The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of the traditional Chinese medicine Qili qiangxin on cardiomyocyte apoptosis following myocardial infarction (MI) in a rat model. MI was induced in rats by ligation of the anterior descending coronary artery. Survivors were randomly divided into the sham operation, MI, and Qili qiangxin groups (4 g/kg per day).

The transfection efficiency of wild-type p53 (wtp53) was investigated in retinoblastoma (RB) Y79 cells using an ultrasound microbubble technique. A human RB nude mouse xenograft tumour model was also used to investigate whether this technique could deliver wtp53 into solid tumours. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) demonstrated that wtp53 was successfully transfected into Y79 cells in the plasmid with microbubbles and ultrasound group and in the plasmid with liposomes group, but not in the plasmid with ultrasound group or in the untreated control group.

Background: There is no effective axon regeneration in adult mammalians.

Objective: To investigate the effects of dual-acid cyclic adenosine monophosphate (db-cAMP) on the axon regeneration, motor function recovery and RhoA signal pathway in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion rats, and to explore the possible clinical application and mechanism.

Materials And Methods: Middle cerebral artery ischemia-reperfusion model was established by nylon monofilament occlusion method in 105 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats.

Aims: This study was designed to explore the effect of the xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor allopurinol on cardiomyocyte apoptosis after myocardial infarction (MI) in a rat model.

Methods And Results: MI was induced in rats by ligation of the anterior descending coronary artery. Survivors were randomly divided into three groups: sham operation group, MI group, and allopurinol group (50 mg kg(-1) day(-1)).

Objective: To explore the possible mechanism and optimal treatment phase of glycine for inhibition lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced Kupffer cells (KCs) activation.

Methods: The KCs were isolated from 40 BALB/c mice and divided into four groups: the endotoxin group, the prevention group, the early treatment group and the later treatment group (n = 10). The endotoxin group was treated with 10 mg/L LPS, and in the other three groups, glycine (1 mmol/L) was given 24 h before, or at 0 h or 4 h respectively after LPS stimulation.

Objective: To study the effect of Shuxuetong injection on cerebral tissue and brain microvascular endothelial cell(BMEC) in secreting tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA).

Method: The experiment in vivo was designed for three groups: sham-operation group, focal cerebral ischemia model group, Shuxuetong injection-treated group. The gene expression and the activity of tPA on brains were detected by RT-PCR and chromogenic substrate analysis respectively after treatment for five days; The experiment in vitro: The cultured BMEC were divided into experimental group and control group.

Objective: The Chinese Journal of Hepatology is a key journal in the research field of liver diseases in China. Ranked by the impact factor, which was issued and used by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China, it is in fourth position among medical journals in China. In order to evaluate the journal, some facts about it were surveyed, including the number of pages, the number of papers in each issue, organizations of the authors, funding for their works, the impact factor, immediacy index, statuses of the articles' references, and a listing of their being cited.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to enhance the delivery of the VEGF gene to the hearts of rats using a method called ultrasound-mediated microbubble destruction (UMMD).
  • Fifteen male Wistar rats were divided into three groups after a heart procedure, with two groups receiving injections of VEGF gene via microbubbles, either with or without ultrasound assistance.
  • Results showed that the rats treated with UMMD had significantly increased levels of VEGF protein and new blood vessel formation in the damaged heart area compared to those who did not receive this treatment.

Objective: To improve the diagnosis and treatment level of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in the patients with advanced liver disease, get better curative effect and prognosis.

Methods: Registered the body temperature, symptoms and signs in the abdomen, and blood routine test, the polymorphonuclear (PMN) cell count, and ascites culture in the patients with cirrhosis and fulminant hepatitis. These patients were given supporting therapies including use plasma and albumin as well as antibiotics treatment according to drug sensitivity or empiric.

Background: To investigate the ability of alveolar macrophage (AM) and peripheral blood monocyte (PBMC) from lung cancer patients to produce Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and to evaluate the local and general cellular immune state of lung cancer patients.

Methods: AM and PBMC were obtained from 57 patients with lung cancer, 33 patients with benign pulmonary diseases and 12 healthy volunteers. IL-10 in the culture supernatants was measured quantitatively by ELISA.

Aim: To construct a recombinant adenoviral vector carrying AFP promoter and EGFP gene for specific expression of EGFP gene in AFP producing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) HepG2 cells.

Methods: Based on the Adeno-X expression system, the human immediate early cytomegalovirus promoter (PCMV IE) was removed from the plasmid, pshuttle, and replaced by a 0.3 kb alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) promoter that was synthesized by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
