Vaughn is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL; St. Louis, MO). Her research interests include sociology of punishment, crime control policy, and race and inequality.

Group Violence Interventions (GVIs) combine a focused deterrence law enforcement approach with community mobilization and social services. The current study qualitatively examines Project Longevity, Connecticut's largest GVI initiative, to contribute to the limited literature on implementation of gun violence reduction strategies. Relying on interviews with 24 of Project Longevity law enforcement and non-law enforcement partners, we explore the establishment of interagency collaboration, which was viewed by study participants as the most pressing implementation challenge of Project Longevity.

Optic Disc Edema and Posterior Globe Flattening Secondary to Ocular Hypotony: Case Report and Discussion Regarding Pathophysiology and Clinical Findings.

J Neuroophthalmol

June 2021

Department of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology of the State University of Campinas (JAG, GCT, TKLS), Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil ; and Department of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology of State University of Campinas (FCM), Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil and University of São Paulo (FCM), São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

We describe a case of a young female patient presenting with ocular hypotension (4 mm Hg) secondary to cyclodialysis, and optic disc edema (ODE) after a blunt trauma in the right eye (right eye). MRI showed posterior globe flattening of the right eye, drawing our attention to the pathophysiology behind these findings. The combination of ODE and posterior globe flattening, as observed in the present case of ocular hypotony, is known from other conditions such as intracranial hypertension and space-flight neuro-ocular syndrome, pointing to a common pathophysiological mechanism, possibly resulting from axoplasmic stasis at the level of the lamina cribrosa due to a high translaminar pressure difference.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed the trends in liver donor management in Brazil, revealing that despite a high demand, 27% of liver donations were discarded from 2015 to 2018, indicating significant organ waste.
  • Most discarded donors were male and predominantly Caucasian, with a median body mass index of 26.27 kg/m; however, many had abnormal liver function tests which contributed to the decision to discard.
  • The study concluded that subjective assessments of graft quality and misinterpretation of donor health data result in excessive organ refusal, highlighting the potential for increased usage of extended criteria donors.

June 2020

Vaccine Development Laboratory, Department of Microbiology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of São Paulo, Av. Prof. Lineu Prestes, 1374, Cidade Universitária, São Paulo, SP, 05508-900, Brazil.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) represents one of the most important etiological agents of diarrhea in developing countries and characteristically produces at least one of two enterotoxins: heat-labile toxin (LT) and heat-stable toxin (ST). It has been previously shown that the production and release of LT by human-derived ETEC strains are variable. Although the natural genetic polymorphisms of regulatory sequences of LT-encoding (eltAB) genes may explain the variable production of LT, the knowledge of the transcriptional and posttranscriptional aspects affecting LT expression among ETEC strains is not clear.

The main subject of the current study is to look into the limitations found in individuals diagnosed with cancer, considered a public health problem, especially in developing countries where the impact of this disease is expected to account for 80% of 20 million new cases estimated worldwide by 2025. For some patients undergoing treatment, continuing to be professionally active is challenging especially considering that work fosters a purpose in life, a sense of contribution, distraction, and self-esteem, which aids in physical, cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal recovery. Within this context, the aim is to describe the limitations found in individuals with cancer, who have maintained their work activities in private service during radiotherapy treatment, through a descriptive study and a quantitative approach.

Periungual and paronychia-like skin lesions can mimic various diseases, setting up a diagnostic challenge that invariably requires correlation with complementary tests. We report a case of an ulcerated tumor of the nailfold diagnosed as leishmaniasis. Although paronychia-like cutaneous leishmaniasis is a rare variant, its epidemiological relevance in Brazil should prompt dermatologists to include it as a plausible diagnosis thus leading to correct work up and treatment.

Background: The preservation and functionality of a limb affected by a malformation (such as congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia) or a severely mangled lower limb in children, despite modern reconstructive techniques, remains challenging, often eventually requiring amputation to achieve a better outcome. The classical Syme and Boyd procedures are functionally better than transtibial (TT) amputation, but are not feasible for congenital tibial pseudoarthrosis. TT amputation delivers an excellent, effective, and functional stump that usually leads, after prosthetization, to a functional gait.
