Bidirectional associations among gallstone disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, kidney stone disease.

World J Gastroenterol

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, West China School of Public Health and West China Fourth Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, Sichuan Province, China.

Background: A body of evidence has suggested bidirectional relationships among gallstone disease (GSD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and kidney stone disease (KSD). However, the results are inconsistent, and studies on this topic in China are relatively few. Our goal is to explore the bidirectional associations among these three diseases through a multicenter study, systematic review, and meta-analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how various background factors relate to blood pressure variability (BPV) and its impact on cardiovascular death and overall mortality in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 264 patients over 36 months, calculating multiple BPV metrics based on intra-dialysis blood pressure measurements.
  • Findings identified several factors like age, BMI, and cholesterol levels as positively associated with BPV, while hemoglobin and albumin had a negative correlation; certain BPV measures were also determined to be independent risk factors for cardiovascular death.

September 2024

Department of Hematology-Oncology, Chongqing Key Laboratory of Translational Research for Cancer Metastasis and Individualized Treatment, Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, Chongqing, 400030, China.

Severe pneumonia (SP) is a prevalent respiratory ailment characterized by high mortality and poor prognosis. Current scoring systems for pneumonia are not only time-consuming but also exhibit limitations in early SP prediction. To address this gap, this study aimed to develop a machine-learning model using inflammatory markers from peripheral blood for early prediction of SP.

A Nature-Derived, Hetero-Structured, Pro-Healing Bioadhesive Patch for High-Performance Sealing of Wet Tissues.

Adv Mater

June 2024

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Oral Disease and Biomedical Sciences, Chongqing Municipal Key Laboratory of Oral Biomedical Engineering of Higher Education, Stomatological Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, 401174, P. R. China.

Tissue adhesives are promising alternatives to sutures and staples to achieve wound closure and hemostasis. However, they often do not work well on tissues that are soaked in blood or other biological fluids, and organs that are typically exposed to a variety of harsh environments such as different pH values, nonhomogeneous distortions, continuous expansions and contractions, or high pressures. In this study, a nature-derived multilayered hetero-bioadhesive patch (skin secretion of Andrias davidianus (SSAD)-Patch) based on hydrophilic/hydrophobic pro-healing bioadhesives derived from the SSAD is developed, which is designed to form pressure-triggered strong adhesion with wet tissues.

As a novel and environmentally friendly Brönsted acid, imidazole hydrochloride was used to promote the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted-4(3H)-quinazolinone from o-aminobenzoic acid and DMF derivatives. The essence of this reaction is a multicomponent reaction, which constructs multiple chemical bonds between different components through the transamidation of imidazole hydrochloride. This protocol showed a wide range of functional group tolerance, and a series of quinazolinones were synthesized in low to moderate yields without metal catalysts, oxidants or other additives.

Background: Postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a well-documented cause of morbidity and mortality in lung cancer patients. However, risk identification remains limited. In this study, we sought to analyze the risk factors for VTE and verify the predictive value of the modified Caprini risk assessment model (RAM).

This study aimed to perform a meta‑analysis comparing the efficacy and safety of gefitinib in combination with chemotherapy versus gefitinib alone in patients with advanced Non‑Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). We searched databases for clinical studies that reported the efficacy or safety of gefitinib plus chemotherapy in comparison with gefitinib alone. Raw data from included studies were extracted and pooled to calculate the Odds Ratio (OR) for Objective Response Rate (ORR) and Disease Control Rate (DCR), the Hazard Ratio (HR) for Progression-Free Survival (PFS) and Overall Survival (OS), and OR for complication ≥ Grade 3.

Objective: The NLRP3 inflammasome plays a key role in the progression and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: Macrophages (MΦs), as an important cellular component of the tumor microenvironment (TME), highly express the NLRP3 inflammasome. Rigorous investigation of the interaction and network between macrophages and colorectal cancer may help in understanding the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome in metastatic colorectal cancer.

Introduction: Patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often show abnormalities related to cognitive activities, especially related to working memory and inhibitory control. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive brain imaging technique based on the changes in cerebral hemodynamics to measure the response of brain activities to cognitive tasks.

Methods: In this review, we collected all clinical experiments that evaluated the changes of oxyhemoglobin levels in relevant brain regions of patients with ADHD through cognitive tasks by fNIRS to determine the abnormalities of brain regions related to working memory and inhibitory control activities in patients with ADHD.

Studies have reported that different brain regions/connections possess distinct frequency properties, which are related to brain function. Previous studies have proposed altered brain activity frequency and frequency-specific functional connectivity (FC) patterns in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), implying the varied dominant frequency of FC in ASD. However, the difference of the dominant frequency of FC between ASD and healthy controls (HCs) remains unclear.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) are two novel classes of hypoglycemic agents. The relative cardiovascular effectiveness between these two drug classes in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is unestablished due to the absence of large cardiovascular outcome trials directly comparing DPP-4i with GLP-1RA. We aimed to incorporate large propensity score-matched cohort studies to conduct a meta-analysis, to determine the relative effectiveness of GLP-1RA versus DPP-4i on cardiovascular endpoints in T2D patients.
