Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, primarily driven by insulin resistance (IR). Although the herbal compound Chaihu Shugan powder (CSP) has demonstrated the potential to improve IR in animal models of MS, its mechanism of action remains incompletely understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the biological pathways through which CSP exerts its therapeutic effects on IR in MS using both and methods.

State Key Laboratory of Dampness Syndrome of Chinese Medicine, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, China; Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Clinical Research on Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers examined three specific polysaccharides from Vinegar-baked Radix Bupleuri (VR) to understand their structure and combined effects.
  • The polysaccharides displayed different molecular weights and structural features, with VRP3-3 identified as the most effective when used alongside chemotherapy drugs like paclitaxel and methotrexate.
  • Overall, the study reveals that certain structural elements, particularly in VRP3-3, enhance its ability to support chemotherapy treatment for Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC).

Myocardial remodeling (MR) following myocardial infarction (MI) contributes to heart failure. Inflammation is a key determinant in cardiac remodeling, with potential prognostic improvements by inhibiting inflammatory factors. Pattern recognition receptors, including interferon gamma-inducible protein-16 (IFI-16), play significant roles in this process, yet its specific involvement remains underexplored.

Clinical Medical College of Acupuncture Moxibustion and Rehabilitation, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, South China Research Center for Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Guangzhou 510006, China.

Objectives: To investigate the impact of combined treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) with electroacupuncture (EA) and capeOX (combined administration of fluorouracil, oxaliplatin and capecitabine) on the tumor volume, weight, spleen coefficient, apoptosis and ferroptosis of tumor tissue, and liver and kidney functions in nude mice with CRC, so as to explore its mechanisms underlying inhibiting CRC and alleviating toxic reactions of capeOX.

Methods: Female Balb/c nude mice were randomly assigned to 3 groups:model, capeOX, and EA+capeOX, with 8 nude mice in each group. The CRC model was established by subcutaneous injection of colon cancer cells at the right inguinal region.

Most patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH) derive benefit from conservative treatment, prompting growing global interest in non-surgical approaches. Despite being recognized as one of the effective conservative therapies, there is currently limited evidence to support the sole efficacy of acupuncture in treating patients with acute extruded LDH. Here we report the case of a 52-year-old male who presented with low back pain and persistent radiating lower limb pain and numbness.

Chief Physician, Professor, Emergency Department of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China; Team leader, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Research on Emergency in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Clinical Research Team for Prevention and Treatment of Cardiac Emergencies with Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China.

Context: Scrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, has a wide range of clinical manifestations, including meningoencephalitis, acute renal failure, pneumonitis, myocarditis, and septic shock. However, there are no documented cases of scrub typhus with hypokalemia. In this report, we present a case of scrub typhus with hypokalemia and multiple organ failure syndrome, highlighting the importance of electrolyte imbalance in patients with scrub typhus.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Xiaoqinglong decoction (XQLD) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat allergic rhinitis (AR) by reducing inflammation, though its exact action is not fully understood.
  • This study investigates the role of the NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis pathway in AR and how XQLD affects it.
  • Results show XQLD improves nasal allergy symptoms in mice, lowers key inflammatory factors, and inhibits the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome through interactions with its compounds.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation often obtain de novo resistance or develop secondary resistance to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), which restricts the clinical benefit for the patients. The activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT signal pathway is one of the most important mechanisms for the EGFR-TKIs resistance beyond T790M mutation. There are currently no drugs simultaneously targeting EGFR and PI3K signal pathways, and combination of these two pathway inhibitors may be a possible strategy to reverse theses resistances.

Article Synopsis
  • Small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA), especially duodenal adenocarcinoma (DA), is a rare and aggressive form of cancer with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis.
  • Despite chemotherapy being the most commonly used treatment, it typically only offers a median progression-free survival of five months for patients.
  • A case study showed that combining the immune checkpoint inhibitor tislelizumab with irinotecan in second-line treatment resulted in an impressive 17-month progression-free survival, suggesting that this combination warrants further research for its potential effectiveness against SBA.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical therapeutic efficacy of anti-snake venom serum blockade in treating local tissue necrosis caused by Chinese cobra (Naja atra) bites.

Methods: Patients bitten by a Chinese cobra (Naja atra) (n = 50) that met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group (n = 25) and the control group (n = 25). The experimental group received regular as well as anti-snake venom serum blocking treatment, whereas regular treatment plus chymotrypsin blocking therapy was given to the control group.

Stable angina is a common condition with high morbidity and mortality rates. It has been reported that combining oral Chinese patent medicines (OCPMs) and Western medicine (WM) could potentially achieve a better effect than WM alone. However, the optimal OCPMs for stable angina remain controversial and merit further empirical research.

Acute tonsillitis has high morbidity. Chinese herbal injections (CHIs) were reported to be useful in treating acute tonsillitis and might reduce the probability of antibiotic resistance. Nevertheless, the optimal strategy for combining CHIs with western medicine (WM) to treat acute tonsillitis remains unclear.

Dissecting the ferroptosis-related prognostic biomarker and immune microenvironment of driver gene-negative lung cancer.

Exp Biol Med (Maywood)

August 2022

Department of Oncology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou 510120, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Despite advancements in therapies for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), effective treatments for patients with low PD-L1 expression remain challenging, highlighting the importance of understanding molecular mechanisms like ferroptosis.
  • Analysis of 351 NSCLC samples revealed two distinct clusters related to ferroptosis, where one cluster demonstrated poorer overall survival and stronger negative immune regulation.
  • A gene signature tied to ferroptosis was established and validated, showing potential to predict prognosis and response to immunotherapy, suggesting that targeting ferroptosis could lead to new treatment options for NSCLC patients.
