Rod-Shaped Hemoglobin Crystals: Clues to the Diagnosis of Hemoglobin C Disease.

Indian J Hematol Blood Transfus

Department of Clinical Laboratory, South China Hospital, Medical School, Shenzhen University, 1 Fuxin Road, Shenzhen, 518111 China.

The typical rod-shaped HbC crystals in the peripheral blood smear often provide the diagnostic clue to the HbC disease. This case highlights that a careful review of blood film morphology may be helpful to detect HbC disease, although this case's routine blood test is normal and do not meet the rules of re-examinations.

Arthrocolins Synergizing with Fluconazole Inhibit Fluconazole-Resistant Candida albicans by Increasing Riboflavin Metabolism and Causing Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Autophagy.

Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Bio-Resources, Key Laboratory for Microbial Resources of the Ministry of Education, Yunnan University, Kunming, People's Republic of China.

Our previous study reported that seminaturally occurring arthrocolins A to C with unprecedented carbon skeletons could restore the antifungal activity of fluconazole against fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans. Here, we showed that arthrocolins synergized with fluconazole, reducing the fluconazole minimum and dramatically augmenting the survivals of 293T human cells and nematode Caenorhabditis elegans infected with fluconazole-resistant C. albicans.

Gastrointestinal colonization with carbapenem-resistant (CRE) is always a prerequisite for the development of translocated infections. Here, we sought to screen for fecal carriage of CRE and identify the risk factors for CRE colonization as well as subsequent translocated pneumonia in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a university hospital in China. We further focused on the intestinal flora composition and fecal metabolic profiles in CRE rectal colonization and translocated infection patients.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is currently considered to be one of the most common diseases that cause blindness. However, DR grading methods are still challenged by the presence of imbalanced class distributions, small lesions, low accuracy of small sample classes and poor explainability. To address these issues, a resampling-based cost loss attention network for explainable imbalanced diabetic retinopathy grading is proposed.

IFNγ/PD-L1 Signaling Improves the Responsiveness of Anti-PD-1 Therapy in Colorectal Cancer: An in vitro Study.

Onco Targets Ther

May 2021

Department of General Surgery, The Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University, The Second Hospital of Yunnan Province, Kunming, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China.

Introduction: Programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) can be upregulated in cancer cells via interferon gamma (IFNγ) in the tumor microenvironment. IFNγ/PD-L1 signaling is associated with the response to immune checkpoint blockade in melanoma patients. Our previous investigation indicated that the microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) cell line might exhibit selective hyperresponsiveness to IFNγ treatment, which contributes to increased PD-L1 expression and may be a mechanism of response to anti-PD-1 therapy in colorectal cancer.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing global public health concern and becoming the leading cause of liver disease worldwide. The estimated global prevalence of NAFLD is ∼25% depending on the country and the assessment method used to establish the diagnosis. Meta-analyses suggest that the highest prevalence is in the Middle East (31.

Attenuation of MAMLD1 Expression Suppresses the Growth and Migratory Properties of Gonadotroph Pituitary Adenomas.

Pathol Oncol Res

April 2020

Department of Neurosurgery, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, No. 519, Kunzhou Road, Kunming, Yunnan Province, 650118, People's Republic of China.

Gonadotroph pituitary adenomas (GPAs) constitute approximately 15-40% of pituitary tumors. Some GPAs can be highly infiltrative, making full surgical resection challenging and increasing the risk of recurrence. The transcriptional co-activator Mastermind-Like Domain Containing 1 (MAMLD1, CXorf6, F18) is involved in regulating signaling pathways important in pituitary tumorigenesis, including the Notch signaling pathway.

A Nomogram to Improve Predictability of Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction Surgery.

Med Sci Monit

October 2017

Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Key Lab, Beijing, China (mainland).

BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine and validate that use of a nomogram could enhance the predictability of small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS 195 eyes from 98 patients were enrolled in group 1, and 46 eyes from 26 patients in group 2. Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA), manifest refraction spherical equivalent (SE) preoperatively and 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively were measured.

Kunming Primate Research Center, Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming, Yunnan 650223, China.

The northern pig-tailed macaque (NPM,Macaca leonina) has become a widely used animal model in biomedical research. In this study, we measured serum immunoglobulin IgG, IgM, IgA, complement C3, C4 and CRP levels in 3-11 year old captive northern pig-tailed macaques using HITACHI 7600-20 automated chemistry analyzer in order to determine the influences of age and gender on these items. The results showed that serum IgA, IgM, C3 and C4 levels were not correlated with age (P>0.

Assessment of ascending aortic elasticity in hypertension patients by quantitative tissue velocity imaging.

J Huazhong Univ Sci Technolog Med Sci

December 2009

Department of Medical Ultrasound, the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Kunming Medical College, and the Second Hospital of Yunnan Province, Kunming 650021, China.

The elasticity of the ascending aorta in healthy volunteers and hypertension patients were examined by using quantitative tissue velocity imaging (QTVI), and the age-related change in the ascending aortic elasticity was investigated. The anterior and posterior walls of the ascending aorta were imaged with tissue Doppler method in all the subjects and QTVI was performed. Stable curves were obtained from 173 hypertension patients and 185 healthy adults.
