Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a frequent causative agent of post-pneumonectomy empyema-associated broncho-pleural fistula (BPF) and it has a high mortality rate. In recent years, the therapeutic potential of bacteriophage therapy has recognized anew as antimicrobial resistance increases globally. Studies are increasingly reporting the efficacy and safety of bacteriophage therapy for the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.

Dysfunctional immune responses contribute critically to the progression of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19), with macrophages as one of the main cell types involved. It is urgent to understand the interactions among permissive cells, macrophages, and the SARS-CoV-2 virus, thereby offering important insights into effective therapeutic strategies. Here, we establish a lung and macrophage co-culture system derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), modeling the host-pathogen interaction in SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background And Aim: Functional dyspepsia symptom diary (FDSD) is a newly designed questionnaire of functional dyspepsia (FD). The relationships between FDSD and other FD-related questionnaires and patient-reported severity remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the correlations between FDSD and other questionnaires and to determine the relationships between FDSD and FD severity.

We report a patient with severe spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM), pneumothorax and widespread subcutaneous emphysema with acute epiglottitis after inhaling pepper spray. The effects of pepper spray, which is a lachrymatory agent, on the respiratory system have not been reported. Upper airway obstruction is not a well-described cause of SPM, with which subcutaneous emphysema and pneumothorax might coexist; thus, mechanical ventilation might be detrimental.

The members of the glutathione S-transferase (GST) superfamily often exhibit functional overlap and can compensate for each other. Their concentrations in serum are considered as disease biomarkers. A global and quantitative evaluation of serum GSTs is therefore urgent, but there is a lack of efficient approaches due to technological limitations.

Understanding the mechanism of particle transport and sedimentation in pulmonary alveolus is important for deciphering the causes of respiratory diseases and helping the development of drug delivery. In this study, taking advantage of the microfluidic technique, an experimental platform was developed to study particle behavior in a rhythmically expanding alveolar chip for a sufficient number of cycles. The alveolar flow patterns at different generations were measured for two cases with the gravity direction parallel or vertical to the alveolar duct.

In order to analyze the distribution characteristics of pharyngeal bacteria in patients with chronic pharyngitis (CP) by 16SrDNA-based detection technology, a prospective study is conducted to collect pharyngeal secretion samples from patients diagnosed with CP who are admitted to the Otorhinolaryngology Department of The Third People's Hospital of Shenzhen from May 2021 to September 2021. Among them, 11 cases are chronic simple pharyngitis (CSP), 11 cases are chronic hypertrophic pharyngitis (CHP), and 8 cases are healthy subjects. All samples are detected by the 16SrDNA technique and analyzed by bioinformatics.

The immunoregulation of platelets and platelet-monocyte aggregates (PMAs) is increasingly recognized, but it roles in tuberculosis (TB) remain to be elucidated. In this study, we found that CD14CD41 PMAs were increased in peripheral blood of patients with active TB. CD14CD41 PMAs highly expressed triggering receptors expressed on myeloid cells (TREMs)-like transcript-1 (TLT-1), P-selectin (CD62P), and CD40L.

Background: Nearly 4 billion doses of the BNT162b2-mRNA and CoronaVac-inactivated vaccines have been administrated globally, yet different vaccine-induced immunity against SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) remain incompletely investigated.
Methods: We compare the immunogenicity and durability of these two vaccines among fully vaccinated Hong Kong people.
Findings: Standard BNT162b2 and CoronaVac vaccinations were tolerated and induced neutralizing antibody (NAb) (100% and 85.

Helicobacter pylori infection is a prevalent infectious disease, associated with many gastric diseases, including gastritis, gastric ulcer, and gastric cancer. To reveal the characteristics of the gastric microbiome in patients infected with H. pylori, we performed metagenomic shotgun sequencing of stomach swab samples from 96 patients and then conducted metagenomic association analyses between alterations in the gastric microbiome and H.

Background: Few data are available regarding the long-term case-fatality rate (CFR) among people living with HIV (PLWH) with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) disease. The aim of this study is to analyze the long-term CFR in patients with NTM disease and to identify risk factors for their death.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 379 cases of microbiologically confirmed NTM disease in PLWH was conducted from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2020, in Shanghai, China.

Spleen micro-perfusion level can be evaluated by DDVD (diffusion derived vessel density): DDVD (unit: au/pixel) = Sb0/ROIarea0 - Sb2/ROIarea2, where Sb0 and Sb2 refer to the spleen signal when b is 0 or 2 (s/mm) and ROI is 'region-of-interest'. This study investigated whether spleen DDVD is altered in patients with viral hepatitis-b (VHB) liver fibrosis. Three datasets were retrospectively analysed.

Based on the data of Global Burden of Disease 2019 data, to analyze the past, current, and future burden of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in China and compare with the international status. The total number of DALYs, age-standardized DALY rate, and the composition of different subgroups were extracted and described to analyze the time trend in 2000-2019 and the current situation in 2019 for Chinese female breast cancer. The burden of DALYs in 2050 was predicted by Joinpoint using average annual percent change (AAPC).

Background: Vaccines in emergency use are efficacious against COVID-19, yet vaccine-induced prevention against nasal SARS-CoV-2 infection remains suboptimal.
Methods: Since mucosal immunity is critical for nasal prevention, we investigated the efficacy of an intramuscular PD1-based receptor-binding domain (RBD) DNA vaccine (PD1-RBD-DNA) and intranasal live attenuated influenza-based vaccines (LAIV-CA4-RBD and LAIV-HK68-RBD) against SARS-CoV-2.
Findings: Substantially higher systemic and mucosal immune responses, including bronchoalveolar lavage IgA/IgG and lung polyfunctional memory CD8 T cells, were induced by the heterologous PD1-RBD-DNA/LAIV-HK68-RBD as compared with other regimens.

Co-infection of () and () is frequently observed in intensive care unit (ICU) patients but difficult to eliminate. Current clinical practice based on microbial population characterization and single-species-based antibiotic resistance profiling has ignored the potential interspecies interactions, which might lead to novel drug-resistance phenotypes. Here, we investigated the impacts of interspecies interactions on antibiotic therapies by establishing a and dual-species biofilm model.

Limited understanding of T cell responses against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has impeded vaccine development and drug discovery for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We found that triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM-2) was induced in T cells in the blood and lungs of patients with COVID-19. After binding to SARS-CoV-2 membrane (M) protein through its immunoglobulin domain, TREM-2 then activated the CD3ζ/ZAP70 complex, leading to STAT1 phosphorylation and T-bet transcription.
