[Application of allograft and autologous bone graft in posterolateral lumbar fusion].

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effect of local autogenous bone chips extended with allogeneic bone grafts in the posterolateral lumbar fusion.

Methods: From March 2005 to April 2007, 22 cases which underwent posterolateral lumbar fusion with allograft bone mixed with local autograft bone were analyzed retrospectively. The postoperative temperature, drainage flow and healing time of the incision were analyzed; postoperative lumbar pain was evaluated by visual analog scale (VAS) and JOA score; the postoperative efficacy was assessed by MacNab criteria and Oswestry disability index (ODI); the fusion rate was defined by Jorgenson fusion criteria.

Hepatocellular carcinoma with bile duct tumor thrombi: correlation of magnetic resonance imaging features to histopathologic manifestations.

Purpose: This study was to analyze the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with bile duct tumor thrombi, and explore their correlations to histopathology to improve the accuracy of diagnosis.

Materials And Methods: 21 patients with pathologically confirmed HCC with bile duct tumor thrombi was performed with a superconducting 1.5-T MR imager within two weeks before operation.

Upregulation of CENP-H in tongue cancer correlates with poor prognosis and progression.

Background: Centromere protein H (CENP-H) is one of the fundamental components of the human active kinetochore. Recently, CENP-H was identified to be associated with tumorigenesis. This study was aimed to investigate the clinicopathologic significance of CENP-H in tongue cancer.

[Clinical analysis of inappropriate shock of implantable cardioverter defibrillators].

Objective: Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) can effectively treat life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. The most common side effect is inappropriate discharge. This study analyzes the incidence and causes of inappropriate discharges of ICD in our hospital.

[Cochlear otosclerosis: 3 cases report and literature review].

Objective: To investigate the clinical features in cochlear otosclerosis.

Method: Three cases with cochlear otosclerosis in our hospital from March 2007 to October 2008 were reported and the relevant literatures were reviewed. All the cases were confirmed the diagnose by temporal bone high-resolution CT scan (HRCT).

Removal of the submandibular gland using a combined retroauricular and transoral approach.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and outcome of a combined retroauricular and transoral approach for removing the submandibular gland.

Patients And Methods: Thirteen patients underwent removal of benign submandibular gland lesions (6 sialoadenitis with sialolithiasis, 4 chronic sialoadenitis, and 3 pleomorphic adenomas) using a combined retroauricular and intraoral approach.

Results: All 13 submandibular sialoadenectomies were successful and all of the wounds healed uneventfully.

Removal of second branchial cleft cysts using a retroauricular approach.

Background: Second branchial cleft cysts (also called cervical lymphoepithelial cysts) usually present in adulthood, and cosmesis of surgical access is an important issue. This study was performed to assess the feasibility and outcome of a retroauricular approach for removing second branchial cleft cysts.

Methods: Eight patients underwent removal of second branchial cleft cysts using a retroauricular approach.

Expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and vascular endothelial growth factor in ameloblastoma.

The purposes of this study were to determine the correlation between the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in ameloblastoma and to examine the relationships of this expression to angiogenesis and the clinical and biological behaviors of the tumor. Immunohistochemical staining with streptavidin peroxidase was used to analyze iNOS and VEGF expression, and CD34 was used to evaluate microvascular density (MVD) in 35 ameloblastomas (24 primary tumors and 11 recurrences) and 5 malignant ameloblastomas. Ten odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) served as controls.

Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy of lip mucosa hemangiomas under inhalation general anesthesia with sevoflurane in early infancy.

Mucous membrane hemangiomas of the lip are common benign vascular tumors of infancy. This clinical study evaluated the efficacy and safety of liquid nitrogen cryotherapy of mucous membrane hemangiomas of the lip in early infancy. It was a retrospective review of 127 pediatric patients with hemangiomas involving the lips who underwent liquid nitrogen cryotherapy under inhalation general anesthesia with sevoflurane.

[A survey of bile duct injuries sustained during laparoscopic cholecystectomy].

