Injectable hydrogels: An emerging therapeutic strategy for cartilage regeneration.

The impairment of articular cartilage due to traumatic incidents or osteoarthritis has posed significant challenges for healthcare practitioners, researchers, and individuals suffering from these conditions. Due to the absence of an approved treatment strategy for the complete restoration of cartilage defects to their native state, the tissue condition often deteriorates over time, leading to osteoarthritic (OA). However, recent advancements in the field of regenerative medicine have unveiled promising prospects through the utilization of injectable hydrogels.

A 2021 consensus statement on osteotomies around the knee by the UK Knee Osteotomy consensus Group (KOG).

Background: There are significant deficiencies in the evidence base of modern-day osteotomy which result in significant variation in practice between surgeons. The purpose of this statement was to develop a consensus statement on the practice of osteotomy so that a more standardized approach to the indications, surgical technique, and postoperative care could be outlined. The article is also intended to educate and inform the practice of individuals who are early in their experience and/or clinical practice.

The UK Foot and Ankle COVID-19 National (FAlCoN) audit.

Aims: The primary objective was to determine the incidence of COVID-19 infection and 30-day mortality in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery during the global pandemic. Secondary objectives were to determine if there was a change in infection and complication profile with changes introduced in practice.

Methods: This UK-based multicentre retrospective national audit studied foot and ankle patients who underwent surgery between 13 January and 31 July 2020, examining time periods pre-UK national lockdown, during lockdown (23 March to 11 May 2020), and post-lockdown.

Missed Lisfranc injuries-surgical vs conservative treatment.

Introduction: Lisfranc injuries form a distinct group of rare but severe injury. Literature suggests a low incidence, but failure to diagnose these injuries early and its subsequent delay in management will affect the patient's mobility and quality of life significantly. The preferred mode of management is said to be surgical.

External rotation bracing for first-time anterior dislocation of the shoulder: A discontinued randomised controlled trial comparing external rotation bracing with conventional sling.

Introduction: Itoi et al. introduced the concept of bracing in abduction and external rotation to treat traumatic anterior shoulder dislocations. However, controversy remains as studies have reported variable results.

The diagnostic value of the stump impingement reflex sign for determining anterior cruciate ligament stump impingement as a cause of knee locking.

Background: The stump impingement reflex is a subtle bounce to the knee thought to be caused by hamstring contraction when the knee is brought into extension and the torn ACL stump impinges between the distal femur and the tibial plateau. We have studied the diagnostic value of this sign.

Findings: From Feb 2008-Feb 2009, we audited 30 patients who underwent urgent arthroscopy for acutely locked knees.

The effect of preoperative symptom severity on functional outcome of total knee replacement--patients with the lowest preoperative scores achieve the lowest marks.

To determine if the functional outcome of total knee replacement (TKR) was affected by the level of preoperative symptom severity, the association between preoperative Oxford Knee Scores (OKS), and 2 year OKS, American Knee Society clinical and function scores (AKSS) was assessed. Data were prospectively collected on 45 cases who had single joint osteoarthritis and no other comorbidities. We have specifically focused on patients with single knee involvement to remove the effect of multiple joint involvement and comorbidities on the OKS.
