Background: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) and psychological distress are common psychological problems in breast cancer (BC) patients and ultimately affecting their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Heart rate variability (HRV) can reflect the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system. However, the pathways through which HRV influences between FCR and HRQoL are unclear.

The randomized, double-blinded, multi-center, phase III GEMSTONE-302 ( NCT03789604 ) study evaluated the efficacy and safety of sugemalimab versus placebo in combination with chemotherapy as first-line treatment for metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, 479 treatment-naive patients with stage IV squamous or non-squamous NSCLC without known EGFR sensitizing mutations, ALK, ROS1 or RET fusions were randomized (2:1) to receive 1,200 mg of sugemalimab (n = 320) or placebo (n = 159) every 3 weeks in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy for up to four cycles, followed by maintenance therapy with sugemalimab or placebo for squamous NSCLC and sugemalimab or placebo plus pemetrexed for non-squamous NSCLC. Placebo-treated patients could cross over to receive sugemalimab monotherapy on disease progression.

Amelioratory effects of astragaloside IV on hepatocarcinogenesis via Nrf2-mediated pSmad3C/3L transformation.

Phytomedicine

August 2023

Department of Pharmacology, School of Basic Medicine, Anhui Medical University, Key Laboratory of Anti-inflammatory and Immunopharmacology, Ministry of Education, 230032, 81 Meishan Road, Hefei, China. Electronic address:

Background: Phosphorylated Smad3 isoforms are reversible and antagonistic, and the tumour-suppressive pSmad3C can shift to an oncogenic pSmad3L signal. In addition, Nrf2 has a two-way regulatory effect on tumours, protecting normal cells from carcinogens and promoting tumour cell survival in chemotherapeutics. Accordingly, we hypothesised that the transformation of pSmad3C/3L is the basis for Nrf2 to produce both pro- and/or anti-tumourigenic effects in hepatocarcinogenesis.

The role of Raptor in lymphocytes differentiation and function.

Front Immunol

June 2023

Department of Pathogen Biology, School of Basic Medicine, Tongji Medical College and State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Severe Zoonostic Infectious Disease, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Hubei, China.

Raptor, a key component of mTORC1, is required for recruiting substrates to mTORC1 and contributing to its subcellular localization. Raptor has a highly conserved N-terminus domain and seven WD40 repeats, which interact with mTOR and other mTORC1-related proteins. mTORC1 participates in various cellular events and mediates differentiation and metabolism.

No genetic causal association between systemic lupus erythematosus and COVID-19.

Front Immunol

June 2023

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Emerging evidence suggests that patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may have a higher prevalence of COVID-19 than the general population, but the results are inconsistent and the cause is unclear.
  • The study utilized bidirectional Mendelian randomization to explore the causal relationship between SLE and COVID-19, involving various analytical methods.
  • Results indicated no significant causal relationship between SLE and COVID-19; any observed association in previous studies may be due to confounding factors rather than a direct cause-effect relationship.

Background: Babao Dan (BBD) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been widely used as a complementary and alternative medicine to treat chronic liver diseases. In this study, we aimed to observe the effect of BBD on the incidence of diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-initiated hepatocellular carcinoma formation in rats and explored its possible mechanism.

Methods: To verify this hypothesis, BBD was administrated to rats at a dose of 0.

Association between air pollution exposure and outpatient visits for dermatomyositis in a humid subtropical region of China: a time-series study.

Environ Geochem Health

August 2023

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Anhui Medical University, 81 Meishan Road, Hefei, 230032, Anhui, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies indicate that air pollution significantly affects the development of autoimmune diseases, but there's limited research specifically on dermatomyositis (DM) and its connection to air pollutants.
  • This investigation focused on the link between short-term air pollution exposure and DM outpatient visits in Hefei, China, using hospital records from 2018 to 2021, and employed advanced statistical models for analysis.
  • The findings revealed that high levels of nitrogen dioxide increased DM outpatient visits, while ozone exposure reduced the risk, particularly more pronounced in the cold season, highlighting the need for further research in this area.
