Multiple DNA repair pathways may be involved in the removal of the same DNA lesion caused by endogenous or exogenous agents. Although distinct DNA repair machinery fulfill overlapping roles in the repair of DNA lesions, the mechanisms coordinating different pathways have not been investigated in detail. Here, we show that Ku70, a core protein of nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) repair pathway, can directly interact with DNA polymerase-β (Pol-β), a central player in the DNA base excision repair (BER), and this physical complex not only promotes the polymerase activity of Pol-β and BER efficiency but also enhances the classic NHEJ repair.

In recent decades, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated that numerous microRNAs (miRNAs) are dysregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); these aberrantly expressed miRNAs are contributing regulators of HCC formation and progression. Thus, revealing the biological roles of miRNAs in HCC may provide novel information on the identification of effective therapeutic targets and valuable diagnosis methods. Herein, reverse transcription‑quantitative PCR was performed to determine the expression profile of miRNA‑584 (miR‑584) in HCC tissues and cell lines.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been found to play important regulatory roles in certain neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of miRNA‑153 (miR‑153) on the neural differentiation of HT‑22 cells. Overexpression of miR‑153 induced the differentiation of HT‑22 cells, increasing the number of protrusions and branches, reducing the S phase distribution of the cell cycle, and attenuating the cell proliferation rate as determined using the Cell Counting Kit‑8 assay.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. MiR-371 has recently emerged as an important regulator in tumorigenesis, and may serve as a biomarker for malignant tumors. We transfected miR-371 or its inhibitor in two human HCC cell lines, then used 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, soft agar colony formation, and transwell migration assays to evaluate the effects on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.

Objectives: Liuzijue Qigong (LQG), a kind of traditional Chinese health exercise (TCHE), is not only widely used to strengthen physical fitness and maintain psychological well-being in the elderly but has also been utilized to help improve respiratory function. As respiratory support is an important driving force for speech production, it is logical to postulate that the LQG training method with 6 monosyllabic speech sounds, xū, hē, hū, sī, chuī, and xī, can help individuals (1) experience a relaxing and natural state of speech production, (2) eliminate voice symptoms, and (3) improve their overall body function and mood. In the current study, we hypothesized that the LQG method with these 6 sounds can be effective in improving vocal function in subjects with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) in comparison with a conventional voice therapy method.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-protein-coding transcripts that play important roles in tumorigenesis and tumor progression. Our study aimed to explore the role of lncRNA MAGI2-AS3 in breast cancer metastatic progression. In the present study, our results showed that MAGI2-AS3 can inhibit the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells.

Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been acknowledged as important regulators of hepatocarcinogenesis and tumor progression. Therefore, identifying the underlying molecular mechanisms of miRNAs in the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may be important for understanding the pathogenesis of HCC and aid the identification of potential therapeutic strategies. In the present study, miRNA (miR)‑601 was significantly downregulated in HCC tissues and cell lines; low miR‑601 expression was strongly associated with tumor, node and metastasis staging and lymph node metastasis of patients with HCC.

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) represents the most aggressive subtype of thyroid cancer and has a poor prognosis. In addition to surgery, chemotherapy is an important treatment for ATC; however, the therapeutic effects of current chemotherapies for ATC are not particularly promising. There is a high proportion of side population (SP) cells in ATC, which may be a reason for its drug resistance.
