Does physical fitness affect cognitive functions differently across adulthood? An advantage of being older.

Introduction: There is a large interindividual variability in cognitive functioning with increasing age due to biological and lifestyle factors. One of the most important lifestyle factors is the level of physical fitness (PF). The link between PF and brain activity is widely accepted but the specificity of cognitive functions affected by physical fitness across the adult lifespan is less understood.

Single-center initial experience with inner-branch complex EVAR in 44 patients.

Purpose: The use of inner-branch aortic stent grafts in the treatment of complex aortic pathologies aims at broad applicability and stable bridging stent sealing compared to other endovascular technologies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the early outcomes with a single manufacturer custom-made and off-the-shelf inner-branched endograft in a mixed patient cohort.

Methods: This retrospective, monocentric study between 2019 and 2022 included 44 patients treated with inner-branched aortic stent grafts (iBEVAR) as custom-made device (CMD) or off-the-shelf device (E-nside) with at least four inner branches.

Does climate-smart agriculture improve household income and food security? Evidence from Southern Ethiopia.

Climate change threatens African countries' economic development and affects agriculture and food security. Ethiopia is especially vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change because its economy is dependent on climate-sensitive livelihoods that have limited potential for adaptation. Emerging evidence indicates that climate-smart agriculture (CSA) can help smallholder farmers adapt to climate change and increase agricultural productivity, thereby enhancing household income and food security.

Modelling idiopathic intracranial hypertension in rats: contributions of high fat diet and testosterone to intracranial pressure and cerebrospinal fluid production.

Background: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a condition characterized by increased intracranial pressure (ICP), impaired vision, and headache. Most cases of IIH occur in obese women of childbearing age, though age, BMI, and female sex do not encompass all aspects of IIH pathophysiology. Systemic metabolic dysregulation has been identified in IIH with a profile of androgen excess.

Olfactory schwannomas - an enigmatic clinical entity.

Olfactory Schwannomas (OS) are a rare, benign tumour entity. Throughout literature, only few cases have been reported. We describe here a case of a 75-year-old female with a contrast enhanced mass lesion in the anterior fossa, who underwent a surgical removal and its histopathological analysis was consistent with a schwannoma.

Observational study on the neonatal outcome during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany.

Aim: We aimed to determine stillbirth, preterm birth, perinatal complications, and the developmental outcome of children born preterm during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany.

Methods: National data from the perinatal survey of preterm and term infants born in 2017-2020 between 22 March and 31 December were evaluated. Neurodevelopment of preterm infants at 2 years corrected age was tested with the Parent Report of Children's Abilities-Revised questionnaire and by clinical testing with Bayley scales, either before or during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The multi-faceted food odorant 4-methylphenol selectively activates evolutionary conserved receptor OR9Q2.

4-Methylphenol is a food-related odor-active volatile with a high recognition factor, due to its horse stable-like, fecal odor quality. Its ambivalent hedonic impact as key aroma compound, malodor, and semiochemical has spurred the search for its cognate, chemosensory odorant receptors across species. A human odorant receptor for the highly characteristic 4-methylphenol has been elusive.

Establishing comprehensive quaternary structural proteomes from genome sequence.

A critical body of knowledge has developed through advances in protein microscopy, protein-fold modeling, structural biology software, availability of sequenced bacterial genomes, large-scale mutation databases, and genome-scale models. Based on these recent advances, we develop a computational platform that; i) computes the oligomeric structural proteome encoded by an organism's genome; ii) maps multi-strain alleleomic variation, resulting in the structural proteome for a species; and iii) calculates the 3D orientation of proteins across subcellular compartments with angstrom-level precision. Using the platform, we; iv) compute the full quaternary K-12 MG1655 structural proteome; v) deploy structure-guided analyses to identify consequential mutations; and, in combination with a genome-scale model that computes proteome allocation, vi) obtain a draft 3D visualization of the proteome in a functioning cell.

Physiological activation of human and mouse bitter taste receptors by bile acids.

Beside the oral cavity, bitter taste receptors are expressed in several non-gustatory tissues. Whether extra-oral bitter taste receptors function as sensors for endogenous agonists is unknown. To address this question, we devised functional experiments combined with molecular modeling approaches to investigate human and mouse receptors using a variety of bile acids as candidate agonists.

Bitter Odorants and Odorous Bitters: Toxicity and Human TAS2R Targets.

