Pseudomembranes in rectal prolapse: a report of two cases.

Pseudomembranes in colonic biopsies are normally associated with antibiotic related pseudomembranous colitis. Although pseudomembranes have rarely been reported in other conditions, their presence in rectal prolapse has not been previously reported.

Melanosis coli in hyperplastic polyps and adenomas.

Melanosis coli is a well-known occurrence in colonic biopsies. The condition is, however, reportedly absent in both neoplastic and hyperplastic colonic polyps. Herein, we describe its occurrence in 10 hyperplastic colonic polyps, some of which showed melanosis in adjacent biopsied mucosa, and 2 colonic adenomata.

Five year survival analysis of an oxidised zirconium total knee arthroplasty.

Background: Zirconium total knee arthroplasties theoretically have a low incidence of failure as they are low friction, hard wearing and hypoallergenic. We report the five year survival of 213 Profix zirconium total knee arthroplasties with a conforming all polyethylene tibial component.

Methods: Data was collected prospectively and multiple strict end points were used.

Cutaneous Mastocytosis is not an uncommon condition in the pediatric setting. The eruption can have multiple clinical presentations. We present a case of a 3-month-old child with a solitary mastocytoma who was initially diagnosed with recurrent bullous impetigo.

Physical and radiographic identification of the bones of the wrist by junior doctors.

Accurate clinical and radiographic examination of a wrist is required to diagnose injury. Knowledge of basic wrist anatomy is the key to ensuring a complete assessment. We tested junior doctors' basic knowledge of the bony anatomy of the wrist.

Psychological aspects of cytogenetic testing of uveal melanoma: preliminary findings and directions for future research.

Purpose: To determine the proportion of uveal melanoma patients who accept cytogenetic prognostication and to understand the reasons for their decision and the psychological impact of an adverse prognosis.

Methods: Patients treated by enucleation or local resection for uveal melanoma between 01 January 2003 and 31 December 2006 were identified and the proportion undergoing cytogenetic studies was determined. In-depth interviews of fourteen patients living near our centre were conducted to determine their reasons for accepting cytogenetic testing and their reactions to any results received.

Pressure-relieving equipment: promoting its correct use amongst nurses via differing modes of educational delivery.

Aims And Objectives: To examine the impact of written and verbal education on bed-making practices, in an attempt to reduce the prevalence of pressure ulcers.

Background: The Department of Health has set targets for a 5% reduction per annum in the incidence of pressure ulcers. Electric profiling beds with a visco-elastic polymer mattress are a new innovation in pressure ulcer prevention; however, mattress efficacy is reduced by tightly tucking sheets around the mattress.
