Where is all the research software? An analysis of software in UK academic repositories.

This research examines the prevalence of research software as independent records of output within UK academic institutional repositories (IRs). There has been a steep decline in numbers of research software submissions to the UK's Research Excellence Framework from 2008 to 2021, but there has been no investigation into whether and how the official academic IRs have affected the low return rates. In what we believe to be the first such census of its kind, we queried the 182 online repositories of 157 UK universities.

The propagation and energy coupling of intense laser beams in plasmas are critical issues in inertial confinement fusion. Applying magnetic fields to such a setup has been shown to enhance fuel confinement and heating. Here we report on experimental measurements demonstrating improved transmission and increased smoothing of a high-power laser beam propagating in a magnetized underdense plasma.

Biological invasions are a major component of anthropogenic environmental change, incurring substantial economic costs across all sectors of society and ecosystems. There have been recent syntheses of costs for a number of countries using the newly compiled InvaCost database, but New Zealand-a country renowned for its approach to invasive species management-has so far not been examined. Here we analyse reported economic damage and management costs incurred by biological invasions in New Zealand from 1968 to 2020.

Biological records are often the data of choice for training predictive species distribution models (SDMs), but spatial sampling bias is pervasive in biological records data at multiple spatial scales and is thought to impair the performance of SDMs. We simulated presences and absences of virtual species as well as the process of recording these species to evaluate the effect on species distribution model prediction performance of (1) spatial bias in training data, (2) sample size (the average number of observations per species), and (3) the choice of species distribution modelling method. Our approach is novel in quantifying and applying real-world spatial sampling biases to simulated data.

The formation of surface oxides on metal surfaces is not only important in materials science, but also of significance in heterogeneous catalysis due to the fact that during most oxidation reactions the metal catalysts are inevitably oxidized, which may cause dramatic consequences in the reactions. In this work, we perform a thorough investigation on the formation of surface oxides on Pd(211) using advanced first principles calculations. A detailed mechanism of the surface oxide formation is revealed: starting from simple O chemisorption, the step sites of Pd(211) are oxidized by formation of local linear O-Pd-O oxide structures and then planar Pd-O4 structures as the O coverage is increased; the local oxide structures spread out to yield a surface oxide layer, and finally 3-dimesional oxide forms with the increase of the degree of surface oxidation.

The versatility of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) protocol provides enough grounds for its wide application over an array of microorganisms. This work was designed to evaluate DGGE for the detection and confirmation of mycobacteria and their association, if any, with waterborne pathogens. Two novel peptides belonging to the dermaseptin family, namely DRS-CA-1 and DRS-DU-1, were encoded from cDNA libraries derived from the skin secretions of and . Both natural peptides are highly-conserved and exhibited high potency against wild-type Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (MRSA and ) (MICs 4-8 µM) with no obvious hemolytic activity. Collectively these results suggest that both peptides may have potential as novel antibiotics.

Background: The unique and complex paleoclimatic and paleogeographic events which affected the Mediterranean Sea since late Miocene deeply influenced the distribution and evolution of marine organisms and shaped their genetic structure. Following the Messinian salinity crisis and the sea-level fluctuations during the Pleistocene, several Mediterranean marine species developed deep genetic differentiation, and some underwent rapid radiation. Objectives: This study explores rates of a history of childhood trauma in adult patients with bipolar disorder and depression and the impact of such trauma and parental bonding patterns on depressive mood and interpersonal functioning at the time of assessment.

Tubulin Polymerization Promoting Protein (TPPP/p25) modulates the dynamics and stability of the microtubule network by its bundling and acetylation enhancing activities that can be modulated by the binding of zinc to TPPP/p25. Its expression is essential for the differentiation of oligodendrocytes, the major constituents of the myelin sheath, and has been associated with neuronal inclusions. In this paper, evidence is provided for the expression and localization of TPPP/p25 in the zinc-rich retina and in the oligodendrocytes in the optic nerve.

Success of genetic association and the prediction of phenotypic traits from DNA are known to depend on the accuracy of phenotype characterization, amongst other parameters. To overcome limitations in the characterization of human iris pigmentation, we introduce a fully automated approach that specifies the areal proportions proposed to represent differing pigmentation types, such as pheomelanin, eumelanin, and non-pigmented areas within the iris. We demonstrate the utility of this approach using high-resolution digital eye imagery and genotype data from 12 selected SNPs from over 3000 European samples of seven populations that are part of the EUREYE study.

A new synthesis of (+)-brefeldin A is reported via Padwa allenylsulfone [3 + 2]-cycloadditive elimination. Cycloadduct 13 was initially elaborated into iodide 27, which, following treatment with Zn, gave aldehyde 28 whose C(9) stereocenter was epimerized. Further elaboration into enoate 38 and Julia-Kocienski olefination with 5 subsequently afforded 39, which was deprotected at C(1) and O(15).

A new synthetic protocol for the hydroxymethylation of terminal acetylenes is described that involves stoichiometric Carreira alkynylation with solid paraformaldehyde (HO[CH2O]nH) in PhMe at 60 °C. Significantly, the method can be successfully applied on acetylenes that possess base-sensitive ester functionality and heterocyclic rings that readily undergo metalation. While N-methylephedrine (NME) is generally the best Zn(OTf)2-coordinating ligand for promoting hydroxymethylation, TMEDA can serve as a replacement.

The original 1967 Richardson-Hough rules for predicting SN2 displacement viability in carbohydrate sulfonate derivatives with external nucleophiles have now been updated. Not only do the original rules still hold, but the newly updated rules rationalize why O-triflates (trifluoromethanesulfonate esters) frequently allow many seemingly "disallowed" pyranosidic nucleophilic substitutions to proceed. The new guidelines, which are based on three decades of experimental evidence, allow the feasibility of many pyranosidic O-triflate SN2 displacements to be gauged beforehand.
