Scaleless carp (Gymnocypris przewalskii) show special adaptations to survive in low oxygen environments, but how they manage this is not fully understood.
A study created a hypoxic stress model for these fish to examine their gill responses, including oxidative stress and cellular changes after experiencing low oxygen levels.
Results revealed changes in gill structure, increased apoptosis in cells, and a rise in antioxidant enzyme activity, highlighting how these carp adapt and cope with hypoxic conditions.
