Background: We investigated the association of alcohol consumption with cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality in elderly Chinese men.
Methods: Our participants were recruited from residents living in a suburban town of Shanghai (≥60 years of age, n = 1702). Alcohol intake was classified as non-drinkers, past drinkers (stopped drinking for ≥12 months), and current light-to-moderate (1 to 299 g/week) and heavy drinkers (≥300 g/week).

Purpose: We investigated serum uric acid changes in relation to the achieved clinic and ambulatory blood pressure after 8 weeks of antihypertensive therapy with two dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers.
Materials And Methods: The study participants were patients with clinic and ambulatory hypertension, enrolled in a randomised controlled trial that compared amlodipine (5-10 mg, = 215) and nifedipine gastrointestinal therapeutic system (GITS, 30-60 mg, = 203). Hyperuricaemia was defined as a serum uric acid concentration of ≥420 µmol/L in men and ≥360 µmol/L in women.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a risk factor of several cardiovascular diseases. We investigated the association between aortic root diameter and hypoxia-related parameters in hypertensive patients with OSA.
Methods: Our study included 242 hypertensive patients with OSA (52 mild, 71 moderate, and 119 severe).

We investigated the myocardial work derived from left ventricular pressure-strain loop in patients with primary aldosteronism or primary hypertension. We enrolled 50 patients with primary aldosteronism, 50 age- and sex-matched patients with primary hypertension, and 25 normotensive control subjects. We performed transthoracic echocardiography and speckle-tracking echocardiography-based left ventricular pressure-strain loop analysis to evaluate cardiac structure and function.

Objective: We investigated serum uric acid changes and incident hyperuricemia in relation to the achieved blood pressure (BP) after 12 weeks of antihypertensive therapy with the irbesartan/hydrochlorothiazide combination.
Methods: The study participants were 449 patients who completed the study. Analysis of covariance and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to calculate the least square mean changes (± standard error) from baseline in serum uric acid and odds ratios (ORs) for incident hyperuricemia according to the achieved levels of BP.

Dyslipidemia is an emerging disease in China, especially in the presence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. We investigated the association of dyslipidemia with the use of antihypertensive and antidiabetic agents. The study participants (n = 2423) were hypertensive and diabetic patients enrolled in a China nationwide registry.

Purpose: We investigated continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) adherence and its association with the blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate changes in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and hypertension.
Materials And Methods: In a single-blind trial, patients were randomly assigned to CPAP or sham CPAP treatment for 3 months. We performed clinic, ambulatory and home BP measurements at baseline and during follow-up.

Objective: In a substudy of a randomized controlled trial, we investigated the effects of the valsartan/amlodipine single-pill combination and nifedipine gastrointestinal therapeutic system (GITS) monotherapy on brachial pulse pressure (bPP) and radial augmentation index (rAI) in patients with previously uncontrolled hypertension.
Methods: We performed measurements of clinic blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate and rAI (n = 63) and ambulatory BP monitoring (n = 42) at baseline and 12-week of follow-up. Analysis of covariance was performed to calculate the least square mean change from baseline and between-group differences [95% confidence interval (CI)].

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a risk of hypertension and is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence. In Asian countries, the prevalence of OSA is high, as in Western countries. When blood pressure (BP) is evaluated in OSA individuals using ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM), the BP phenotype often indicates abnormal BP variability, such as increased nighttime BP or abnormal diurnal BP variation, that is, non-dipper pattern, riser pattern, and morning BP surge, and all these conditions have been associated with increased CVD events.

Increased heart rate is a predictor of cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and all-cause mortality. In those with high heart rates, interventions for heart rate reduction have been associated with reductions in coronary events. Asia is a diverse continent, and the prevalences of hypertension and cardiovascular disease differ among its countries.

Guidelines on the management of hypertension have been developed by various professional bodies and institutions to primarily address the issues of diagnosis, treatment, and control in order to rationalize and improve the management of hypertension. Hypertension guidelines across the world have recently been updated following the new and controversial lower blood pressure threshold of ≥130/80 mmHg for the diagnosis of hypertension adopted by the Americans. While there are differences between the major as well as between the Asian national guidelines, there were also many similarities.

Asian countries are facing an increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), which may aggravate the burden of cardiovascular diseases in this region. MetS is closely associated with ambulatory blood pressure (BP). Patients with MetS, compared to those without, had a twofold higher risk of new-onset office, home, or ambulatory hypertension.

Purpose: We investigated associations of blood pressure (BP) with albuminuria and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in young, middle and older aged patients with hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus.
Materials & Methods: Study participants were treated patients with hypertension or diabetes, enrolled in a China nationwide registry. The 2510 patients were classified into young (<45 years, = 345), middle (45-64 years, = 1383) and older (≥65 years, = 782) age groups.

Nocturnal home blood pressure (BP) monitoring has been used in clinical practice for ~20 years. The authors recently showed that nocturnal systolic BP (SBP) measured by a home BP monitoring (HBPM) device in a Japanese general practice population was a significant predictor of incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, independent of office and morning home SBP levels, and that masked nocturnal hypertension obtained by HBPM (defined as nocturnal home BP ≥ 120/70 mmHg and average morning and evening BP < 135/85 mmHg) was associated with an increased risk of CVD events compared with controlled BP (nocturnal home BP < 120/70 mmHg and average morning and evening BP < 135/85 mmHg). This evidence revealed that (a) it is feasible to use a nocturnal HBPM device for monitoring nocturnal BP levels, and (b) such a device may offer an alternative to ambulatory BP monitoring, which has been the gold standard for the measurement of nocturnal BP.

The aim of this study was to explore the long-term clinical results of Renal denervation (RDN) from the adventitia of the renal artery plus unilateral laparoscopic adrenalectomy to treat patients with resistant hypertension caused by unilateral aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA). Sixty patients with resistant hypertension caused by APA who were treated at Henan Provincial People's Hospital from December 2016 to March 2018 were selected and randomly assigned to undergo RDN from the adventitia of the renal artery plus adrenalectomy (RDN group, n = 30) or adrenalectomy alone (control group, n = 30). Office blood pressure (BP), antihypertensive medication usage and other laboratory characteristics were followed every 6 months through 36 months.

The prevalence of hypertension is increasing along with an aging population, causing millions of premature deaths annually worldwide. Low awareness of blood pressure (BP) elevation and suboptimal hypertension diagnosis serve as the major hurdles in effective hypertension management. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI), however, sheds the light of new strategies for hypertension management, such as remote supports from telemedicine and big data-derived prediction.

The prevalence of hypertension is high and still increasing in almost all communities regardless of high, middle, or low income. The control rate remains low in most countries. Telemedicine offers possibilities to improve blood pressure control.
