Background: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD) exhibit a high mortality risk, particularly at the onset of treatment. Conventional risk assessment models, dependent on extensive temporal data accumulation, frequently encounter issues of data incompleteness and lengthy collection periods.
Objective: This study addresses the imbalance in short-term HD data and the issue of missing data features, achieving a robust assessment of mortality risk for HD patients over the subsequent 30 to 450 days.

With the progression of global aging, neurological diseases in elderly individuals have aroused widespread interest among researchers. Imbalances in the homeostasis of neuronal microenvironments, including neural progenitor cells and microglia, are the leading cause of worsening neurodegenerative diseases. The aging of various glial cells can further lead to abnormal functions in the central nervous system (CNS).

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a man-made chemical broadly distributed in various ecological environment and human bodies, which poses potential health risks. Its toxicity, especially the male reproduction toxicity has drawn increasing attention due to declining birth rates in recent years. However, how PFOA induces male reproductive toxicity remains unclear.

Background: Accurately forecasting patients admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) after surgery may improve clinical outcomes and guide the allocation of expensive and limited ICU resources. However, studies on predicting postoperative ICU admission in non-cardiac surgery have been limited.
Objective: To develop and validate a prediction model combining pre- and intraoperative variables to predict ICU admission after non-cardiac surgery.

Background And Objective: Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is closely associated with adverse clinical outcomes in HD-patients. An IDH predictor model is important for IDH risk screening and clinical decision-making. In this study, we used Machine learning (ML) to develop IDH model for risk prediction in HD patients.

Automatic detection of retinal diseases based on deep learning technology and Ultra-widefield (UWF) images plays an important role in clinical practices in recent years. However, due to small lesions and limited data samples, it is not easy to train a detection-accurate model with strong generalization ability. In this paper, we propose a lesion attention conditional generative adversarial network (LAC-GAN) to synthesize retinal images with realistic lesion details to improve the training of the disease detection model.

Purpose: Advances in mass spectrometry have provided new insights into the role of metabolomics in the etiology of several diseases. Studies on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), for example, overlooked the role of metabolic alterations in disease development. We employed comprehensive metabolic profiling and gold-standard metabolic analysis to explore major metabolites and metabolic pathways, which were significantly affected in early stages of pathogenesis toward ROP.

Background: The incidence rates of thyroid tumors and nodular goiter show an upward trend worldwide. There are limited reports on the risk of perchlorate and iodine on thyroid tumors, but evidence from population studies is scarce, and their impact on thyroid function is still uncertain. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the association of perchlorate and iodine with the risk of nodular goiter (NG), papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and to assess the correlation between perchlorate and iodine with thyroid function indicators.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine degree of postoperative pain and the incidence of serious postoperative pain after glaucoma surgery and further to identify the associated risk factors.
Methods: A total of 194 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with glaucoma and underwent glaucoma surgery were enrolled in this study. The intensity of postoperative pain was evaluated using numerical rating scale (NRS) within 24 h after surgery; NRS ≥ 5 was considered as clinically significant postoperative pain.

Purpose: Because of the direct contact of intravitreal silicone oil (SO) with the subcapsular membrane, cataract is one of the main SO-related complications. In a group of patients, condense subcapsular opacification occurs, which adds difficulty and risk when having sequential treatment of it. The aim of the current study is to assess the long-term outcomes of pars plana subcapsulotomy to remove condense subcapsular opacification in combined surgery of SO removal and phacoemulsification.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a rapidly progressive, aggressive metastatic and lethal subtype of lung cancer. Unfortunately, there has been little progress regarding the development of novel treatments for SCLC. However, lurbinectedin, a transcriptional inhibitor, has emerged as a potential novel treatment for cancer.

Fundus diseases classification is vital for the health of human beings. However, most of existing methods detect diseases by means of single angle fundus images, which lead to the lack of pathological information. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a novel deep learning method to complete different fundus diseases classification tasks using ultra-wide field scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) images, which have an ultra-wide field view of 180-200˚.

High-dimensional data are pervasive in this bigdata era. To avoid the curse of the dimensionality problem, various dimensionality reduction (DR) algorithms have been proposed. To facilitate systematic DR quality comparison and assessment, this paper reviews related metrics and develops an open-source Python package pyDRMetrics.

Objectives: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of midbrain dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The present study investigated miR-141-3p/sirtuin1 (SIRT1) activity in a 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium- (MPP+-) induced PC12-cell model of PD.
Methods: PC12 cells were exposed to MMP+ following induction of differentiation by nerve growth factor (NGF).

The scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) has become an important tool for the determination of peripheral retinal pathology, in recent years. However, the collected SLO images are easily interfered by the eyelash and frame of the devices, which heavily affect the key feature extraction of the images. To address this, we propose a generative adversarial network called AMD-GAN based on the attention encoder (AE) and multi-branch (MB) structure for fundus disease detection from SLO images.

Tumor-initiating cells (TICs) maintain heterogeneity within tumors and seed metastases at distant sites, contributing to therapeutic resistance and disease recurrence. In colorectal cancer (CRC), strategy that effectively eradicates TICs and is of potential value for clinical use still remains in need. : The anti-tumorigenic activity of a small-molecule inhibitor of KDM6 histone demethylases named GSK-J4 in CRC was evaluated by assays and imaging of xenografted tumors.

Background: Budd-Chiari syndrome is defined as hepatic venous outflow tract obstruction. For Asian Budd-Chiari syndrome patients, the major treatment modality is recanalization (percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with or without stent implantation). The cumulative 1-, 5-, and 10-year primary patency rates and survival rates are reported to be excellent or satisfactory, but the long-term outcome of patients with restenosis (the most common complication after recanalization) is unknown.

Aim: To compare the efficacy and safety between laser therapy and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents intravitreal injection monotherapy in type-1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (APROP).
Methods: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase for original comparable studies. We included studies that compare laser therapy and intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents monotherapy in ROP regardless of languages and publication types.
