The concentrations of ten elements (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Hg, Cu, Mn, and Cd) and fatty acids were analyzed in muscles of the European eel ( Linnaeus, 1758). The eels were caught in freshwater lakes connected with the Sawica River (north-eastern Poland). On this basis, it was determined whether the consumption of the fish is beneficial and safe for the health of the consumer.

The aim of the study was to compare the chemical and fatty acid composition, colour, and sensory quality of wild and farmed pikeperch. Raw wild pikeperch had a higher moisture and ash contents, as well as pH value, but lower fat and protein contents than farmed pikeperch. In sous-vide fillets, a higher fat and a lower protein content were noted in farmed fish.

Each newly-created pond which is supplied with mine water gives the opportunity to study a unique ecosystem in context of possible conditions for biotic live. Therefore, this research aimed to assess a phytoplankton-based ecological potential against the trophic conditions and the risk of contamination with trace elements, and demonstrate the possibility to stabilize at least good water quality of a clarification pond. The gradual decrease in turbidity-related variables (including suspended solids and iron) and nutrients, on the one hand, and an increase in phytoplankton-related indicators, on the other hand, were the most evident.

This is the first report of reproduction of a gynogenetic female Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) and subsequent production of viable offspring with differentiated gonads. Carp from breeding strains with different genetic background present diverse levels of resistance to viral pathogens. Inland fishery belongs to those branches of animal production that use very large amounts of chemotherapeutics, in particular antibiotics. The accumulation of chemotherapeutic agents in bottom sediments is a direct threat to the aquatic environment and directly affects the condition and health of the fish. Finding a preparation that could be used both prophylactically to increase the resistance of fish and therapeutically in case of infection with pathogenic bacteria, without side effects for fish and aquatic environment could be a great solution to this problem.

Outbreaks of koi sleepy disease (KSD) caused by carp edema virus (CEV) may seriously affect populations of farmed common carp, one of the most important fish species for global food production. The present study shows further evidence for the involvement of CEV in outbreaks of KSD among carp and koi populations: in a series of infection experiments, CEV from two different genogroups could be transmitted to several strains of naïve common carp via cohabitation with fish infected with CEV. In recipient fish, clinical signs of KSD were induced.
