Purpose: Aging alters the function of the lacrimal gland and disrupts the balance of the microenvironment on the ocular surface, eventually leading to aqueous-tear-deficient dry eye. Mitophagy has been reported to play an important role in aging, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Methods: The young (6 weeks) and middle-aged (12 months) male C57BL/6J mice were used in this study, and mitophagy agonist rapamycin and inhibitor Mdivi-1 were used in in vivo experiments.

Biomark Res

November 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, No.139 Middle Renmin Road, Changsha, Hunan, 410011, China.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic lipid-driven inflammatory disease characterized by infiltration of large numbers of macrophages. The progression of the disease is closely related to the status of macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques. Recent advances in plaque analysis have revealed a subpopulation of macrophages that express high levels of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2).

iScience

October 2024

Department of Psychiatry, National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders, China National Technology Institute on Mental Disorders, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha 410011, Hunan, China.

The portrayed effects of olanzapine on brain development and neuronal response remain unclear under the genetic background of . Here, we constructed therapeutic-dosage olanzapine-treated cerebral organoid (CO) models using induced pluripotent stem cells from human samples. We found that the activation of NODAL/FOXH1 axis mediated the early response to olanzapine up to day 15, which subsequently caused thicker cortical-like structures, cell identity maturation, higher stemness of neural progenitor cells (NPCs), and mature neuronal firing of early neurons in day 24.

Cancer Cell Int

October 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Center of Stomatology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, P. R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are important for improving survival in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), but there are no standardized methods for measuring them or creating prognostic models based on TLS-related genes (TLSRGs).
  • In this study, researchers utilized a convolutional neural network to detect TLSs in tissue samples and developed a prognostic model using data from TCGA cohorts, identifying 69 differentially expressed TLSRGs, with three being crucial for creating a risk score model.
  • The study concluded that TLSs can independently predict both overall and disease-free survival in OSCC patients, and the developed nomogram offers a reliable method for predicting survival outcomes and guiding personalized treatment

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, PR China; Hunan Key Laboratory of Early Diagnosis and Precise Treatment of Lung Cancer, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, PR China. Electronic address:

The increased detection of synchronous multiple primary lung cancers (sMPLC) through advanced computed tomography underscores the necessity for innovative therapeutic approaches. sMPLC typically manifests as ground-glass opacities, mixed ground-glass opacities, and/or solid nodules, predominantly in early-stage, non-smoking female patients, with a majority being adenocarcinomas. The high prevalence of EGFR mutations and considerable heterogeneity among lesions pose distinct diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for sMPLC.
