Background: The accurate placement of stents for treatment of coronary aorto-ostial lesions (AOLs) is technically challenging. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a stent positioning system with a dedicated nitinol device and compare them with those of the conventional approach for stenting of coronary AOLs.

Methods: In this prospective, multi-center, open-label, randomized study, conducted from November 2015 to April 2019, patients with coronary AOLs that underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were randomly allocated (allocation ratio 1:1) using block randomization method to either a stent positioning system group or a conventional technique group.

Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the incremental predictive value of pericarotid fat density (PFD) on head and neck computed tomography angiography (CTA) for the obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) (≥ 50% stenosis) relative to a clinical risk model (Framingham risk score (FRS)) and the degree of carotid artery stenosis and plaque type in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients without a known history of CAD.

Methods: In a cohort of 134 consecutive stable patients diagnosed with AIS or TIA undergoing head and neck CTA between January 2010 and December 2021, pericarotid adipose tissue density (PFD) was quantified using a dedicated software. We collected demographic and clinical data, assessed the risk of CAD using the FRS, and analyzed coronary and carotid artery CTA images.

Relationship between compression time and long-term hypoesthesia in primary trigeminal neuralgia treated with percutaneous balloon compression.

Neurosurg Rev

August 2023

Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine, The First Hospital of China Medical University, No. 155 Nanjing North Street, Shenyang, Liaoning, China.

Percutaneous balloon compression is a surgical method for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, but one of the surgical parameters, compression time, is inconclusive. To investigate the effect of compression time during balloon compression on long-term postoperative hypoesthesia in patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia and to provide guidance on relevant parameters for balloon compression in the treatment of primary trigeminal neuralgia, we conducted a nested case-control study. Patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia treated by balloon compression from March 2013 to September 2013 were divided into case group and control group according to whether there were still symptoms of hypoesthesia at present.

Deep medullary veins as an important imaging indicator of poor prognosis in acute ischemic stroke: a retrospective cohort survey.

Quant Imaging Med Surg

August 2023

Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Neurointerventional Therapy and Biomaterials Research and Development, Shenyang, China.

Background: The deep medullary veins (DMVs), which constitute a component of the intracerebral venous circulation system and are part of intracerebral reperfusion mechanisms, have been suggested as a novel imaging marker for cerebral white matter hypersignal and cerebral small vessel disease based on their discontinuous and reduced visual representation. However, the correlation between the number and continuity of visible DMVs and the poor prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains undefined. Magnetic susceptibility-weighted imaging was applied in this study to assess the distribution and structural characteristics of DMVs in patients with AIS and to investigate its relationship with the poor prognosis of those with AIS.

Aims: Mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE) is a simple and reliable index for evaluating left ventricular (LV) systolic function, particularly in patients with poor image quality; however, the lack of reference values limits its widespread use. This study aimed to establish the normal ranges for MAPSE measured using motion-mode (M-mode) and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) and to explore its principal determinants.

Methods And Results: This multicentre, prospective, cross-sectional study included 1952 healthy participants [840 men (43%); age range, 18-80 years] from 55 centres.

Breast cancer is a common malignancy in women with poor prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of microRNA-944 (miR-944) mediated secreted phosphoprotein-1 (SPP1) in breast cancer progression and its regulatory effect on the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway. Differential gene analysis was performed to identify key genes associated with breast cancer development by screening breast cancer-related microarray data.

Background: Coronary angiography (CAG) is an invasive examination with high risks and costs and various complications may occur. It is necessary to find a diagnostic method, non-invasiveness, inexpensive with low risk. This study aims to analyze the correlation between the levels of serum homocysteine (Hcy), cystatin C (Cys C) and uric acid (UA) and Gensini score in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and assess their diagnostic value for CHD.

Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention for in-stent restenosis (ISR) chronic total occlusion (CTO) has been a great challenge. There are occasions when the balloon is uncrossable or undilatable (BUs) even though the guidewire has passed, leading to failure of the procedure. Few studies have focused on the incidence, predictors, and management of BUs during ISR-CTO intervention.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is a common clinical process, and the lung is one of the most sensitive organs of I/R injury, which often leads to acute lung injury (ALI). Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic activities. However, the effects of Tan IIA on lung I/R injury remain uncertain.

Background: Uterine Cervical Carcinoma (UCC) is the most prevalent gynecological malignancy globally, with a rising incidence in recent years. Accumulating evidence indicates that specific viral infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), and human herpesvirus (HHV), may contribute to UCC development and progression. Understanding the complex interplay between viral infections and UCC risk is crucial for developing novel preventative and therapeutic interventions.

Obese patients are highly sensitive to adriamycin (ADR)-induced cardiotoxicity. However, the potential mechanism of superimposed toxicity remains to be elucidated. Sestrin 2 (SESN2), a potential antioxidant, could attenuate stress-induced cardiomyopathy; therefore, this study aims to explore whether SESN2 enhances cardiac resistance to ADR-induced oxidative damage in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice.

June 2023

School of Mechanical Engineering, Shenyang Jianzhu University, Shenyang 110168, China.

The introduction of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) into lab-on-a-chip microfluidic systems has contributed to the development of a new cutting-edge technology-SAW-based micro/nano manipulation. Recently, the SAW technology has emerged as an important tool for manipulating micro/nano particles/cell populations by virtue of its simplicity, biocompatibility, non-invasiveness, scalability, and versatility. In custom-designed acoustic fields, this technology can be used to manipulate cells, bacteria, exosomes, and even worms precisely, and it has been used in applications such as biomedical and point-of-care diagnostic systems.

Circular RNAs can regulate the development and progression of ischemic cerebral disease. However, it remains unclear whether they play a role in acute ischemic stroke. To investigate the role of the circular RNA Rap1b (circRap1b) in acute ischemic stroke, in this study we established an in vitro model of acute ischemia and hypoxia by subjecting HT22 cells to oxygen and glucose deprivation and a mouse model of acute ischemia and hypoxia by occluding the right carotid artery.

The role of the majority of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the progression of nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains elusive, despite their potential value, thus warranting in-depth studies. For example, detailed functions of the lncRNA POU6F2 antisense RNA 2 (POU6F2-AS2) in NSCLC are unknown. Herein, we investigated the expression status of POU6F2-AS2 in NSCLC.
