Characterization of Gut Microbiota in Rats and Rhesus Monkeys After Methamphetamine Self-administration.

Mol Neurobiol

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry and National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha, 410011, Hunan, China.

Methamphetamine (MA) is one of the most abused drugs globally, but the mechanism of its addiction remains unclear. Several animal studies have shown that the gut microbiota (GM) influences addictive behaviors, but the pattern of GM changes during addiction in animals of different species remains unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the association between dynamic changes in GM and MA self-administration acquisition among two classical mammals, rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and rats, MA self-administration models.

Schizophrenia and risk preference: a bidirectional two-sample mendelian randomization study.

Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci

June 2024

Department of Psychiatry, National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, 410011, China.

Increasing evidence shows that risk preference is associated with schizophrenia. However, the causality and direction of this association are not clear; Therefore, we used Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine the potential bidirectional relationship between risk preference and schizophrenia. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary data on risk preference of 939,908 participants from the UK Biobank and 23andMe were used to identify general risk preference.

Myo-inositol rescued insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in db/db mice.

J Appl Biomed

June 2024

The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Department of Metabolism and Endocrinology, National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases, Changsha, China.

Myo-inositol (MI), present in a variety of foods, is essential in several important processes of cell physiology. In this study, we explored the protective effects of MI against hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in db/db mice, a typical animal model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). MI supplement effectively suppressed the high plasma glucose and insulin levels and markedly relieved the insulin resistance (IR) in the db/db mice, comparable to metformin's effects.

Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Xiangya Hospital; Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Hunan Key Laboratory of Pharmacogenetics, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, 87 Xiangya Road, Changsha, 410008, People's Republic of China.

Humans are exposed to various chemical elements that have been associated with the development and progression of diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD). Unlike previous research, we employed a multi-element approach to investigate CAD patients and those with comorbid conditions such as diabetes (CAD-DM2), high blood pressure (CAD-HBP), or high blood lipids (CAD-HBL). Plasma concentrations of 21 elements, including lithium (Li), boron (B), aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), strontium (Sr), cadmium (Cd), tin (Sn), stibium (Sb), barium (Ba), and lead (Pb), were measured in CAD patients (n = 201) and healthy subjects (n = 110) using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Cereb Cortex

June 2024

Department of Psychiatry, National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders, and National Center for Mental Disorders, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Furong District No. 139 Renmin Road, Changsha 410011, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers investigated brain structure differences in schizophrenia, focusing on cortical abnormalities, metabolite levels, and inflammation in patients and healthy controls.
  • The study involved 51 first-episode schizophrenia patients, 51 at ultra-high risk for psychosis, and 51 healthy individuals, examining gray matter volume and cortical thickness.
  • Findings suggested that increased cortical thickness in those at risk for psychosis might relate to inflammation, potentially helping initially but becoming harmful as the illness progresses.

  • Frozen shoulder is a common issue for middle-aged individuals, and while invasive therapies are effective, their costs limit accessibility; hence, many rely on NSAIDs, which can cause side effects when taken orally.
  • The study involved 108 patients divided into two groups: one using a loxoprofen hydrogel patch combined with physical therapy, and the other using a flurbiprofen cataplasm with the same therapy, with outcomes measured using the Constant-Murley score after 14 days.
  • Results showed that the loxoprofen group had a significantly higher effective rate (66.67%) compared to the flurbiprofen group (41.67%), with similar safety profiles for both treatments.

Melatonin, a versatile hormone produced by the pineal gland, has garnered considerable scientific interest due to its diverse functions. In the eye, melatonin regulates a variety of key processes like inhibiting angiogenesis by reducing vascular endothelial growth factor levels and protecting the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) integrity by enhancing tight junction proteins and pericyte coverage. Melatonin also maintains cell health by modulating autophagy via the Sirt1/mTOR pathways, reduces inflammation, promotes antioxidant enzyme activity, and regulates intraocular pressure fluctuations.
