The application of atomic force microscopy (AFM) for functional imaging and manipulating biomolecules at all levels of organization has enabled great progress in the structural biology field over the last decades, contributing to the discovery of novel structural entities of biological significance across many disciplines ranging from biochemistry, biomedicine and biophysics to molecular and cell biology, up to food systems and beyond. AFM has the capability to generate high-resolution topographic images spanning from the submolecular to the (sub)cellular range and can probe biochemical and biophysical sample properties in close to native conditions with excellent temporal resolution. Instrumental developments in the past decade enable dynamical structural and conformational studies of single biomolecules and new techniques for structural and chemical modification of the AFM probe have converted the cantilever into a versatile tool to study different biological phenomena, such as the mechanical stability of biomolecular complexes or the force induced dynamic changes of mechanically stressed proteins at the nanoscopic level.

Toxicity studies, among them hepatotoxicity, are key throughout preclinical stages of drug development to minimise undesired toxic effects that might eventually appear in the course of the clinical use of the new drug. Understanding the mechanism of injury of hepatotoxins is essential to efficiently anticipate their potential risk of toxicity in humans. Human gingival fibroblast cells (HGF-1 cells) present an important cell model to investigate the gingiva's response to inflammatory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharides from (LPS). Recently, we demonstrated -resveratrol to repress the -LPS evoked release of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) via involvement of bitter taste sensing receptor TAS2R50 in HGF-1 cells. Since HGF-1 cells express most of the known 25 TAS2Rs, we hypothesized an association between a compound's bitter taste threshold and its repressing effect on the -LPS evoked IL-6 release by HGF-1 cells.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and gold-based nanomaterials combine unique properties relevant for medicine, imaging, optics, sensing, catalysis, and energy conversion. While the Turkevich-Frens and Brust-Schiffrin methods remain the state-of-the-art colloidal syntheses of Au NPs, there is a need for more sustainable and tractable synthetic strategies leading to new model systems. Background And Aims: The European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) Lipid Clinics Network promoted a survey in order to identify and understand how and when lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is tested and clinically evaluated in lipid clinics throughout Europe, and the challenges that may prevent evaluation from being carried out.

Methods: This survey was divided into three areas of inquiry: background and clinical setting information of clinicians, questions for doctors who claimed not to measure Lp(a), in order to understand what were the reasons for not ordering the test, and questions for doctors who measure Lp(a), to investigate the use of this value in the management of patients.

Results: A total of 151 centres clinicians filled in the survey, out of 226 invited.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the longitudinal change of systemic ventricular function and atrioventricular valve (AVV) regurgitation after total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC).

Methods: In 620 patients who underwent TCPC between 1994 and 2021, 4219 longitudinal echocardiographic examinations of systemic ventricular function and AVV regurgitation were evaluated retrospectively.

Results: The most frequent primary diagnosis was hypoplastic left heart syndrome in 172, followed by single ventricle in 131, tricuspid atresia in 95 and double inlet left ventricle (LV) in 91 patients.
