Licorice, has a long history in China where it has various uses, including as a medicine, and is often widely consumed as a food ingredient. Licorice is rich in various active components, including polysaccharides, triterpenoids, alkaloids, and nucleosides, among which licochalcone A (LicA) is an active component with multiple physiological effects. Previous studies from our research group have shown that LicA can significantly improve glucose and lipid metabolism and related complications in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mice.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a highly heterogeneous cancer. The molecular and cellular characteristics differ between the colon and rectal cancer type due to the differences in their anatomical location and pathological properties. With the advent of single-cell sequencing, it has become possible to analyze inter- and intra-tumoral tissue heterogeneities.

Comparison between a dedicated stent positioning system and conventional stenting of aorto-ostial lesions: a prospective, multi-center, randomized controlled study.

Background: The accurate placement of stents for treatment of coronary aorto-ostial lesions (AOLs) is technically challenging. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a stent positioning system with a dedicated nitinol device and compare them with those of the conventional approach for stenting of coronary AOLs.

Methods: In this prospective, multi-center, open-label, randomized study, conducted from November 2015 to April 2019, patients with coronary AOLs that underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were randomly allocated (allocation ratio 1:1) using block randomization method to either a stent positioning system group or a conventional technique group.

A new predictor of coronary artery disease in acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack patients: pericarotid fat density.

Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the incremental predictive value of pericarotid fat density (PFD) on head and neck computed tomography angiography (CTA) for the obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) (≥ 50% stenosis) relative to a clinical risk model (Framingham risk score (FRS)) and the degree of carotid artery stenosis and plaque type in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients without a known history of CAD.

Methods: In a cohort of 134 consecutive stable patients diagnosed with AIS or TIA undergoing head and neck CTA between January 2010 and December 2021, pericarotid adipose tissue density (PFD) was quantified using a dedicated software. We collected demographic and clinical data, assessed the risk of CAD using the FRS, and analyzed coronary and carotid artery CTA images.

Status of diagnosis and preventative treatment for primary headache disorders: real-world data of unmet needs in China.

Background: Headache disorders are widely prevalent and pose a considerable economic burden on individuals and society. Globally, misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment of primary headache disorders remain significant challenges, impeding the effective management of such conditions. Despite advancements in headache management over the last decade, a need for comprehensive evaluations of the status of primary headache disorders in China regarding diagnosis and preventative treatments persists.

Background: Evidence suggests that patients suffering from angina with no obstructive coronary artery disease (ANOCA) experience coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). We aimed to understand the diagnosis value of noninvasive myocardial work indices (MWIs) with left ventricular pressure-strain loop (LV PSL) by echocardiography in ANOCA patients with CMD.

Methods: 97 patients with ANOCA were recruited.

Relationship between compression time and long-term hypoesthesia in primary trigeminal neuralgia treated with percutaneous balloon compression.

Percutaneous balloon compression is a surgical method for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, but one of the surgical parameters, compression time, is inconclusive. To investigate the effect of compression time during balloon compression on long-term postoperative hypoesthesia in patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia and to provide guidance on relevant parameters for balloon compression in the treatment of primary trigeminal neuralgia, we conducted a nested case-control study. Patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia treated by balloon compression from March 2013 to September 2013 were divided into case group and control group according to whether there were still symptoms of hypoesthesia at present.

Effect of Mavacamten on Chinese Patients With Symptomatic Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: The EXPLORER-CN Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Mavacamten has shown clinical benefits in global studies for patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (oHCM), but evidence in the Asian population is lacking.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of mavacamten compared with placebo for Chinese patients with symptomatic oHCM.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted at 12 hospitals in China.

The global incidence and disability of eye injury: an analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

Background: The aim of the present study was to estimate the incidence, years lived with disability (YLDs), and cause of eye injury at global, regional, and national levels by age and sex based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019.

Methods: This is a retrospective demographic analysis based on aggregated data. GBD 2019 included the burden of eye injury worldwide and its temporal and spatial characteristics in the past three decades.

