Adiponectin, one of the most ubiquitous adipokines found in the blood, plays a major role in glucolipid metabolism and energy metabolism and regulation. In recent years, a growing body of research indicates that adiponectin also plays a significant role in diabetic retinopathy. In the present review, we specifically address the protective effects of adiponectin on the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy through improvement in insulin resistance, alleviation of oxidative stress, limiting of inflammation, and prevention of vascular remodeling, with the aim to explore new potential approaches and targets for the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.

Anti-PD-L1 therapy exhibits durable efficacy, but only in a small fraction of cancer patients. The immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) is a crucial obstacle that impedes cancer immunotherapy. Here, we found that anti-PD-L1 therapy coupled with CD4 T cell depletion induced colorectal tumor regression and vascular normalization, while monotherapy only retarded tumor growth without affecting the tumor vasculature.

Background And Aims: Remnant cholesterol (RC) adversely contributes to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and overall survival in various diseases. However, its role in CVD outcomes and all-cause mortality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) is limited. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between RC and all-cause and CVD mortality in patients undergoing PD.

Background: Serum protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) is a promising biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance.
Aim: To identify the contributing factors related to the abnormal elevation of PIVKA-II level and assess their potential influence on the performance of PIVKA-II in detecting HCC.
Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled in 784 chronic liver disease (CLD) patients and 267 HCC patients in Mengchao Hepatobiliary Hospital of Fujian Medical University from April 2016 to December 2019.

Collectin subfamily member 10 (COLEC10), a C-type lectin mainly expressed in the liver, is involved in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its underlying molecular mechanism in HCC progression remains unknown. In this study, reduced COLEC10 expression in tumor tissues was validated using various HCC cohorts and was associated with poor patient prognosis.

Background: Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) with fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX), lenvatinib and programmed death receptor-1 signaling inhibitors (PD1s) all alone have been proven effective in treating advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), yet the efficacy and safety of the tri-combination therapy in treating HCC patients with portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) remains unknown.
Methods: In this retrospective study, HCC patients with PVTT received either induction therapy of HAIC and lenvatinib plus PD1s in the initial period of treatment and then dual maintenance therapy of lenvatinib and PD1s (HAIC-Len-PD1) or continuous lenvatinib combined with PD1s (Len-PD1).
Results: In total, 53 and 89 patients were enrolled into the Len-PD1 group and HAIC-Len-PD1 group, respectively.

Objective: T cell immunoglobulin and mucin-containing protein-3 (TIM-3) is an important immune checkpoint, but its role in lung cancer is still not clear. In this study, we investigated TIM-3 protein expression and its correlation with TNF- and IFN- by examining the tissues of patients with lung adenocarcinoma.
Methods: We detected the mRNA quantity of TIM-3, TNF-, and IFN- in 40 surgically resected specimens from patients with lung adenocarcinoma by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative hs-cTnI and long-term mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in colorectal cancer patients.
Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort study included 1105 consecutive colorectal cancer patients who received tumor resection surgery between January 2018 and June 2020. Inclusion criteria were an age ≥ 18 years and had been tested for hs-cTnI on admission within 7 days prior to tumor resection surgery.

Background: Early detection of cancer offers the opportunity to identify candidates when curative treatments are achievable. The THUNDER study (THe UNintrusive Detection of EaRly-stage cancers, NCT04820868) aimed to evaluate the performance of enhanced linear-splinter amplification sequencing, a previously described cell-free DNA (cfDNA) methylation-based technology, in the early detection and localization of six types of cancers in the colorectum, esophagus, liver, lung, ovary, and pancreas.
Patients And Methods: A customized panel of 161 984 CpG sites was constructed and validated by public and in-house (cancer: n = 249; non-cancer: n = 288) methylome data, respectively.

Background: Growth arrest-specific 5 (GAS5) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that regulates cell viability. GAS5 lncRNA has been shown to decrease colorectal and breast cancer carcinogenesis. Although the function and mechanisms related to lncRNA GAS5 in the development of ovarian cancer (OC) remains unclear.

Background: Current prognostic prediction models of colorectal cancer (CRC) include only the preoperative measurement of tumor markers, with their available repeated postoperative measurements underutilized. CRC prognostic prediction models were constructed in this study to clarify whether and to what extent the inclusion of perioperative longitudinal measurements of CEA, CA19-9, and CA125 can improve the model performance, and perform a dynamic prediction.
Methods: The training and validating cohort included 1453 and 444 CRC patients who underwent curative resection, with preoperative measurement and two or more measurements within 12 months after surgery, respectively.

Background: Surgery is the cornerstone of colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment, yet complete removal of the tumour remains a challenge. The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) fluorescent molecular imaging is a novel technique, which has broad application prospects in tumour surgical navigation. We aimed to evaluate the ability of CEACAM5-targeted probe for CRC recognition and the value of NIR-II imaging-guided CRC resection.

Introduction: In recent decades, single-cell sequencing technology has developed rapidly and used widely in various fields of life sciences, especially for the detection of immune cells. A bibliometric analysis of single-cell sequencing research work on immune cells published during the 2011-2021 period should provide new insight on the use of single-cell sequencing.
Methods: We screened 1,460 publications on single-cell sequencing on immune cells according to the publication date, article type, language, and country.

Background: Bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) is associated with high mortality and recurrence. Although mRNA-based vaccines are promising treatment strategies for combating multiple solid cancers, their efficacy against BLCA remains unclear. We aimed to identify potential effective antigens of BLCA for the development of mRNA-based vaccines and screen for immune clusters to select appropriate candidates for vaccination.

Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is characterized by the failure of sperm production due to testicular disorders and represents the most severe form of male infertility. Growing evidences have indicated that gene defects could be the potential cause of NOA via genome-wide sequencing approaches. Here, bi-allelic deleterious variants in meiosis inhibitor protein 1 (MEI1) were identified by whole-exome sequencing in four Chinese patients with NOA.

Experimental studies have shown that exercise and human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) play positive roles in spinal cord injury (SCI). However, whether ADSCs and/or exercise have a positive effect on SCI-induced neuropathic pain is still unclear. Thus, there is a need to explore the effects of exercise combined with administration of ADSCs on neuropathic pain after SCI.
