Atrial fibrillation (AF), a cardiac arrhythmia, exhibits a heightened prevalence among individuals diagnosed with cancer, notably prominent in cases of lung and gastrointestinal malignancies. Robust evidence from extensive studies underscores this association, emphasizing its clinical significance. However, the precise mechanistic underpinnings and specific risk factors linking cancer and AF remain a subject of incomplete understanding.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate classification of variants' pathogenicity is essential for both research and clinical applications, showing significant connections between rare variants and specific health traits in three monogenic diseases.* -
  • Analysis of data from three large studies reveals that effect sizes linked to these health traits can effectively differentiate between pathogenic and non-pathogenic variants, with strong statistical significance (P < 0.001).* -
  • The research suggests that using these quantitative endophenotypes can identify up to 35% of rare variants of uncertain significance as potentially pathogenic, thereby enhancing our understanding of disease susceptibility.*

Elevated potassium levels can be a life-threatening emergency. We describe a case of falsely elevated serum potassium level in a patient with leukemia, which was suspected to be falsely elevated because the patient was asymptomatic with a normal electrocardiogram (EKG). Common reasons behind such a discrepancy in leukemia patients are the use of a tourniquet before collection, use of vacuum/pneumatic tubes for transportation, prolonged periods of incubation, use of heparin for sample collection, and processing of samples via centrifugation.

Article Synopsis
  • Infertility may increase the risk of developing heart failure (HF), particularly heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), in postmenopausal women.
  • A study followed 38,528 women, finding that 14% reported infertility, and over 15 years, 2,373 developed HF, with a notable link between infertility and HFpEF.
  • The connection remained significant even after accounting for other cardiovascular risk factors, which suggests further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms of this association.

Hormone therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis management.

Climacteric

February 2022

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, UCSF, San Francisco, CA, USA.

Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) has been used for prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis for several decades. However, public concerns were raised over the safety of MHT after the initial report was published in 2002 by the Women's Health Initiative. We conducted a historical review on this subject, primarily focusing on level I evidence from randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and summarized high-quality evidence on the efficacy and safety of MHT in management of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Objective: To assess the safety and serum estradiol (E2) and total testosterone (T) concentrations in postmenopausal women treated with Pellet Hormonal Therapy (PHT) and Food and Drug Administration approved Hormonal Therapy (FHT).

Methods: A total of 539 postmenopausal women were identified, including 384 on PHT and 155 on FHT. Data extracted from medical records include demographics, indication for hormone therapy, treatment duration, side effects, serum E2 and T levels, and frequency of laboratory follow-up.

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to an increased risk of various cardiac arrhythmias and has a notable association with sudden cardiac arrest, especially in obese patients.
  • A study analyzing data from the National Inpatient Sample revealed that patients with OSA have a significantly higher mortality rate compared to those without OSA.
  • Early screening for OSA and potential treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) could help reduce cardiovascular risks and improve outcomes for affected individuals.

A mature faith, as exemplified by David, confirmed by Jesus, and explained by Gerkin, is one that is not contingent on a preferred outcome: there is no positive or negative reciprocal altruism with God. God does not reward good behavior nor does God punish poor behavior. A mature faith is not one that expects the present to continue into the future, but one that trusts God's contingent providence in the future.
