Curcumin is a natural compound that is considered safe and may have potential health benefits; however, its poor stability and water insolubility limit its therapeutic applications. Different strategies aim to increase its water solubility. Here, we tested the compound PVP-curcumin as a photosensitizer for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as well as its potential to act as an adjuvant in antibiotic drug therapy.

The Songnen grassland is an important resource for livestock production in China. Due to the intensification of anthropogenic activities in recent years, vegetation degradation has worsened, and the salinization of grassland has become increasingly serious, which severely affects the sustainable development of grassland animal husbandry. In this study, organic fertilizer addition was carried out at saline-and-alkaline-degraded Songnen grassland sites with photovoltaic panels, and we investigated the effects of organic fertilizer treatments on the vegetation and soil bacteria in these areas.

Background: Age-related mandibular osteoporosis frequently causes loose teeth, difficulty eating, and disfiguration in elders. Bmi1 mice displaying accelerated skeletal aging represent a useful model for testing interventions against premature jaw bone loss. As an anti-aging agent, metformin may ameliorate molecular dysfunction driving osteoporosis pathogenesis.

A 64-year-old woman with a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage, breast cancer, cervical spine tumor, and syringomyelia developed recurrent pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade after receiving the third dose of coronavirus disease 2019 mRNA vaccine, mRNA-1273 (Spikevax, Moderna). The cardiac tamponade of unknown etiology was intractable with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, colchicine, and prednisolone. She underwent thoracoscopic pericardiectomy, and microthrombi were detected in the pericardial tissue.

CaTPS2 and CaTPS3 were significantly expressed in flowers of Curcuma alismatifolia 'Shadow' and demonstrated bifunctional enzyme activity, CaTPS2 generated linalool and nerolidol as products, and CaTPS3 catalyzed β-myrcene and β-farnesene formation. This study presents the discovery and functional characterization of floral terpene synthase (TPS) genes in Curcuma alismatifolia 'Shadow', a cultivar renowned for its unique fragrance. Addressing the gap in understanding the genetic basis of floral scent in this species, we identified eight TPS genes through comprehensive transcriptome sequencing.

Facial features are important sources of information about perceived trustworthiness. Masks and protective clothing diminish the visibility of facial cues by either partially concealing the mouth and nose or covering the entire face. During the pandemic, the use of personal protective equipment affected and redefined who trusts whom in society.

Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common childhood physical disability, imposing substantial costs on individuals and society. Early interventions that promote brain optimization and reorganization are vital for children with CP. Integrating early evidence-based practice (EBP) remains challenging but enhances functional outcomes.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive malignancy. Psychological distress and elevated CXCL1 level have been reported to be closely associated with the poor prognosis and quality of life of patients with TNBC. In preclinical studies using xenograft mouse models, XIAOPI formula, a nationally approved drug prescribed to patients at high risk for breast cancer, inhibited CXCL1 expression and improved survival.

Two distinct pathways of genetic intergenerational transmission are distinguished: direct genetic transmission when parental genetic variants are passed to the child's genome and genetic nurture when the parental genetic background contributes to the child's outcomes through rearing environment. This study assessed genetic contributions to hyperactivity and inattention in childhood through these transmission pathways.

Hexavalent chromium is a common pollutant in the environment. Long-term exposure to hexavalent chromium can cause damage to multiple organs. The kidney is one of the main organs that metabolizes heavy metal toxicity, and the accumulation of Cr (VI) in the body can lead to serious damage to kidney function.

This work proposes an approach to the formation of receptor elements for the rapid diagnosis of the state of surface waters according to two indicators: the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) index and toxicity. Associations among microorganisms based on the bacteria and yeast , as well as associations of the yeasts and , were formed to evaluate these indicators, respectively. The use of nanocomposite electrically conductive materials based on carbon nanotubes, biocompatible natural polymers-chitosan and bovine serum albumin cross-linked with ferrocenecarboxaldehyde, neutral red, safranin, and phenosafranin-has made it possible to expand the analytical capabilities of receptor systems.

Once-weekly semaglutide is a widely used glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D). In clinical trials, semaglutide improved glycemic control and obesity, and reduced major cardiovascular events. However, the reports are limited on its real-world efficacy relating to various metabolic factors such as dyslipidemia or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in Asian patients with T2D.

When playing basketball, players are required to have high explosive power, which requires the ability to move in efficient, specific, and game-specific movement patterns that combine both horizontal and vertical abilities. Differences have been seen between young male and female basketball players in this measure. The aim of this study was to examine differences in players' unique movements by gender, age, and playing positions using a novel test for basketball players.

Limited substrate availability because of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) has made the brain develop specific molecular mechanisms to survive, using lactate synthesized by astrocytes as a source of energy in neurons. To understand if lactate improves cellular viability and susceptibility to glutamate toxicity, primary cortical cells were incubated in glucose- or lactate-containing media and toxic concentrations of glutamate for 24 h. Cell death was determined by immunostaining and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release.

Age-related intervertebral disk degeneration (IVDD) involves increased oxidative damage, cellular senescence, and matrix degradation. Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a water-soluble vitamin-like compound with strong anti-oxidant capacity. The goal of this study was to determine whether PQQ can prevent aging-related IVDD, and the underlying mechanism.

SARS-CoV-2 has triggered an international outbreak of the highly contagious acute respiratory disease known as COVID-19. Identifying key targets in the virus infection lifecycle is crucial for developing effective prevention and therapeutic strategies against it. Furin is a serine endoprotease that belongs to the family of proprotein convertases and plays a critical role in the entry of host cells by SARS-CoV-2.

Skin aging is the result of two types of aging, "intrinsic aging" an inevitable consequence of physiologic and genetically determined changes and "extrinsic aging," which is dependent on external factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking, and dietary habits. UVB causes skin injury through the generation of free radicals and other oxidative byproducts, also contributing to DNA damage. Appearance and accumulation of senescent cells in the skin are considered one of the hallmarks of aging in this tissue.

Aim: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is one of the most prevalent liver diseases and is characterized by steatosis and the accumulation of bioactive lipids. This study aims to understand the specific lipid species responsible for the progression of liver fibrosis in MASH.
Methods: Changes in bioactive lipid levels were examined in the livers of MASH mice fed a choline-deficient diet (CDD).
