Bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass has received increasing attention over the past decade. Many attempts have been made to reduce the cost of bioethanol production by combining the separate steps of the process into a single-step process known as consolidated bioprocessing. This requires identification of organisms that can efficiently decompose lignocellulose to simple sugars and ferment the pentose and hexose sugars liberated to ethanol.

Glaciation accompanied our human ancestors in Africa throughout the Pleistocene. Regrettably, equatorial glaciers and snow are disappearing rapidly, and we are likely the last generation who will get to know these peculiar places. Despite the permanently harsh conditions of glacier/snow habitats, they support a remarkable diversity of life ranging from bacteria to animals.

Blue mold is a postharvest rot of pomaceous fruits caused by and a number of other species The genome of the highly aggressive strain R19 was re-sequenced and analyzed together with the genome of the less aggressive strain RS1. Whole genome scale similarities and differences were examined. A phylogenetic analysis of and several closely related species revealed that the two pathogens isolated from decayed apple with blue mold symptoms are not each other's closest relatives.

An ever expanding body of research investigates the human microbiome in general and the skin microbiome in particular. Microbiomes vary greatly from individual to individual. Understanding the factors that account for this variation, however, has proven challenging, with many studies able to account statistically for just a small proportion of the inter-individual variation in the abundance, species richness or composition of bacteria.

For the surface reflectance of an object to be a useful cue to object identity, judgments of its color should remain stable across changes in the object's environment. In 2D scenes, there is general consensus that color judgments are much more stable across illumination changes than background changes. Here we investigate whether these findings generalize to real 3D objects.

Introduction: Research instruments can be used to assess the impact of lower urinary tract symptoms on health-related quality of life. Evaluating the reliability, validity, and sensitivity of two of these instruments provides evidence concerning their readiness for use in research and clinical settings.
Objective: The researchers evaluated psychometric properties of the Male Urogenital Distress Inventory and Male Urinary Symptom Impact Questionnaire in men suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms following radical prostatectomy.
