Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis is a severe condition caused by an uncontrolled immune response to infections, and finding the genetic factors involved is crucial for better treatments.
  • Research used a combination of advanced methods and data to discover genes related to sepsis, identifying two risk genes and five protective genes, with a focus on the gene BEND7.
  • BEND7, found mainly in platelets, influences immune interactions, suggesting that targeting BEND7-positive platelets could lead to new ways to treat sepsis.

Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Imaging and Interventional Medicine, Zhejiang Engineering Research Center of Interventional Medicine Engineering and Biotechnology, Key Laboratory of Precision Medicine of Lishui City, The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Lishui 323000, China; Department of Radiology, The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Lishui 323000, China. Electronic address:

Rationale And Objectives: This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning-based prediction model for preoperatively predicting progesterone receptor (PR) expression in meningioma patients using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Materials And Methods: The study retrospectively enrolled 739 patients with pathologically confirmed meningioma from three medical centers, dividing them into four cohorts: training (nĀ =Ā 294), internal test (nĀ =Ā 126), external test 1 (nĀ =Ā 217), and external test 2 (nĀ =Ā 102). Radiomics characteristics were derived from T2-weighted and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MRI images, followed by feature selection.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) has been linked to T helper 17 (Th17) cells in prior investigations, but the evidence remains inconclusive. To gain a deeper understanding of this potential connection, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: A comprehensive search for relevant studies published up to July 8, 2023, was performed across PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases.

Longitudinal decline in DAT binding in Parkinson's disease: connections with sleep disturbances.

BMC Med

November 2024

Department of Neurology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou , Zhejiang, 310009, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how the dysfunction of the nigrostriatal dopamine system affects sleep disturbances in newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease patients, focusing on excessive daytime sleepiness and probable RBD.
  • Data was collected from 621 patients over four years through established sleep scales and dopamine transporter imaging.
  • Results showed a negative correlation between dopamine transporter binding ratios and sleep issues, suggesting that dopamine dysfunction and genetic factors (like the alpha-synuclein gene) significantly contribute to sleep disturbances in these patients.

  • Spaghetti knotting technology shows promise in improving LESS surgery by enhancing the operator's visual field and suturing accuracy compared to traditional knotting methods.
  • A study involving 40 junior residents found that those trained with spaghetti knotting technology completed tasks faster, used longer threads, and maintained better tissue integrity than those using conventional methods.
  • Overall, while the new technique reduced workload and improved performance in specific areas, both training methods had similar outcomes in needle insertion accuracy, knotting stability, and tissue tightness.

Titanium and its alloys are the most commonly used biometals for developing orthopedic implants to treat various forms of bone fractures and defects, but their clinical performance is still challenged by the unfavorable mechanical and biological interactions at the implant-tissue interface, which substantially impede bone healing at the defects and reduce the quality of regenerated bones. Moreover, the impaired osteogenesis capacity of patients under certain pathological conditions such as diabetes and osteoporosis may further impair the osseointegration of Ti-based implants and increase the risk of treatment failure. To address these issues, various modification strategies have been developed to regulate the implant-bone interactions for improving bone growth and remodeling .
