on tumor types. However, the role of OIP5-AS1 in bladder cancer was still unknown. In our study, OIP5-AS1 was overexpressed in bladder cancer, and associated with clinical progression and short overall survival.

G231V and F198S mutations in surfactant protein A2 (SP-A2) are associated with familial pulmonary fibrosis. These mutations cause defects in dimer/trimer assembly, trafficking, and secretion, as well as cause mutant protein aggregation. We investigated the effects and mechanisms of chemical chaperones on the cellular and biochemical properties of mutant SP-A2.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been suggested as pivotal regulators in the pathological process of cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of miR-135a in regulating neuronal survival in cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury using an in vitro cellular model induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/R). Our results showed that miR-135a expression was significantly decreased in neurons with OGD/R treatment.

Carbon monoxide-releasing molecule (CORM-2) acts as a carbon monoxide (CO) deliverer in a more controlled manner without altering carboxyhemoglobin level and exerts potential function in inhibiting inflammation and/or acute nociception. However, the regulatory mechanism of CORM-2 on spinal nerve ligation (SNL)-induced neuropathic pain is not currently clear. Our study aims to investigate the role of CORM-2 in neuropathic pain and the underlying mechanism.

In acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS), pathogenesis is associated with the regulation of macrophage-generated oxidative stress, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase (NOX)-derived reactive oxygen species(ROS) are key to regulating oxidative stress. In the present study, we found that miR-19 inhibited the expression of p47phox in macrophages, resulting in the alleviation of the lipopolysaccharides(LPS)-induced inflammatory response. In a mouse LPS-induced model of lung injury, miR-19-deficient murine lung tissue was more susceptible to inflammatory responses and exhibited a higher infiltration rate, a higher number of inflammatory cells in the lungs, a higher level of inflammatory cytokines in the Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and more severe pathological damage in lung tissues.

The functional roles and clinical significances of miR-590-3p in ICC remain unclear. In the current study, we investigated the expression of miR-590-3p in tissues and sera of ICC by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We found miR-590-3p was significantly down-regulated in the sera and tissues of ICC patients, especially in those patients with lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis.

Rationale: The occurrence of primary cutaneous diffuse large B cell lymphoma-other (PCDLBCL-O) has been rarely reported in the literature. Its diagnosis is based on histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. To improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment for PCDLBCL-O, we report a case of PCDLBCL-O successfully treated by the combination of R-CHOP (A chemotherapy protocol consists of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone plus Rituximab) chemotherapy and surgery.
