The discovery of functional human BAT has opened new opportunities to understand its physiological role in energy balance and therapeutic applications for metabolic disorders. The rich information of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) comes from the complex inelastic scattering process whereby fast electrons transfer energy and momentum to atoms, exciting bound electrons from their ground states to higher unoccupied states. To quantify EELS, the common practice is to compare the cross-sections integrated within an energy window or fit the observed spectrum with theoretical differential cross-sections calculated from a generalized oscillator strength (GOS) database with experimental parameters. The previous Hartree-Fock-based and DFT-based GOS are calculated from Schrödinger's solution of atomic orbitals, which does not include the full relativistic effects.

Here, we determine the ribonucleoprotein (RNP) composition of the prototypical arthropod-borne Sindbis virus (SINV). Introduction: Protein homeostasis is maintained by the opposing action of ubiquitin ligase and deubiquitinase, two important components of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, and contributes to both normal physiological and pathophysiological processes. The current study aims to delineate the roles of ubiquitin-specific protease 15 (USP15), a member of the largest deubiquitinase family, in HIV-1 gene expression and replication.

Methods: We took advantage of highly selective and specific ubiquitin variants (UbV), which were recently designed and developed for USP15, and ascertained the inhibitory effects of USP15 on HIV-1 gene expression and production by transfection and Western blotting.

Sulphite oxidase has an essential role in detoxifying environmental and endogenously generated sulphite into sulphate and requires the molybdenum cofactor (Moco) to function. Until recently it was believed that the synthesis pathway for Moco was so important for survival that it was conserved in all multicellular animals. Here we report the use of comparative genomics to identify the absence of the first enzyme involved in Moco synthesis in Haemonchus contortus, a highly pathogenic and economically important helminth of livestock that, similar to many parasitic nematode species, has proved difficult to maintain in vitro.
