Article Synopsis
  • Histopathological images of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) contain valuable information that can help predict patient outcomes, but there hasn't been a deep learning framework focused on this area until now.
  • The study developed a deep learning system that automates the classification and quantification of important spatial features in H&E-stained images of CRLM, showing robust prognostic value beyond current clinical risk scores.
  • This automated framework could reduce the subjectivity and workload for pathologists, providing a cost-effective tool to improve clinical decision-making for CRLM patients.

Baseline gut microbiome features prior to SARS-CoV-2 infection are associated with host symptoms in and post COVID-19.

J Med Virol

September 2023

Key Laboratory of Human Microbiome and Chronic Diseases, Ministry of Education, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

The human gut microbiome varies substantially across individuals and populations and differentially tames our immunity at steady-state. Hence, we hypothesize that the large heterogeneity of gut microbiomes at steady-state may shape our baseline immunity differentially, and then mediate discrepant immune responses and symptoms when one encounters a viral infection, such as SARS-CoV-2 infection. To validate this hypothesis, we conducted an exploratory, longitudinal microbiome-COVID-19 study involving homogenous young participants from two geographically different regions in China.

Myocardial injury before noncardiac surgery.

Front Cardiovasc Med

August 2023

Internal Medicine-Cardiovascular Department, Jiujiang First People's Hospital, JiuJiang, China.

Non-cardiac surgical procedures present a significant circulatory stress and can potentially trigger cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction and heart failure. Myocardial injury before non-cardiac surgery is associated with an increased risk of mortality and major cardiovascular complications during perioperative period, as well as up to 5 years after non-cardiac surgery. While the definition of preoperative myocardial injury is not yet clear, it is generally understood as myocardial injury resulting from various causes of troponin elevation without acute coronary syndrome prior to surgery.

Background: Accumulating research substantiated that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) have a significant impact on the tumorigenesis, progression, and distant metastasis, representing a novel target for various cancers. However, the underlying dynamic changes and interactions between TAMs and tumor cells remain largely elusive in colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: We depicted the dynamic changes of macrophages using sing-cell RNA-seq data and extracted TAM differentiation-related genes.

Electronic address:

Purpose: Adjuvant therapy is recommended to minimize the risk of distant metastasis (DM) and local recurrence (LR) in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). However, its role is controversial. We aimed to develop a pretreatment MRI-based deep learning model to predict LR, DM, and overall survival (OS) over 5 years after surgery and to identify patients benefitting from adjuvant chemotherapy (AC).

Background: The goal of the assisted reproductive treatment is to transfer one euploid blastocyst and to help infertile women giving birth one healthy neonate. Some algorithms have been used to assess the ploidy status of embryos derived from couples with normal chromosome, who subjected to preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) treatment. However, it is currently unknown whether artificial intelligence model can be used to assess the euploidy status of blastocyst derived from populations with chromosomal rearrangement.

Microbial signatures show remarkable potentials in predicting colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic powers of multimodal microbial signatures, multi-kingdom species, genes, and single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) for detecting precancerous adenomas. We performed cross-cohort analyses on whole metagenome sequencing data of 750 samples via xMarkerFinder to identify adenoma-associated microbial multimodal signatures.

Background: Challenging arterial anatomy may prevent timely endovascular treatment (EVT) of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) through a transfemoral approach prompting the use of alternative access routes. We determined the crossover rate from femoral to radial access during EVT of AIS due to large vessel occlusion and identified its radiological predictors and clinical outcomes.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective review of all AIS patients who underwent EVT at a single institution from January 2016 to March 2021 was performed.

Although VEGF-B was discovered as a VEGF-A homolog a long time ago, the angiogenic effect of VEGF-B remains poorly understood with limited and diverse findings from different groups. Notwithstanding, drugs that inhibit VEGF-B together with other VEGF family members are being used to treat patients with various neovascular diseases. It is therefore critical to have a better understanding of the angiogenic effect of VEGF-B and the underlying mechanisms.

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangdong, China.

Introduction: Asthma is a chronic disease that affects populations worldwide. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of TCN1 in sputum and its correlation with inflammation and lung function in asthma.

Methods: We recruited 141 subjects, detected TCN1 mRNA level by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, detected TCN1 protein expression by Western blot, detected TCN1 protein level by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and analyzed the correlation between TCN1 and fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), IgE, EOS%, lung functions, and some Th2 cytokines.

Background: It is common for elderly patients to be underrepresented in clinical trials for cancer, which can result in a lack of efficacy data and unclear criteria to guide treatment decisions for clinical doctors. Therefore, one of the common challenges in oncology treatment is determining the extent to which patients aged 75 and older have benefited from postoperative chemotherapy.

Purpose: The study aimed to explore the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) on 3-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) after curative resection in patients aged 75 years and older with stage II-III colorectal cancer (CRC).
