Study Objectives: This study examined the relationship between naps and cardiovascular disease (CVD) events or death in different age and sex groups.
Methods: A total of 3,069 participants stratified by age (< 65, 65-74, and ≥ 75 years old) and sex, underwent Cox regression analysis to assess nap's impact on CVD risk. Restricted cubic spline plots were used for dose-response relationships.

Introduction: Whether the hypertension burden is associated with stroke incidence is inconclusive. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between hypertension burden and stroke risk in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
Methods: HFpEF patients from the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist (TOPCAT) trial were divided into three groups (low, medium, and high risk) according to their hypertension burden values.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is closely related to low back pain, which is a prevalent age-related problem worldwide; however, the mechanism underlying IDD is unknown. Glutamine, a free amino acid prevalent in plasma, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in various diseases, and the current study aims to clarify the effect and mechanism of glutamine in IDD. A synergistic interplay was observed between pyroptosis and ferroptosis within degenerated human disc specimens.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is the cause of low back pain (LBP), and recent research has suggested that inflammatory cytokines play a significant role in this process. Maslinic acid (MA), a natural compound found in olive plants ( ), has anti-inflammatory properties, but its potential for treating IDD is unclear. The current study aims to investigate the effects of MA on TNFα-induced IDD and in other models.

Backgrounds: A deep neck space abscess (DNSA) is a critical condition resulting from infection of deep neck fascia and soft issue, leading to high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, intensive care can be very significant for patients with DNSA. This study aimed to develop models to predict the need for postoperative intensive care in patients with DNSA.

Regulating metabolic disorders has become a promising focus in treating intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). A few drugs regulating metabolism, such as atorvastatin, metformin, and melatonin, show positive effects in treating IDD. Glutamine participates in multiple metabolic processes, including glutaminolysis and glycolysis; however, its impact on IDD is unclear.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the role of FOXA1 in acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by radiotherapy in colorectal cancer. Although FOXA1 is known to be aberrantly expressed in malignant tumors, its contribution to AKI remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the involvement of FOXA1 in AKI induced by radiotherapy in colorectal cancer and its influence on the regulation of downstream target genes.

Hypertension, a prevalent cardiovascular ailment globally, can precipitate numerous complications, notably hypertensive cardiomyopathy. Meteorin-like (METRNL) is demonstrated to possess potential protective properties on cardiovascular diseases. However, its specific role and underlying mechanism in hypertensive myocardial hypertrophy remain elusive.

Background: In hospital management, pinpointing steps that most enhance operating room (OR) throughput is challenging. While prior literature has utilized discrete event simulation (DES) to study specific strategies such as scheduling and resource allocation, our study examines an earlier planning phase, assessing all workflow stages to determine the most impactful steps for subsequent strategy development.
Methods: DES models real-world systems by simulating sequential events.

Objectives: Hypothermia is highly common in patients undergoing gynecological surgeries under general anesthesia, so the length of hospitalization and even the risk of mortality are substantially increased. Our aim was to develop a simple and practical model to preoperatively identify gynecological surgery patients at risk of intraoperative hypothermia.
Methods: In this retrospective study, we collected data from 802 patients who underwent gynecological surgery at three medical centers from June 2022 to August 2023.

Background: Severe degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR) can cause a poor prognosis if left untreated. For patients considered at prohibitive surgical risk, transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) has become an accepted alternative therapy. The DragonFly transcatheter valve repair system is an innovative evolution of the mitral TEER device family to treat DMR.

Background: This study investigated whether gCTRP9 (globular C1q/tumor necrosis factor-related protein-9) could restore high-glucose (HG)-suppressed endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) functions by activating the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS).
Methods And Results: EPCs were treated with HG (25 mmol/L) and gCTRP9. Migration, adhesion, and tube formation assays were performed.

Background: ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) based on large-scale language models, has sparked interest in the field of health care. Nonetheless, the capabilities of AI in text comprehension and generation are constrained by the quality and volume of available training data for a specific language, and the performance of AI across different languages requires further investigation. While AI harbors substantial potential in medicine, it is imperative to tackle challenges such as the formulation of clinical care standards; facilitating cultural transitions in medical education and practice; and managing ethical issues including data privacy, consent, and bias.

Background: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a sub-population of cancer cells present in many kinds of malignant tumors that have the potential for self-proliferation and differentiation. These cells have been demonstrated as the main cause of tumor recurrence and metastasis. Strong evidence indicates that CSCs prefer reprogrammed fatty acid β-oxidation over oxidative phosphorylation for sustaining energy supply.

Thyroid ultrasound is a widely used diagnostic technique for thyroid nodules in clinical practice. However, due to the characteristics of ultrasonic imaging, such as low image contrast, high noise levels, and heterogeneous features, detecting and identifying nodules remains challenging. In addition, high-quality labeled medical imaging datasets are rare, and thyroid ultrasound images are no exception, posing a significant challenge for machine learning applications in medical image analysis.

Early spontaneous abortion (ESA) is a common adverse pregnancy outcome mainly attributed to embryo chromosomal abnormalities. However, as a quantitative marker, whether the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) can reflect oocyte quality is still controversial. By integrating biological evidence and adjusting many cofounders, this study aimed to clarify the controversies about the association between AMH and ESA caused by embryo aneuploidy during assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment.

Background: The growing demand for electrophysiology (EP) treatment in China presents a challenge for current EP care delivery systems. This study constructed a discrete event simulation (DES) model of an inpatient EP care delivery process, simulating a generalized inpatient journey of EP patients from admission to discharge in the cardiology department of a tertiary hospital in China. The model shows how many more patients the system can serve under different resource constraints by optimizing various phases of the care delivery process.
