Aberrant Hippocampal Development in Early-onset Mental Disorders and Promising Interventions: Evidence from a Translational Study.

Neurosci Bull

June 2024

Early Intervention Unit, Department of Psychiatry, Affiliated Nanjing Brain Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, 210029, China.

Early-onset mental disorders are associated with disrupted neurodevelopmental processes during adolescence. The methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) animal model, in which disruption in neurodevelopmental processes is induced, mimics the abnormal neurodevelopment associated with early-onset mental disorders from an etiological perspective. We conducted longitudinal structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in MAM rats to identify specific brain regions and critical windows for intervention.

The bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis mouse model is commonly used in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis research, but its cellular and molecular changes and efficiency as a model at the molecular level are not fully understood. In this study, we used spatial transcriptome technology to investigate the cellular and molecular changes in the lungs of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis mouse models. Our analyses revealed cell dynamics during fibrosis in epithelial cells, mesenchymal cells, immunocytes, and erythrocytes with their spatial distribution available.

The data input process for most chest pain centers is not intelligent, requiring a lot of staff to manually input patient information. This leads to problems such as long processing times, high potential for errors, an inability to access patient data in a timely manner and an increasing workload. To address the challenge, an Internet of Things (IoT)-driven chest pain center is designed, which crosses the sensing layer, network layer and application layer.

Osteoporosis is a common bone disease, characterized by a descent in bone mass due to the dysregulation of bone homeostasis. Although different studies have identified an association between osteoporosis and epigenetic alterations in osteogenic genes, the mechanisms of osteoporosis remain unclear. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is a methylated adenosine nucleotide, which regulates the translocation, exporting, translation, and decay of RNA.

In vitro and in vivo killing effects of methionine enkephalin on osteosarcoma.

Int Immunopharmacol

December 2023

Department of Immunology, College of Basic Medical Science, China Medical University, Shenyang, Liaoning Province 110122, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how methionine enkephalin (MENK) affects osteosarcoma, focusing on its impact on cancer cell behavior and immune response.
  • MENK was found to significantly inhibit the growth and spread of osteosarcoma cells (MG-63 and Saos-2), alter cell cycle progression, and adjust the expression levels of key apoptosis-related proteins.
  • Additionally, MENK treatment led to a reduction in tumor size and weight, modified the immune cell composition within tumors, and enhanced the body’s anti-tumor response by increasing inflammatory cytokines while decreasing immunosuppressive signals.

Purpose: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine disorder, which is closely associated with insulin resistance, glucose and lipid metabolism disorders. Patients with PCOS have a significantly higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and are associated with hyperandrogenemia (HA). However, the exact mechanism by which HA exacerbates hepatic steatosis in PCOS has not yet been fully elucidated.

Background: Peroxisome proliferator activating receptors (PPARs) are important regulators of nuclear hormone receptor function, and they play a key role in biological processes such as lipid metabolism, inflammation and cell proliferation. However, their role in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) is unclear.

Methods: We used multiple datasets, including TCGA-HNSC, GSE41613, GSE139324, PRJEB23709 and IMVigor, to perform a comprehensive analysis of PPAR-related genes in HNSC.

Background: Physical exercise is the first-line intervention for prediabetes, and metformin is the most widely used oral insulin-sensitizing agent. Moreover, intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) directly affects insulin resistance by helping maintain glucose homeostasis. Here, we evaluated the effects of moderate aerobic exercise and/or metformin on histological IMAT parameters in non-streptozotocin-induced prediabetes.

Over the past decade, researchers have proposed a new class of drug delivery systems, bio-hybrid micro-robots, designed with a variety of living cell-driven micro-robots that utilize the unique mobility of natural organisms (bacteria, cells, exosomes, .) to transport effective drugs. Microalgae are considered potential drug delivery carriers.

Background: In this study, we aimed to clarify the role and mechanism by which Cathepsin D (CTSD) mediates the advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-induced proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs).

Methods: We conducted a Western blotting assay and co-immunoprecipitation assay to detect the expression of target proteins and the interaction between different proteins. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and 5- ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) were used to evaluate the proliferation.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a potential treatment strategy for melanoma. As a second-generation photosensitizer, Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) has many advantages for anti-tumor PDTs, such as strong absorption in the red and near infrared regions, high photo and chemical stability, etc. However, ZnPc has a poor water solubility and is apt to aggregate due to the π-π interaction between molecules, which limits its applications.

Anticancer treatment regimens are effective but may lead to cardiac dysfunction. The meaning of this statement is that myocardial strain can be a good indicator of cancer treatment-related cardiac dysfunction. We used Bayesian network meta-analysis to compare and rank these regimens to comprehensively evaluate their influence on the heart.

Glutamate plays a crucial role in cognitive impairments after ischemic stroke. There is a scarcity of information about how glutamate-induced activation of cAMP-response element binding (CREB) signaling pathway regulates both the negative and positive regulators of synaptic plasticity. Recent studies have demonstrated the involvement of prominent epigenetic repressors, such as MeCP2 and DNMTs, in stroke.

Background: Retrograde guidewire (GW) tracking success via a poor septal collateral channel (CC) when an antegrade approach fails is crucial for successful revascularization of coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO) with poor septal CC. However, the incidence, predictors, and management strategies for retrograde GW tracking failure via poor septal CC remain unclear.

Methods: In total, 122 CTO patients who underwent retrograde septal percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with poor CC between January 2017 and May 2022 were retrospectively analyzed.

Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are a unique type of lymphocyte that differ from adaptive lymphocytes in that they lack antigen receptors, which primarily reside in tissues and are closely associated with fibers. Despite their plasticity and heterogeneity, identifying ILCs in peripheral blood can be difficult due to their small numbers. Accurately and rapidly identifying ILCs is critical for studying homeostasis and inflammation.
