Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine playing a pivotal role during inflammation and immune responses. In the recent years, the function of IL-6 in the tumor microenvironment (TME) for affecting tumorigenesis and immunotherapy response has been investigated. The genetic mutations are mainly responsible for the development of cancer, while interactions in TME are also important, involving both cancers and non-cancerous cells.

The association of telomere length and coronary heart disease: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, College of Public Health, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, Henan, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Aims: The association of telomere length (TL) and coronary heart disease (CHD) is still debated, and there is a lack of dose-response meta-analyses on this issue. The aim is therefore to integrate existing evidence on the association between TL and CHD risk and explore the dose-response relationship between them.

Data Synthesis: PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched for relevant studies up to September 2024.

Lysosome-targeted dual-locked NIR fluorescent probe for visualization of HS and viscosity in drug-induced liver injury and tumor models.

Anal Chim Acta

February 2025

Department of Radiology, Changhai Hospital, Naval Medical University, Changhai Road 168, Shanghai 200433, China. Electronic address:

Background: Lysosomes, as an indispensable subcellular organelle have numerous physiological functions closely associated with HS and viscosity, and accurate assessment of HS/viscosity fluctuations in lysosomes is essential for gaining a comprehensive understanding of lysosome-related physiological activities and pathological processes. The previous single-response fluorescent probes for either HS or viscosity alone have the potential to generate "false positive" signals in a complex biological environment. In contrast, dual-locked probes can simultaneously respond to multiple targets simultaneously, which could effectively eliminate this defect.

Article Synopsis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is commonly associated with oxidative stress, and this study explores the potential of atractylodin (ATR) to alleviate PCOS symptoms through its antioxidant properties.
  • A mouse model of PCOS was established to assess how ATR affects hormone levels, estrous cycles, and ovarian morphology, with in vitro experiments further investigating ATR's impact on cell viability and oxidative stress markers.
  • The findings suggest that ATR significantly improves hormone levels and ovarian structure by regulating the expression of PDK4 and inhibiting cell death, indicating ATR's potential as a therapeutic option for PCOS treatment.

Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of Juan Bi Pill (JBP) in treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: From February 2017 to May 2018, 115 participants from 4 centers were randomly divided into JBP group (57 cases) and placebo group (58 cases) in a 1:1 ratio using a random number table method. Participants received a dose of JBP (4 g, twice a day, orally) combined with methotrexate (MTX, 10 mg per week) or placebo (4 g, twice a day, orally) combined with MTX for 12 weeks.

The significant identification of Beclin-1's function in regulating autophagy flow signified a significant progression in our understanding of cellular operations. Beclin-1 acts as a scaffold for forming the PI3KC3 complex, controlling autophagy and cellular trafficking processes in a complicated way. This intricate protein has garnered considerable attention due to its substantial impact on the development of tumors.

Background: Renal fibrosis, a hallmark of chronic kidney disease, is closely associated with dysregulated gluconeogenesis. Tanshinone I (Tan I), a bioactive compound derived from the traditional Chinese medicine Danshen, exhibits antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its effects on gluconeogenesis and the mechanisms through which it alleviates renal fibrosis remain unclear.

Association between the Life's essential 8 health behaviors score and all-cause mortality in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

Metabolism

February 2025

Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology for Infectious Diseases (Ministry of Education), Institute for Viral Hepatitis, Department of Infectious Diseases, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.. Electronic address:

Background: The association between Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score and all-cause mortality in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remains unknown.

Methods: This population-based prospective cohort study analyzed data of participants aged 20-79 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2018, with linked mortality information until 2019. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between different cardiovascular health (CVH) scores and all-cause mortality in participants with MASLD.

Candida albicans is the most common aetiologic pathogen of fungal infections associated with high mortality in immunocompromised patients. There is an urgent need to develop new antifungal therapies owing to the poor efficacy and resistance of current antifungals. Here, we report that Trim72 positively regulates antifungal immunity during lethal fungal infection.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sepsis is a critical condition linked to high mortality rates in hospitals, and researchers are exploring microRNAs, especially miR-361-3p, for their potential role in predicting patient outcomes and understanding its impact on sepsis-induced heart damage.
  • - In the study, researchers used rat models and heart cell lines to investigate how manipulating levels of miR-361-3p affected myocardial injury and inflammation, utilizing various assays to measure key injury and inflammatory markers.
  • - The findings revealed that inhibiting miR-361-3p reduced myocardial injury and inflammation, while increasing its levels worsened these effects, suggesting that miR-361-3p interacts with USP49, ultimately influencing the NF-κB pathway

Article Synopsis
  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major cause of cancer deaths, and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are key treatments, but not all patients benefit from them, highlighting the need for predictive biomarkers.
  • Researchers developed a deep learning model (ResNet18-PG) using histopathology images from NSCLC patients to create an ICI-related pathological prognostic signature (ir-PPS) aimed at identifying patient prognosis and treatment response.
  • The model showed strong predictive capability with an AUC of 0.918 and identified low-risk patients who had significantly better progression-free survival (PFS) compared to high-risk patients, demonstrating its potential in optimizing ICI treatment selection.
