The concentrations of ten elements (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Hg, Cu, Mn, and Cd) and fatty acids were analyzed in muscles of the European eel ( Linnaeus, 1758). The eels were caught in freshwater lakes connected with the Sawica River (north-eastern Poland). On this basis, it was determined whether the consumption of the fish is beneficial and safe for the health of the consumer.

The management of genetic resources deposited in gene banks requires knowledge of the genetic profiles of the gamete donors and bioinformatics tools to process this information. In this work, we show how to use Genassemblage 2.2 software in managing the genetic variation deposited in a bank of cryopreserved semen.

The aim of the study was to compare the chemical and fatty acid composition, colour, and sensory quality of wild and farmed pikeperch. Raw wild pikeperch had a higher moisture and ash contents, as well as pH value, but lower fat and protein contents than farmed pikeperch. In sous-vide fillets, a higher fat and a lower protein content were noted in farmed fish.

Total Mercury and Fatty Acids in Selected Fish Species on the Polish Market: A Risk to Human Health.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

August 2022

Department of Limnology and Fishery, Institute of Animal Breeding, Faculty of Biology and Animal Science, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, 51-630 Wrocław, Poland.

The muscles of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush Walbaum, 1792), crucian carp (Carassius carassius Linnaeus, 1758), flounder (Platichthys flesus Linnaeus, 1758), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758), mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) and tench (Tinca tinca Linnaeus, 1758) were examined. The total mercury (THg) was processed using the Milestone DMA-80 and the fatty acids were analyzed using the 7890A Agilent Technologies chromatograph. The THg content in analyzed fish ranged from 0.

Assessment of Fish Quality Based on the Content of Heavy Metals.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

February 2022

Department of Ichthyology, Hydrobiology and Ecology of Waters, The Stanisław Sakowicz Inland Fisheries Institute in Olsztyn, 10-719 Olsztyn, Poland.

The aim of this study was to estimate the fish quality in terms of the Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn contents. The research material was the muscle tissue of the fish crucian carp ( Linnaeus, 1758), flounder ( Linnaeus, 1758), Gilthead seabream ( Linnaeus, 1758), mackerel ( Linnaeus, 1758), Blue grenadier ( Hector, 1871), rainbow trout ( Walbaum, 1792), tench ( Linnaeus, 1758), tilapia ( Linnaeus, 1758), Walleye pollock ( Pallas, 1814) and perch ( Linnaeus, 1758.).

Each newly-created pond which is supplied with mine water gives the opportunity to study a unique ecosystem in context of possible conditions for biotic live. Therefore, this research aimed to assess a phytoplankton-based ecological potential against the trophic conditions and the risk of contamination with trace elements, and demonstrate the possibility to stabilize at least good water quality of a clarification pond. The gradual decrease in turbidity-related variables (including suspended solids and iron) and nutrients, on the one hand, and an increase in phytoplankton-related indicators, on the other hand, were the most evident.

This is the first report of reproduction of a gynogenetic female Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) and subsequent production of viable offspring with differentiated gonads. Gonads were sampled twice from 30 randomly selected individuals. Gonadal fragments were examined histologically to identify the sex ratio and the sexual maturation stage.

Carp from breeding strains with different genetic background present diverse levels of resistance to viral pathogens. Carp strains of Asian origin, currently being treated as Cyprinus rubrofuscus L., especially Amur wild carp (AS), were proven to be more resistant to koi herpesvirus disease (KHVD; caused by cyprinid herpesvirus 3, CyHV-3) than strains originating from Europe and belonging to Cyprinus carpio L.

Inland fishery belongs to those branches of animal production that use very large amounts of chemotherapeutics, in particular antibiotics. The accumulation of chemotherapeutic agents in bottom sediments is a direct threat to the aquatic environment and directly affects the condition and health of the fish. Finding a preparation that could be used both prophylactically to increase the resistance of fish and therapeutically in case of infection with pathogenic bacteria, without side effects for fish and aquatic environment could be a great solution to this problem.

Outbreaks of koi sleepy disease (KSD) caused by carp edema virus (CEV) may seriously affect populations of farmed common carp, one of the most important fish species for global food production. The present study shows further evidence for the involvement of CEV in outbreaks of KSD among carp and koi populations: in a series of infection experiments, CEV from two different genogroups could be transmitted to several strains of naïve common carp via cohabitation with fish infected with CEV. In recipient fish, clinical signs of KSD were induced.

Preservation in 30% ethanol and freezing to a temperature of -20 ± 2° C is an appropriate method for measurement of fish eggs, larvae and juveniles. Egg diameter of the common carp Cyprinus carpio increased insignificantly by 1·32% after preservation compared with live size. The total length (LT ) of 1 day post-hatching (dph) larvae as well as the standard length (LS) of 16 dph larvae of C.

In a 40 day experiment, barbel Barbus barbus juveniles were fed a dry diet continuously, or food was withheld for 2, 5 or 10 days, and then resumed feeding. Improved feed utilization efficiency allowed fish deprived of food for 2 or 5 days to fully compensate for body mass loss. Short-term food deprivation as a method of preventing negative effects of overfeeding in intensive rearing of juvenile B.
