Background: The serum antiglycopeptidolipid core IgA antibody test has been proposed as a diagnostic tool for Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary diseases. Cross-reactivity with other nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), including Mycobacterium abscessus, indicates that it may have a role as a broader screening test for nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD). NTM-PD is believed to be underdiagnosed in patients with bronchiectasis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of Aeromonas spp. in gastroenteritis, noting its controversial status due to differing symptoms and prevalence in symptomatic versus asymptomatic patients.
  • Conducted in Northern Israel, it found that 4.24%-4.81% of patients with Aeromonas-associated gastroenteritis (AAG) and 4.9% of asymptomatic individuals had Aeromonas in their stools, raising questions about its pathogenicity.
  • Compared to Campylobacter-associated gastroenteritis (CAG) patients, AAG patients experienced significantly less severe symptoms, and certain factors like recent dining out and longer diarrhea were identified as predictors for AAG.

Three-dimensional secondary reconstruction of mistreated zygomatic fractures using patient specific surgical guides and implants.

Front Oral Health

September 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel.

Introduction: The zygomatic bone has a great impact on the anterior and lateral projection of the midface as well as the proper position of the globe. Primary alignment of zygomatic fractures is very important as secondary reconstruction is far more challenging. Treatment of misaligned zygoma requires refracturing of the bone to allow for repositioning.

Following the identification of specific epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-activating mutations, gefitinib, one of the first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), has proven efficacious in targeting NSCLC that is driven by specific EGFR-activating mutations. However, most patients who initially respond to gefitinib, develop acquired resistance. In the current study, we devised a novel strategy to enhance the efficacy of gefitinib.

New technologies developed for treatment of premature ejaculation.

Int J Impot Res

November 2024

Neuro-Urology Unit, Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel.

Premature ejaculation (PE), lifelong and acquired, is the most common male sexual disorder, with serious impacts on the patient and his partner's quality of life, sexual well-being, and psychosocial health. The most popular treatment options are on-demand topical anesthetics and off-label daily or on-demand selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), followed by behavioral therapy. While SSRI treatments are reportedly safe, they are associated with limited efficacy and provide only a temporary delay in ejaculation latency time.

Intracellular proteomics and extracellular vesiculomics as a metric of disease recapitulation in 3D-bioprinted aortic valve arrays.

Sci Adv

March 2024

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, Center for Interdisciplinary Cardiovascular Sciences, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA 02115, USA.

In calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD), mechanosensitive valvular cells respond to fibrosis- and calcification-induced tissue stiffening, further driving pathophysiology. No pharmacotherapeutics are available to treat CAVD because of the paucity of (i) appropriate experimental models that recapitulate this complex environment and (ii) benchmarking novel engineered aortic valve (AV)-model performance. We established a biomaterial-based CAVD model mimicking the biomechanics of the human AV disease-prone fibrosa layer, three-dimensional (3D)-bioprinted into 96-well arrays.
