Low temperature is a type of abiotic stress affecting the tomato () growth. Understanding the mechanisms and utilization of exogenous substances underlying plant tolerance to cold stress would lay the foundation for improving temperature resilience in this important crop. Our study is aiming to investigate the effect of exogenous glycine betaine (GB) on tomato seedlings to increase tolerance to low temperatures.

PLAC8 is a cysteine-rich protein that serves as a central mediator of tumor evolution in mammals. PLAC8 motif-containing proteins widely distribute in fungi, algae, higher plants and animals that have been described to be implicated in fruit size, cell number and the transport of heavy metals such as cadmium or zinc. In tomatoes, is a PLAC8 motif-containing gene that negatively controls fruit size by regulating cell division and expansion in the carpel ovary during fruit development.

Diurnal rhythms are known to regulate the expression of a large number of genes, coordinating plant growth and development with diel changes in light and temperature. However, the impact of RNA metabolism on rhythmic gene oscillations in plant is not yet fully understood. To address this question, we performed transcriptome and degradome profiling on tomato leaves at 6 time points during one 24 h cycle, using RNA-seq and genome-wide mapping of uncapped and cleavage transcripts (GMUCT).

To survive in adverse environmental conditions, plants have evolved sophisticated genetic and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms to balance their growth and abiotic stress tolerance. An increasing number of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including small RNAs (sRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified as essential regulators which enable plants to coordinate multiple aspects of growth and responses to environmental stresses through modulating the expression of target genes at both the transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels. In this review, we summarize recent advances in understanding ncRNAs-mediated prioritization towards plant growth or tolerance to abiotic stresses, especially to cold, heat, drought and salt stresses.

Cold stress is known to influence tomato growth, development, and yield. In this study, we analyzed the germination of tomato seeds treated with exogenous glycine betaine (GB) at a low temperature (14 °C). The results showed that cold stress inhibited tomato seed germination, and pretreatment with exogenous GB reduced this inhibition and enhanced the germination rate (GR), germination index (GI), and viability of tomato seeds at low temperatures.

Unlabelled: Bitter gourd ( L.) is a member of Cucurbitaceae family and has long been used as a source of food and medicine for its rich bioactive components or secondary metabolites. However, there are relatively few large-scale detection, identification, and quantitative studies on flavonoids in the pericarp of bitter gourds of different colours.

Plasmodesmata (PD) are plant-specific channels connecting adjacent cells to mediate intercellular communication of molecules essential for plant development and defense. The typical PD are organized by the close apposition of the plasma membrane (PM), the desmotubule derived from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and spoke-like elements linking the two membranes. The plasmodesmal PM (PD-PM) is characterized by the formation of unique microdomains enriched with sphingolipids, sterols, and specific proteins, identified by lipidomics and proteomics.

Abiotic stress adversely inhibits the growth and development of plants, by changing the expression of multiple genes. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), as a class of non-coding RNAs, function in transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation. Yet, the involvement of circRNAs in abiotic stress response is rarely reported.

Transposable elements (TEs) constitute the most abundant portions of plant genomes and can dramatically shape host genomes during plant evolution. They also play important roles in crop domestication. However, whether TEs themselves are also selected during crop domestication has remained unknown.

The HSF (heat shock factor) gene family contains highly conserved plant-specific transcription factors that play an important role in plant high-temperature stress responses. The present study aimed to characterize the HSF transcription factor genes in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), which is an important vegetable crop worldwide and the model plant for fruit development studies. Twenty-six SlyHSF genes were identified in tomato, and the phylogenetic analysis showed the possible evolution profile of subgroups among in the plant kingdom.