Flavor is perceived through the olfactory, taste, and trigeminal systems, mediated by designated GPCRs and channels. Signal integration occurs mainly in the brain, but some cross-reactivities occur at the receptor level. Here, we predict potential bitterness and taste receptors targets for thousands of odorants.

Ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD), and celiac disease are prevalent intestinal inflammatory disorders with nonsatisfactory therapeutic interventions. Analyzing patient data-driven cohorts can highlight disease pathways and new targets for interventions. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are attractive candidates, since they are readily targetable by RNA therapeutics, show relative cell-specific expression, and play key cellular functions.

Does being stricter mean doing better? Different effects of environmental policy stringency on quality of life, green innovation, and international cooperation.

Nowadays, when we are facing several strict regulations, the question arises - does higher strictness lead to the desired results? This study addresses the fact that less research attention has focused on the effects of environmental policy stringency (EPS) on perceived health expressing quality of life, and on green international cooperation. In addition, previous research has provided rather mixed results on the impact of EPS on green innovation. Therefore, we fill an interesting research gap and help better understand the relationship between market-based and non-market-based EPS, perceived health, green innovations, and green international cooperation in OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries.

Small nanofibrous disks for preconcentration of environmental contaminants followed by direct in-vial elution and chromatographic determination.

A novel method for the extraction of river water contaminants as model analytes of ranging polarities, including bisphenols A, C, S, Z, fenoxycarb, kadethrin, and deltamethrin, using small compact fibrous disks has been developed and validated. Polymer nanofibers and microfibers prepared from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), polypropylene, polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, poly(lactic acid), and polycaprolactone doped with graphene were evaluated in terms of extraction efficiency, selectivity, and stability in organic solutions. Our novel extraction procedure comprised preconcentration of analytes from 150 mL river water to 1 mL of eluent using a compact nanofibrous disk freely vortexed in the sample.

Coronary artery perforation successfully treated with a second drug-eluting stent.

A coronary artery perforation is a rare, but potentially lethal, complication of percutaneous coronary intervention. We present a case of massive main vessel coronary perforation of the right coronary artery in a patient with acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction, which was successfully treated with a second drug-eluting stent. This uncommon therapeutic approach was used to preserve flow to the large side branch.

High-Throughput Analysis of Underivatized Amino Acids and Acylcarnitines in Infant Serum: A Micromethod Based on Stable Isotope Dilution Targeted HILIC-ESI-MS/MS.

Amino acids and acylcarnitines are important biomarkers of the body's energy state and can be used as diagnostic markers of certain inborn errors of metabolism. Few multianalyte methods for high-throughput analysis in serum exist for these compounds, but micromethods suitable for use in young children and infants are lacking. Therefore, we developed a quantitative high-throughput multianalyte hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method preceded by a derivatization-free sample preparation using minimum amounts of serum (25 μL).

Toward High-Throughput Analysis of Aroma Compounds Using Ultrahigh-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry: Screening of Key Food Odorants in Various Foods.

Recent studies show the immense capacities of the unified quantitation of aroma and taste compounds using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The goal of this study was to highlight the broad application of this unified method. Thus, a stable isotope dilution analysis quantification method of the most important key food odorants in various food categories by LC-MS was developed.

Intestinal B cells license metabolic T-cell activation in NASH microbiota/antigen-independently and contribute to fibrosis by IgA-FcR signalling.

Background & Aims: The progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) to fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is aggravated by auto-aggressive T cells. The gut-liver axis contributes to NASH, but the mechanisms involved and the consequences for NASH-induced fibrosis and liver cancer remain unknown. We investigated the role of gastrointestinal B cells in the development of NASH, fibrosis and NASH-induced HCC.

Metabolic function-based normalization improves transcriptome data-driven reduction of genome-scale metabolic models.

Genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) are extensively used to simulate cell metabolism and predict cell phenotypes. GEMs can also be tailored to generate context-specific GEMs, using omics data integration approaches. To date, many integration approaches have been developed, however, each with specific pros and cons; and none of these algorithms systematically outperforms the others.

Deciphering molecular mechanisms stabilizing the reovirus-binding complex.

Mammalian orthoreoviruses (reoviruses) serve as potential triggers of celiac disease and have oncolytic properties, making these viruses potential cancer therapeutics. Primary attachment of reovirus to host cells is mainly mediated by the trimeric viral protein, σ1, which engages cell-surface glycans, followed by high-affinity binding to junctional adhesion molecule-A (JAM-A). This multistep process is thought to be accompanied by major conformational changes in σ1, but direct evidence is lacking.
