Objective: To investigate the role of RNA-binding motif protein X-linked (RBMX) in regulating the proliferation, migration, invasion and glycolysis in human bladder cancer cells.

Methods: A lentivirus vectors system and RNA interference technique were used to construct bladder cancer 1376 and UC-3 cell models with RBMX overexpression and knockdown, respectively, and successful cell modeling was verified using RT-qPCR and Western blotting. Proliferation and colony forming ability of the cells were evaluated using EdU assay and colony-forming assay, and cell migration and invasion abilities were determined using Transwell experiment.

Malignant brain tumors are highly heterogeneous tumors with a poor prognosis and a high morbidity and mortality rate in both children and adults. The cancer stem cell (CSC, also named tumor-initiating cell) model states that tumor growth is driven by a subset of CSCs. This model explains some of the clinical observations of brain tumors, including the almost unavoidable tumor recurrence after initial successful chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and treatment resistance.

Int J Cardiol

September 2023

Division of Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Center, Washington University in St Louis, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St Louis, MO, United States of America. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics and outcomes of Chinese patients diagnosed with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) by creating the ChiTTS Registry and analyzing data from 112 patients.
  • The research found that a significant percentage of patients experienced complications during hospitalization, with predictors like physical triggers, dyspnea, and younger age (<70 years) linked to these adverse outcomes.
  • Additionally, patients who had complications during their hospital stay faced a higher risk of long-term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACCE) and all-cause mortality, whereas beta-blockers at discharge were associated with reduced long-term MACCE.

Background: More and more evidence showed that circRNA/miRNA/mRNA axis played a vital role in the pathogenesis of some diseases. However, the role of circRNA/miRNA/mRNA axis in partial bladder outlet obstruction (pBOO) remains unknown. Our study aimed to explore the complex regulatory mechanism of circRNA/miRNA/mRNA axis in pBOO.

Gene Expression Trajectories from Normal Nonsmokers to COPD Smokers and Disease Progression Discriminant Modeling in Response to Cigarette Smoking.

Dis Markers

September 2022

State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Vascular Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Background: Cigarette smoking (CS) is considered to the predominant risk factor contributing to the etiopathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); meanwhile, genetic predisposition likely plays a role in determining disease susceptibility.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate gene expression trajectories from normal nonsmokers to COPD smokers and disease progression discriminant modeling in response to cigarette smoking.

Methods: Small airway epithelial samples of human with different smoking status using fiberoptic bronchoscopy and corresponding rat lung tissues following 0, 3, and 6 months of CS exposure were obtained.

Background: Kidney stones are composed of approximately 70-80% calcium oxalate. However, the exact mechanism of formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the roles of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the NF-κB signalling pathway in the pathogenesis of oxalate-induced renal tubular epithelial cell injury and its possible molecular mechanisms.

Amphotericin B (AMB) is an antifungal drug used for serious fungal infections. However, AMB has adverse reactions such as nephrotoxicity, which limit the clinical application of AMB alone or in combination with other antifungal drugs. Nano or micro drug delivery systems (DDS) have been proven to be effective in reducing the toxic and side effects of drugs.

Both lncRNAs and the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification are key regulators of tumorigenesis and innate immunity. However, little is known about the m6A modification of lncRNAs and their clinical and immune relevance in bladder cancer. In this study, we identified m6A-related lncRNAs using Pearson correlation analysis in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the IMvigor210 datasets.

Objectives: Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) has been reported to have a superior validity over PCR with amplification-refractory mutation system (ARMS-PCR) for detecting the BRAF V600E mutation in thyroid nodule fine-needle aspiration (FNA) samples using cytological diagnosis as the reference. However, the added value of ddPCR on surgical decision-making remains to be illustrated when the technique is combined with FNA cytology.

Methods: A total of 277 consecutive patients with thyroid nodules were subjected to FNA cytology and BRAF V600E testing with ARMS-PCR.

Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are characterized by a high degree of phenotypic plasticity. Contractile differentiation is governed by myocardin-related transcription factors (MRTFs), in particular myocardin (MYOCD), and when their drive is lost, the cells become proliferative and synthetic with an expanded endoplasmic reticulum (ER). ER is responsible for assembly and folding of secreted proteins.

Myocardin (MYOCD) is a critical regulator of smooth muscle cell (SMC) differentiation, but its transcriptional targets remain to be exhaustively characterized, especially at the protein level. Here we leveraged human RNA and protein expression data to identify novel potential MYOCD targets. Using correlation analyses we found several targets that we could confirm at the protein level, including SORBS1, SLMAP, SYNM, and MCAM.

Nexilin, encoded by the NEXN gene, is expressed in striated muscle and localizes to Z-discs, influencing mechanical stability. We examined Nexilin/NEXN in smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and addressed if Nexilin localizes to dense bodies and dense bands and whether it is regulated by actin-controlled coactivators from the MRTF (MYOCD, MKL1, MKL2) and YAP/TAZ (YAP1 and WWTR1) families. NEXN expression in SMCs was comparable to that in striated muscles.

This study investigated the effect of sevoflurane postconditioning on post-ischaemic cardiac function, infarct size, myocardial mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel (mitoKATP) function and apoptosis in ageing rats to determine the possible mechanism underlying the cardioprotective property of sevoflurane. Ageing rat hearts were isolated and attached to a Langendorff apparatus. The hearts were then exposed or not to sevoflurane postconditioning in the presence or absence of 100 μmol/L 5-hydroxydecanoate (5-HD), a selective mitoKATP inhibitor.
