Association between serum 25- hydroxyvitamin D and albuminuiria in middle-aged and older Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes.

Objective: The objective was to analyze the relationship between serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) level and albuminuiria in middle-aged and older patients with type 2 diabetes of Gansu Province.

Methods: Data pertaining to 380 in-patients with type 2 diabetes were collected. Subjects were classified groups based on gender,age,25(OH)D,BMI and UACR.

Accurate quantification of tumor growth patterns can indicate the development process of the disease. According to the important features of tumor growth rate and expansion, physicians can intervene and diagnose patients more efficiently to improve the cure rate. However, the existing longitudinal growth model can not well analyze the dependence between tumor growth pixels in the long space-time, and fail to effectively fit the nonlinear growth law of tumors.

Evolution of gene expression signature in mammary gland stem cells from neonatal to old mice.

During the lifetime of females, mammary epithelial cells undergo cyclical expansion and proliferation depending on the cyclical activation of mammary gland stem/progenitor cells (MaSCs) in response to the change of hormone level. The structural shrink of mammary duct tree and the functional loss of mammary gland occur along with inactivation of MaSCs in old females, even leading to breast cancer occasionally. However, the gene expression signature in MaSCs across the lifespan remains unclear.

DACH1, a novel target of miR-218, participates in the regulation of cell viability, apoptosis, inflammatory response, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition process in renal tubule cells treated by high-glucose.

This report was designed to assess the functional role of miR-218/dachshund family transcription factor 1 (DACH1) in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and investigate its possible molecular mechanism. From the GEO database, we downloaded different datasets for analyzing the expression of miR-218 and DACH1 in DKD. TargetScan was adopted to predict the binding sites between miR-218 and DACH1, which was further verified by dual-luciferase reporter assays.

Prognostic value of increased integrin-beta 1 expression in solid cancers: a meta-analysis.

Integrin-beta 1 (ITGB1) is aberrantly overexpressed or downregulated in solid cancers; however, its prognostic value remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to explore whether ITGB1 expression is correlated with overall survival (OS) and the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with solid cancers. We systematically searched the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for eligible studies published up to June 1, 2017.

Impact of upper respiratory tract infections on perioperative outcomes of children undergoing therapeutic cardiac catheterisation.

Background: Recent upper respiratory tract infection (URI) is associated with increased incidence of perioperative complications in children undergoing open heart surgery. As a result, surgery is often postponed. However, the effect of recent URI on the incidence of perioperative complications in children undergoing therapeutic cardiac catheterisation is unknown.

Reporting of declarations and conflicts of interest in WHO guidelines can be further improved.

Objectives: We aimed to examine the declaration of interests (DOIs), management of conflict of interest (COI), and the funders for World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

Study Design And Setting: We examined all Guidelines Review Committee (GRC)-approved WHO guidelines published in English from January 2007 (inception of the GRC) to November 2016. We obtained a list of all such guidelines from the GRC Secretariat.

Pharmacological interventions for preventing post-operative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: a network meta-analysis protocol.

Introduction: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common complication following cardiac surgery, and randomised clinical trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have been conducted to compare and evaluate different pharmacological interventions for preventing POAF. This study aimed to explore the effect of different pharmacological interventions for prophylaxis against POAF after cardiac surgery using network meta-analysis (NMA).

Methods And Analysis: A systematic search will be performed in PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library to identify RCTs, systematic reviews, meta-analyses or NMA of different pharmacological interventions for POAF.

Treatment mechanism of matrine in combination with irinotecan for colon cancer.

The inhibitory effect of matrine (MA) was studied in combination with irinotecan (CPT-11) on proliferation of human colon carcinoma cell line HT29. We also explored the mechanism of cell apoptosis induction in HT29. HT29 cells were treated with different concentrations of MA and CPT-11 alone and in combination.

Heterogeneous dimer peptide-conjugated polylysine dendrimer-FeO composite as a novel nanoscale molecular probe for early diagnosis and therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma.

A novel nanoscale molecular probe is formulated in order to reduce toxicity and side effects of antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX) in normal tissues and to enhance the detection sensitivity during early imaging diagnosis. The mechanism involves a specific targeting of Arg-Gly-Asp peptide (RGD)-GX1 heterogeneous dimer peptide-conjugated dendrigraft poly-l-lysine (DGL)-magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) composite by αβ-integrin/vasculature endothelium receptor-mediated synergetic effect. The physicochemical properties of the nanoprobe were characterized by using transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and vibrating sample magnetometer.

Topical phenytoin for treating pressure ulcers.

