As an important element of the human body, iron participates in numerous physiological and biochemical reactions. In the past decade, ferroptosis (a form of iron-dependent regulated cell death) has been reported to contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of various diseases. The stability of iron in cardiomyocytes is crucial for the maintenance of normal physiological cardiac activity.

Hippo pathway is an evolutionarily conservative key pathway that regulates organ size and tissue regeneration by regulating cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP)/ WW domain-containing transcription regulator 1 (TAZ) serves as a pivotal transcription factor within the Hippo signaling pathway, which undergoes negative regulation by the Hippo pathway. The expression of YAP/TAZ affects various biological processes, including differentiation of osteoblasts (OB) and osteoclasts (OC), cartilage homeostasis, skeletal muscle development, regeneration and quality maintenance.

BACKGROUND Recently, the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) has been suggested as a valuable biomarker for adverse events in acute myocardial infarction. However, the prognostic value of ACR in very elderly patients (≥80 years) with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 354 very elderly patients with NSTE-ACS who underwent PCI were included in this study and followed up for 1 year.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are present in the tumor microenvironment and can polarize into subtypes with different functions and characteristics in response to different stimuli, classifying them into anti-tumorigenic M1-type and pro-tumorigenic M2-type. The M1-type macrophages inhibit tumor growth through the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, whereas the M2-type macrophages contribute to tumor progression through the promotion of tumor proliferation, angiogenesis and metastasis. Due to the duality of macrophage effects on tumors, TAMs have been a hot topic in tumor research.

Department of Orthopaedics, The People's Hospital of Liaoning Province, 33 Wenyi Road, Shenyang, 110016, Liaoning, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis is a significant secondary cause of osteoporosis, and this study investigates the role of elevated Cullin-1 (CUL1) in this condition.
  • Using a mouse model, researchers injected dexamethasone to induce osteoporosis and examined bone injury, cell death, and bone formation through various techniques.
  • The findings revealed that silencing CUL1 can reduce osteoporosis effects by inhibiting its promotion of ASAP1 degradation, which negatively impacts bone formation and leads to increased cell death.

Background: Prior research has demonstrated a discrepancy between pathologic and clinical staging in individuals with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). These findings were the major reasons for the under-usage of the bladder preservation strategy. Hence, we aim to explore the reliable markers in identifying pathological complete response (ypCR) status in MIBC patients who achieved clinical complete response (cCR) after NAC.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies hint at connections between the TERT gene, shorter telomere length in white blood cells, and cerebrovascular disease, but the specific links haven't been confirmed.
  • Researchers analyzed TERT gene variations in 307 cerebrovascular disease patients and 320 healthy individuals, using genetic models to assess the relationship between these variations and the disease.
  • Results showed two gene variations significantly associated with the disease, and further analysis suggested that shorter telomeres could be causally linked to a higher risk of cerebrovascular disease.

Echocardiography is a key tool for the diagnosis of cardiac diseases, and accurate left ventricular (LV) segmentation in echocardiographic videos is crucial for the assessment of cardiac function. However, since semantic segmentation of video needs to take into account the temporal correlation between frames, this makes the task very challenging. This article introduces an innovative method that incorporates a modified mixed attention mechanism into the SegFormer architecture, enabling it to effectively grasp the temporal correlation present in video data.

DECNet: Left Atrial Pulmonary Vein Class Imbalance Classification Network.

J Imaging Inform Med

August 2024

School of Computer, Shenyang Aerospace University, Daoyi South Street, 110135, ShenYan, Liaoning Province, China.

In clinical practice, the anatomical classification of pulmonary veins plays a crucial role in the preoperative assessment of atrial fibrillation radiofrequency ablation surgery. Accurate classification of pulmonary vein anatomy assists physicians in selecting appropriate mapping electrodes and avoids causing pulmonary arterial hypertension. Due to the diverse and subtly different anatomical classifications of pulmonary veins, as well as the imbalance in data distribution, deep learning models often exhibit poor expression capability in extracting deep features, leading to misjudgments and affecting classification accuracy.
