Sci Rep

January 2025

Key Laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering Ministry of Education, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disease, Institute of Spinal Cord Injury, Department of Histology and Embryology, Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Neuromuscular diseases usually manifest as abnormalities involving motor neurons, neuromuscular junctions, and skeletal muscle (SkM) in postnatal stage. Present in vitro models of neuromuscular interactions require a long time and lack neuroglia involvement. Our study aimed to construct rodent bioengineered spinal cord neural network-skeletal muscle (NN-SkM) assembloids to elucidate the interactions between spinal cord neural stem cells (SC-NSCs) and SkM cells and their biological effects on the development and maturation of postnatal spinal cord motor neural circuits.

Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury frequently occurs during the perioperative phase of liver surgery. Inappropriate activation of STING signaling can trigger excessive inflammation response to aggravate hepatic I/R injury. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an FDA-approved immunomodulatory drug used to treat multiple sclerosis and psoriasis due to its notable anti-inflammation properties.

MAIT Cell-Mediated Immune Mechanisms of Dialysis-Induced Peritoneal Fibrosis and Therapeutic Targeting.

J Am Soc Nephrol

January 2025

Nephrology Division, Department of Medicine, the Third Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, 510630, China.

Background: Peritoneal fibrosis is a serious complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) and abdominal surgeries, yet effective treatments remain elusive. Given the known roles of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells in immune responses and fibrotic diseases, we investigated their involvement in PD-induced peritoneal fibrosis to identify potential therapeutic targets.

Methods: We employed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and flow cytometry to characterize the activation and function of peritoneal MAIT cells in patients undergoing long-term PD.

NOTCH3 Mutation Causes Glymphatic Impairment and Promotes Brain Senescence in CADASIL.

CNS Neurosci Ther

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Mental and Neurological Disease Research Center, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate the role of glymphatic function of cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy, subcortical infarcts, and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), the most common monogenic small vessel disease caused by NOTCH3 mutation, and to explore potential therapeutic strategies to improve glymphatic function.

Methods: We assessed glymphatic influx and efflux function in CADASIL mouse models (Notch3) and correlated these findings with brain atrophy in CADASIL patients. We also investigated the underlying mechanisms of glymphatic impairment, focusing the expression of AQP4 in astrocytic endfeet.

Enhancing doctor-patient communication using large language models for pathology report interpretation.

BMC Med Inform Decis Mak

January 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital, No. 83, Zhongshan East Road, Guiyang, Guizhou, 550000, China.

Background: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly utilized in healthcare settings. Postoperative pathology reports, which are essential for diagnosing and determining treatment strategies for surgical patients, frequently include complex data that can be challenging for patients to comprehend. This complexity can adversely affect the quality of communication between doctors and patients about their diagnosis and treatment options, potentially impacting patient outcomes such as understanding of their condition, treatment adherence, and overall satisfaction.

: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with dietary interventions showing promise in reducing CVD risk factors. Phytosterols (PSs) in plant-based foods may reduce CVD risk by lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. However, the relationship between dietary PS intake and CVD outcomes remains inconclusive.

Lower back pain comprises the majority of the disease burden of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), while the alterations of the large-scale brain networks could be implicated in the neuropathophysiology of pain. The frontoparietal network (FPN) is known as a pain modulation hub, with key nodes dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) participating in the pain modulation and reappraisal process. In this study, we adopted the analytical approaches of independent component analysis (ICA) and seed-based correlation analysis (SCA) to examine the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the large-scale brain networks, notably FPN, between 82 AS patients and 61 healthy controls (HCs).

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic cancer treatments face challenges due to a dense extracellular matrix that prevents effective drug and immune response penetration.
  • Researchers created a hybrid nanoassembly called PLAF@P/T-PD that responds to internal and external stimuli, designed to enhance drug delivery and immune response in tumors.
  • Animal studies show this nanoassembly effectively targets primary and metastatic tumors, indicating its potential to improve treatment outcomes for pancreatic cancer.
