Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of intestinal ischemia reperfusion (IIR) injury. Enhancement in endogenous Lipoxin A4 (LXA4), a potent antioxidant and mediator, is associated with attenuation of IIR. However, the effects of LXA4 on IIR injury and the potential mechanisms are unknown.

The GSTP1 gene plays an important role in detoxification of carcinogens. GSTP1 gene polymorphisms may alter the susceptibility of urinary system cancer. Numerous studies have been performed to investigate the association between GSTP1 Ile105Val (rs1695 A>G) polymorphism and urinary system cancer risk.

Sepsis is characterized by dysregulated systemic inflammation with release of early (for example, interleukin (IL)-1β) and late (for example, HMGB1) proinflammatory mediators from macrophages. Plumbagin, a medicinal plant-derived naphthoquinone, has been reported to exhibit antiinflammatory activity, but the underling mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we have demonstrated that plumbagin inhibits the inflammatory response through interfering with the immunometabolism pathway in activated macrophages.

Objective: To investigate therapeutic effect of carotid artery stenting versus endarterectomy for patients with high-risk carotid stenosis.
Methods: A total of 130 carotid stenosis patients at high-risk of stroke were randomly divided into stenting group and endarterectomy group, including 65 patients in each group. The patients in the endarterectomy group underwent endarterectomy and those in the stenting group received carotid artery stenting for treatment.

Graves' disease (GD) is postulated to be caused by the combined effects of susceptibility genes and environmental triggers. Toll like receptors (TLRs) play a role in the activation of innate and adaptive immune responses in mammalians. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential association of TLR4 and TLR5 gene polymorphisms with GD in Chinese Cantonese population.

Abstract Cell death (apoptosis and necrosis) and extracellular matrix destruction induced by oxidative stress have been suggested to be closely involved in the process of disc degeneration. Glutathione, a natural peptide as a powerful antioxidant in human cytoplasm, plays an important role in protecting living cells. This study is to investigate whether glutathione could retard degenerated phenotypes in cultured disc cells.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia seen in cardiovascular departments. Treatments include medical interventions and catheter ablation. Due to uncertainties in medical therapies for AF, and the need to continue sinus rhythm, ablation has been recently considered as a viable alternative.

Objective: To explore an ideal procedure with more lasting aesthetic results by covering the orbicularis oculi muscles with the superficial temporal fascia flap in rhytidectomy, which can help to correct the crow's feet successfully.
Methods: During rhytidectomy, dissection was performed subcutaneously and also under pericranium and superficial temporal fascia at temporal area. Then the superficial temporal fascia flap was formed by cutting between pericranium and superficial temporal fascia.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe use of the medial umbilical ligament (MUL) as a reinforcing flap to cover the internal ring (IR) during laparoscopic herniorrhaphy in children with indirect inguinal hernia.
Methods: Laparoscopic high ligation of the IR was performed in a cohort (A) of 110 children with 140 indirect hernias between October 2001 and December 2004. We then developed "recurrence risk criteria" to explain four recurrences (2.

Objective: To explore the application of the remnant in repairing the reconstructed ear in microtia.
Methods: From October 2000 to July 2006, 1,823 patients with reconstructed ear underwent the second operation for repairing. The remnants were used to reconstruct tragus, antitragus, crus of helix, concha cavum, or relax the adhesion between the reconstructed auricle and cranio wall, or insert into the reconstructed lobule or under the basement of the costal cartilage frame to restore the cranio-auricular angle or to the preauricular subcutaneous to correct the facial local depression.

Objective: To develop and evaluate the laparoscopic herniorrhaphy combined ligation of the hernial sac and suturation of the internal ring in children with indirect inguinal hernias.
Methods: Fifty-one indirect hernias in consecutive 41 children with indirect hernias underwent the herniorrhaphy from January 2003 to August 2005. The general information, operating time, postoperative duration in hospital, duration return to normal activity, operative faults, and complications were collected.

Objective: To explore the methodology and operative essentials of laparoscopic cholecystectomy with remote Zeus surgical robotic system.
Methods: Based on strict training and successful experiment in animal model of swine, laparoscopic cholecystectomy using Zeus robotic system was performed on 16 patients with biliary diseases, including choledocholithiasis, cholelithiasis, polyposis of gallbladder, and chronic cholecystitis, 10 males and 16 females, aged 33 (14 approximately 27), 26 April to 31 August 2004. The general data, preoperative preparation time, operation time, amount of bleeding, complications, and hospitalization time were analyzed.

Objectives: To investigate the significance of c-fos oncogene morphogenetic protein's locational expression, and the correlativity between nerve transmitters calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) expression and nerve root's functional change using the animal model of the chronic compressive injury in the nerve root.
Methods: The animal model of chronic compressive injury of the nerve root was established by transplanting autogenous cancellous bone into the intervertebral foramen. During different injury phase (1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 weeks after operation), the functional status of the nerve root was determined under the monitoring of evoked potential, and the expression changes of c-fos oncogene morphogenetic protein and nerve transmitter CGRP were detected using in situ hybridization technique and their expression intensity was determined using automatic image analytic instrument respectively.

Objectives: To determine the relative value of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in exploring the potential embolic source (PES) in heart and aortic arch and to study the clinical significance of aortic arch atherosclerosis (AAA).
Methods: Forty-nine patients with cerebral embolism were included in this study. TEE and TTE were used to evaluate the potential source of emboli in aortic arch, heart and duplex in the carotid artery.