Objective: To summarize the reasons for bile duct injury (BDI) after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), and to determine the effect of multiple treatment after BDI.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed. The medical records of 110 patients diagnosed with BDI after LC from October 1993 to November 2007, in ten large hospitals in Guangdong of China, were reviewed.

[Compare of laparoscopic and open surgery for radical cystectomy with orthotopic ileal neobladder].

Objective: To compare the clinical therapeutic effect and complications of laparoscopic radical cystectomy with orthotopic ileal neobladder (LRC-INB) with open radical cystectomy with orthotopic ileal neobladder (ORC-INB).

Methods: A total of 171 patients were evaluated, including 63 cases with ORC-INB and 108 cases with LRC-INB from June 1994 to May 2007 at our institution. The parameters analyzed included perioperative data, postoperative complications, new bladder function and effect of tumor control.

Transcription factor decoys for activator protein-1 (AP-1) inhibit oxidative stress-induced proliferation and matrix metalloproteinases in rat cardiac fibroblasts.

Activator protein-1 (AP-1), which is a transcription factor, is implicated in the transcriptional regulation of a wide range of genes that participate in cell proliferation and extracellular matrix production. This investigation was performed to test the hypothesis that transfection of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) with sufficient amounts of decoy oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) containing the AP-1-binding site would result in binding to the transfactor AP-1, which would thereby prevent CF proliferation and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression. CFs from Sprague-Dawley rat hearts were cultured and exposed to different concentrations of xanthine + xanthine oxidase (XXO) and AP-1 decoy ODNs.

[Imaging manifestations and pathologic features of soft tissue desmoid-type fibromatosis].

Background & Objective: Soft tissue desmoid-type fibromatosis is a type of benign, infiltrative tumors which are rarely seen. This study was to analyze CT and MR manifestations and pathologic features of soft tissue desmoid-type fibromatosis to improve its diagnostic accuracy.

Methods: A total of 34 soft tissue desmoid-type fibromatosis from 29 patients, including 20 primary and 14 recurrent tumors were analyzed.

The role of ovarian volume as a diagnostic criterion for Chinese adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Background: This study revisited the ovarian volume (OV) as one of the diagnostic criteria for Chinese adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is unknown whether the threshold of 10 cm(3) for the OV, chosen at the PCOS international consensus in 2003, was optimal for Chinese PCOS adolescents or not.

Methods: 69 adolescent PCOS patients and 26 controls were involved in this study.

Methods: Nine patients (five males and four females ranging in age from 18 to 74 years; mean age 51.3 years) with advanced oral malignant tumours were treated at our institution.

Objective: To investigate the clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapy of syphilis with sensorineural deafness.

Method: Three patients of syphilis with sensorineural deafness were analyzed including the clinical manifestation, serum and therapy response.

Result: Three patients of syphilis with sensorineural deafness: 2 cases with rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and treponema pallidum particle agglutination (TPPA) positive, 1 case with RPR negative and TPPA positive; 2 cases had been diagnosed with syphilis and treated once; 2 cases with sudden sensorineural deafness and tinnitus, 1 case with tinnitus and high-frequency hearing loss.

[Effects of electroacupuncture on urinary bladder function after radical hysterectomy].

Objective: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture on recovery of urinary bladder function after radical hysterectomy.

Methods: One hundred and ten cases were randomly divided into an electroacupuncture (EA) group and a control group, 55 cases in each group. In the control group, the urinary tube was placed and kept with routine method and the urinary bladder was rinsed, and from the eighth day the abdomen was radiated with TDP, 30 min each day, for 5 days.

Objective: To assess the value of ovarian volume and follicle number in the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in a Chinese population.

Methods: This study included 432 women with PCOS selected using the National Institutes of Health criteria, who were compared with 153 age-matched women as controls. All participants were given a transvaginal or transrectal ultrasound scan during day 3-5 of the menstrual cycle (for regularly menstruating women) or randomly (for oligomenorrheic or amenorrheic women).
