Interpretable multi-modal artificial intelligence model for predicting gastric cancer response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Cell Rep Med

December 2024

Department of Surgical Oncology and General Surgery, The First Hospital of China Medical University, Key Laboratory of Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Tumors (China Medical University), Ministry of Education, Shenyang 110001, China. Electronic address:

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy assessment is imperative for prognostication and clinical management of locally advanced gastric cancer. We propose an incremental supervised contrastive learning model (iSCLM), an interpretable artificial intelligence framework integrating pretreatment CT scans and H&E-stained biopsy images, for improved decision-making regarding neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We have constructed and tested iSCLM using retrospective data from 2,387 patients across 10 medical centers and evaluated its discriminative ability in a prospective cohort (132 patients; ChiCTR2300068917).

Background: In clinical practice, intravascular hemolysis is not common after interventional cardiovascular procedures. Although diagnostic and treatment techniques have developed, with the increasing importance placed on people's own health and the popularity of cardiovascular intervention, there have been occasional reports of hemolysis after different cardiovascular interventions, mainly including cardiac pacemaker implantation, atrial-fibrillation radiofrequency ablation, transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI), transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) and percutaneous repair of Gerbode defect and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with Impella. However, so far, there have been no relevant reports on postoperative hemolysis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Obesity is a prominent feature of Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), which represents a major and growing public health problem. More than half of BBS patients carry mutations in one of eight genes that encode subunits of a protein complex known as the BBSome, which has emerged as a key regulator of energy and glucose homeostasis. However, the mechanisms underlying obesity in BBS are complex.

Hippo pathway is an evolutionarily conservative key pathway that regulates organ size and tissue regeneration by regulating cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP)/ WW domain-containing transcription regulator 1 (TAZ) serves as a pivotal transcription factor within the Hippo signaling pathway, which undergoes negative regulation by the Hippo pathway. The expression of YAP/TAZ affects various biological processes, including differentiation of osteoblasts (OB) and osteoclasts (OC), cartilage homeostasis, skeletal muscle development, regeneration and quality maintenance.

Zhejiang Nari Suzhi Health Technology Co, Ltd., Hangzhou 310053, China.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions involving the heart or blood vessels and is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Carotid artery plaque, as a key risk factor, is crucial for the early prevention and management of CVD. The purpose of this study is to combine clinical application and deep learning techniques to design a predictive model for the carotid artery plaque area.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common type of malignant bone tumor, and understanding its mechanisms is crucial for finding new treatment options, particularly the role of fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) protein in OS.
  • Research methods included analyzing FTO levels in tumors, manipulating FTO expression in OS cell lines, and studying its effects on cell growth and movement, along with the role of the microRNA miR-150-5p.
  • The findings revealed that FTO is overexpressed in OS tissues, correlating with poor survival rates, while miR-150-5p is downregulated and can inhibit FTO expression, suggesting that the balance between these two could influence OS progression.

Article Synopsis
  • - Endometriosis (EMs) is a common, estrogen-dependent condition characterized by endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus, which can behave like cancer despite being benign.
  • - Endometriosis-associated ovarian carcinoma (EAOC) is a serious complication arising from EMs, but its causes are not fully understood, and there are no reliable early diagnostic biomarkers or tailored treatments available.
  • - Research suggests that EAOC development involves a mix of genetic mutations, immune responses, oxidative stress, and epigenetic factors, highlighting the complexity of its pathogenesis and the need for further study.

Mitochondria play a crucial role in numerous biological processes; however, limited methods and research have focused on revealing mitochondrial heterogeneity at the single-cell level. In this study, we optimized the DNBelab C4 single-cell ATAC (assay for transposase-accessible chromatin) sequencing workflow for single-cell mitochondrial sequencing (C4_mtscATAC-seq). We validated the effectiveness of our C4_mtscATAC-seq protocol by sequencing the HEK-293T cell line with two biological replicates, successfully capturing both mitochondrial content (~68% of total sequencing data) and open chromatin status simultaneously.

BACKGROUND Recently, the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) has been suggested as a valuable biomarker for adverse events in acute myocardial infarction. However, the prognostic value of ACR in very elderly patients (≥80 years) with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 354 very elderly patients with NSTE-ACS who underwent PCI were included in this study and followed up for 1 year.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are present in the tumor microenvironment and can polarize into subtypes with different functions and characteristics in response to different stimuli, classifying them into anti-tumorigenic M1-type and pro-tumorigenic M2-type. The M1-type macrophages inhibit tumor growth through the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, whereas the M2-type macrophages contribute to tumor progression through the promotion of tumor proliferation, angiogenesis and metastasis. Due to the duality of macrophage effects on tumors, TAMs have been a hot topic in tumor research.

Reprod Biomed Online

December 2024

Department of Gynecology, Cancer Hospital of China Medical University, Liaoning Cancer Hospital and Institute, Shenyang 110042, People's Republic of China; Key Clinical Specialty of Liaoning Province, Cancer Hospital of China Medical University, Liaoning Cancer Hospital and Institute, Shenyang 110042, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Research Question: Does LncRNA BANCR promote the malignant transformation of endometriosis by activating the miR-612/CPNE3 pathway?

Design: The expression patterns of BANCR, miR-612 and CPNE3 in normal endometrium, eutopic endometrium from endometriosis, eutopic endometrium or malignant tissues from endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer. On the basis of primary normal endometrial stromal cells (NESC) and eutopic endometrial stromal cells (EESC), the regulatory relationships between BANCR, miR-612 and CPNE3, and the potential mechanisms that promote the malignant transformation of endometriosis, were elucidated in vitro and in vivo.

Results: The expression levels of BANCR and CPNE3 were lowest in normal endometrium, significantly increased in eutopic endometrium (P < 0.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM), a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar, leads to delayed or non-healing wounds, increasing amputation risks, and placing a significant burden on patients and society. While extensive research has been conducted on adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) for promoting wound healing, there is a scarcity of studies focusing on diabetic wounds, particularly those employing proteomics and bioinformatics approaches.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms by which ADSCs promote diabetic wound healing using proteomics and bioinformatics techniques.
