Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is inflammatory arthritis predominantly affecting the spine, which is involved in the disorders of both immune and skeletal systems. The exact pathogenesis of AS is not fully understood. Osteoimmunology is a new subject of study in inflammatory arthritis, in particular the pathogenic events involved in the cross-regulation of both skeletal and immune systems.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been one of the largest health concerns of the 21st century due to the serious complications associated with the disease. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the pathogenesis of DM and develop novel strategies to reduce the burden of diabetic complications. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a nicotinamide adenosine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent deacetylase, has been reported to not only deacetylate histones to modulate chromatin function but also deacetylate numerous transcription factors to regulate the expression of target genes, both positively and negatively.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brings serious physical and psychological pain to GBM patients, whose survival rate remains not optimistic. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to participate in the progression of many cancers, including GBM. However, the mechanism and function of long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1152 (LINC01152) in GBM are still unclear.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anthracycline chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of various types of cancer. However, short-term and long-term cardiotoxicity limits the clinical application of DOX. Currently, dexrazoxane is the only approved treatment by the United States Food and Drug Administration to prevent DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) has been considered as a major cause of chronic renal failure in children and a condition which can worsen clinical outcomes in adults. At present, the molecular mechanisms of HSPN are still unclear. In this study, iTRAQ quantitative proteomic analysis was performed on renal tissues collected from patients with HSPN and compared with those of patients after nephrectomy (controls).

Prostate cancer is a highly heritable disease with large disparities in incidence rates across ancestry populations. We conducted a multiancestry meta-analysis of prostate cancer genome-wide association studies (107,247 cases and 127,006 controls) and identified 86 new genetic risk variants independently associated with prostate cancer risk, bringing the total to 269 known risk variants. The top genetic risk score (GRS) decile was associated with odds ratios that ranged from 5.

An increase in oxidative stress is an important pathological mechanism of heart injury induced by doxorubicin (DOX). Tranilast is an anti-allergy drug that has been shown to possess good antioxidant activity in previous studies. The overexpression and secretion of chymase by mast cells (MCs) increase the pathological overexpression of angiotensin II (Ang II), which plays a crucial role in myocardial hypertrophy and the deterioration of heart disease.

Fenretinide (4-HPR), a synthetic retinoid, has attracted attention for its anti-inflammation activity. However, few studies have evaluated the effects of 4-HPR on ulcerative colitis (UC). The present study was performed to investigate the therapeutic effects of 4-HPR on UC, and to explore the mechanisms mainly focused on macrophage polarization involved in this progress.

Objective: To investigate the curative effects of HUC-MSCs combined with USW on spinal cord injury (SCI) and the effects on inflammatory microenvironment and to explore the regulatory mechanisms of MK2/TTP signalling pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome.

Methods: The SCI rat model was established using the modified Allen method; rats were administered with USW, HUC-MSCs, and combination therapy of USW and HUC-MSCs; the therapeutic efficacies in each group of rats were monitored and represented in BBB score. SCI levels were observed using HE staining and IF.

Purpose: The expression and roles of most long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain poorly understood. Thus, this study investigated antisense RNA 1 (KCNMB2-AS1) expression in NSCLC and determined the roles and mechanisms of in regulating NSCLC progression.

Methods: expression in NSCLC tissues and cells was detected using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Background: The ability to treat glioblastoma (GBM) using the chemotherapeutic agent temozolomide (TMZ) has been hampered by the development of therapeutic resistance. In this study, we assessed the ability of the isoquinoline alkaloid berberine to alter GBM TMZ resistance using two different TMZ-resistant cell lines to mimic a physiologically relevant GBM experimental system.

Methods: By treating these resistant cell lines with berberine followed by TMZ, we were able to assess the chemosensitivity of these cells and their parental strains, based on their performance in the MTT and colony formation assays, as well as on the degree of detectable apoptosis that was detected in the strains.

Regulatory mechanisms of Sesn2 and its role in multi-organ diseases.

Pharmacol Res

February 2021

School of Nursing, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, 250012, China. Electronic address:

Sestrin2 (Sesn2) is a powerful anti-oxidant that can prevent acute and chronic diseases. The role of Sesn2 has been thoroughly reviewed in liver, nervous system, and immune system diseases. However, there is a limited number of reviews that have summarized the effects of Sesn2 in heart and vascular diseases, and very less literature-based information is available on involvement of Sesn2 in renal and respiratory pathologies.

The tumor microenvironment in hepatocellular carcinoma can be classified into cellular and non-cellular components. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are cellular components of this microenvironment that serve an important role in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma. Fibrinogen-like protein 2 (FGL2) has been demonstrated to promote tumor progression by regulating cellular components of the tumor microenvironment in various types of malignant tumor.

Chronic osteomyelitis causes serious injury to patients. Antibiotic delivery systems based on poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) have great potential for treatment of chronic osteomyelitis. However, PLGA has a glass-transition temperature that is higher than physiological temperatures, resulting in a lack of flexibility for implantation into the bone marrow cavity.

Background: The beneficial effect of statins on atherosclerosis and cardiovascular outcomes has been well established. The Measuring Effects on intima media Thickness: an Evaluation Of Rosuvastatin (METEOR) global study demonstrated that a 2-year orally administered treatment with rosuvastatin 40 mg daily significantly slowed the progression of carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) compared to placebo. The current METEOR-China study is designed to evaluate the effect of rosuvastatin 20 mg daily versus placebo on the progression of atherosclerosis measured by CIMT in asymptomatic Chinese subjects.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the type of cancer with the third highest incidence and is associated with high mortality and low 5-year survival rates. We observed that copanlisib, an inhibitor of PI3K (pan-class I phosphoinositide 3-kinase) that preferentially inhibits PI3Kδ and PI3Kα, impedes the growth of CRC cells by inducing apoptosis via PUMA. There was a marked increase in the expression of PUMA independent of p53 after treatment with copanlisib.

Based on their histological appearance, gliomas are a very common primary tumor type of the brain and are classified into grades, Grade I to Grade IV, of the World Health Organization. Treatment failure is due to the cancer stem cells (CSC) phenotype maintenance and self-renewal. BET degraders such as ZBC260 represents a novel class of BET inhibitors that act by inducing BET proteins degradation.