Deep medullary veins as an important imaging indicator of poor prognosis in acute ischemic stroke: a retrospective cohort survey.

Background: The deep medullary veins (DMVs), which constitute a component of the intracerebral venous circulation system and are part of intracerebral reperfusion mechanisms, have been suggested as a novel imaging marker for cerebral white matter hypersignal and cerebral small vessel disease based on their discontinuous and reduced visual representation. However, the correlation between the number and continuity of visible DMVs and the poor prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains undefined. Magnetic susceptibility-weighted imaging was applied in this study to assess the distribution and structural characteristics of DMVs in patients with AIS and to investigate its relationship with the poor prognosis of those with AIS.

Aims: Mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE) is a simple and reliable index for evaluating left ventricular (LV) systolic function, particularly in patients with poor image quality; however, the lack of reference values limits its widespread use. This study aimed to establish the normal ranges for MAPSE measured using motion-mode (M-mode) and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) and to explore its principal determinants.

The effect of music intervention on sedation in elderly patients undergoing transurethral resection of prostate under spinal anesthesia: a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial.

Purpose: Music intervention is commonly used as a non-pharmacologic therapeutic modality to alleviate anxiety in perioperative patients. This study aimed to assess the sedative and anxiolytic effects of music on elderly patients receiving transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) under spinal anesthesia.

Methods: This was a prospective randomized controlled trial on patients who aged over 60 and received TURP under spinal anesthesia.

Introduction: This study was designed to investigate the effect of running exercise on improving bone health in aging mice and explore the role of the SIRT1 in regulating autophagy and osteogenic differentiation of Bone marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMSCs).

Methods: Twelve-month-old male C57BL/6J mice were used in this study as the aging model and were assigned to treadmill running exercise for eight weeks. Non-exercise male C57BL/6J mice of the same old were used as aging control and five-month-old mice were used as young controls.

Neuroprotective Effects of Activin A against Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Mice by Enhancing Nrf2 Expression to Attenuate Neuronal Ferroptosis.

Activin A (Act A) is a member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily and can protect against ischemic cerebral injury. Ferroptosis, a newly discovered type of programmed cell death, contributes to the pathogenesis of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). Background: Uterine Cervical Carcinoma (UCC) is the most prevalent gynecological malignancy globally, with a rising incidence in recent years. Accumulating evidence indicates that specific viral infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), and human herpesvirus (HHV), may contribute to UCC development and progression. Understanding the complex interplay between viral infections and UCC risk is crucial for developing novel preventative and therapeutic interventions.

Obese patients are highly sensitive to adriamycin (ADR)-induced cardiotoxicity. However, the potential mechanism of superimposed toxicity remains to be elucidated. Sestrin 2 (SESN2), a potential antioxidant, could attenuate stress-induced cardiomyopathy; therefore, this study aims to explore whether SESN2 enhances cardiac resistance to ADR-induced oxidative damage in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice.

Background: Although headache disorders are common, the current diagnostic approach is unsatisfactory. Previously, we designed a guideline-based clinical decision support system (CDSS 1.0) for diagnosing headache disorders.

Surface acoustic wave manipulation of bioparticles.

The introduction of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) into lab-on-a-chip microfluidic systems has contributed to the development of a new cutting-edge technology-SAW-based micro/nano manipulation. Recently, the SAW technology has emerged as an important tool for manipulating micro/nano particles/cell populations by virtue of its simplicity, biocompatibility, non-invasiveness, scalability, and versatility. In custom-designed acoustic fields, this technology can be used to manipulate cells, bacteria, exosomes, and even worms precisely, and it has been used in applications such as biomedical and point-of-care diagnostic systems.

The Accurate Interpretation and Clinical Significance of Morphological Features of Fine Needle Aspiration Cells in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland; fine needle aspiration cytology is the most basic and reliable diagnostic method before PTC operation. However, it is not clear which cell morphological changes can be used as a reliable standard for the diagnosis of PTC. A retrospective analysis was performed on 337 patients with PTC confirmed by postoperative histology.