Background: Pressure ulcers are common in clinical practice and pose a significant health problem worldwide. Apart from causing suffering to patients, they also result in longer hospital stays and increase the cost of health care. A variety of methods are used for treating pressure ulcers, including pressure relief, patient repositioning, biophysical strategies, nutritional supplementation, debridement, topical negative pressure, and local treatments including dressings, ointments and creams such as bacitracin, silver sulphadiazine, neomycin, and phenytoin.

Asymmetric Synthesis of CF3- and Indole-Containing Thiochromanes via a Squaramide-Catalyzed Michael-Aldol Reaction.

A Michael-aldol reaction of 2-mercaptobenzaldehyde with β-indole-β-CF3 enones catalyzed by a squaramide has been realized. The method affords a series of 2-CF3-2-indole-substituted thiochromanes featuring a CF3-containing quaternary stereocenter in excellent yields, diastereoselectivities, and enantioselectivities.

[Effect of dust aerosol exposure on lung function and lung histopathology in rats].

Objective: To investigate the effect of dust aerosol exposure on lung function and lung histopathology in rats.

Methods: According to random number table method, 120 Wistar male rats were divided into untreated control group, treated control group and experimental group, with 40 rats in each group. Experimental group were exposed to the wind tunnel simulation of sandstorm for 5 hours in every day; the untreated control group were put in the standard living environment next to the wind tunnel; the treated control group were exposed to the same wind tunnel simulation of sandstorm for 5 hours in every day, and the speed of wind was the same as the experimental group, but excluding dust.

Effect of a group educational intervention on rural Chinese women's knowledge and attitudes about human papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccines.

Background: Statistics regarding HPV prevalence and cervical cancer rates in rural China are high, however, low levels of HPV awareness and HPV-related knowledge pose a great challenge for cervical cancer control.

Methods: The authors conducted an educational intervention study, which was embedded in a cervical cancer screening project in Yangcheng county, Shanxi Province, China from October to December, 2011 and was designed to assess the short-term effectiveness of a hospital-based, brief, HPV-focused session on rural Chinese women's knowledge and attitudes. Student's t-test was used when comparing quantitative variables.

Melt-metaphyseal and diphyseal osteotomy for correction of infantile Blount's disease: a long-term follow-up study.

Blount's disease is an uncommon disorder of postero-medial proximal tibial physis. Blount described infantile and adolescent types. This study aims to describe using femur, tibia and fibula osteotomies to treat infantile Blount's disease.

Objectives: The study aims to explore the relationship between expressions of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on peripheral blood monocytes, serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in patients with acute coronary syndromes(ACS), and to investigate the possible mechanisms of Benazepril stabilizing atherosclerosis plaques.

Methods: 70 patients selected were randomly divided into Benazepril treatment group (35 patients) and regular treatment group (35 patients). Meanwhile, Stable angina pectoris (SAP) group of 32 patients and control group of 22 patients were also set up.

Effects of endomorphins on human umbilical vein endothelial cells under high glucose.

The endomorphin-1 (EM1) and endomorphin-2 (EM2) are endogenous opioid peptides, which modulate extensive bioactivities such as pain, cardiovascular responses, immunological responses and so on. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of EM1/EM2 on the primary cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) damaged by high glucose. PI AnnexinV-FITC detection was performed to evaluate the apoptosis rate.

Octreotide for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of octreotide in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma participants on the basis of randomized controlled trials.

Methods: We searched the Cochrane Center Register of Controlled Trials in The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China Journal Full-text Database, Chinese Scientific Journals Database up to June 2008 in any language. Randomized controlled trials of octreotide for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma were selected and evaluated by two investigators.

[Measurement on bone density of children's mandible by quantitative computed tomography].

Objective: To explore the change of bone density of children's mandible measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT).

Methods: 71 children aged between 10-16 years were measured by QCT in left mandible angle, middle of mandible and right mandible angle. The differences were analyzed according to the age and sex respectively.

Downregulation of survivin by RNAi inhibits growth of human gastric carcinoma cells.

Aim: To investigate the inhibitory effect of a specific small survivin interfering RNA (siRNA) on cell proliferation and the expression of survivin in human gastric carcinoma cell line SGC-7901.

Methods: To knockdown survivin expression, a small interfering RNA targeting against survivin was synthesized and transfected into SGC-7901 cells with lipofectamine 2000. The downregulation of survivin expression at both mRNA and protein levels were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot analysis.

Endomorphins restored the endothelium-dependent relaxation of the rabbit aorta rings exposed to high D-glucose condition via NO-cGMP pathway.

Rings of rabbit aorta that were both incubated in a high concentration of D-glucose and contracted submaximally by phenylephrine showed significantly decreased endothelium-dependent relaxations induced by acetylcholine. The cGMP production of aorta rings was also reduced. Treatment with endomorphins (1-1000 nmol/L) restored acetylcholine-induced relaxations of aorta rings incubated in high glucose concentrations and increased the cGMP synthesis.
