In this essay, I utilize a historical methodology into Catholic thought on abortion, looking toward the foundational viewpoint of original sin as justification for the need to baptize infants for the sake of their salvation. Then, I highlight how abortion has developed and shifted throughout the twentieth century vis-à-vis Papal Encyclicals and Vatican II. Strikingly, there is a resounding silence on the soteriology of aborted fetuses in Canon Law.

J Pediatr Urol

Kidney and Urinary Tract Center, Abigail Wexner Resesarch Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus OH, USA; Department of Pediatric Urology, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus OH, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if socioeconomic and demographic factors are predictors of follow-up attendance in pediatric patients after kidney stone surgery.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 195 pediatric patients who underwent various surgical interventions for kidney stones between 2016 and 2020, focusing on follow-up visit attendance, imaging completion, and urine studies.
  • Key findings indicated that lower socioeconomic status, such as public insurance and single-parent households, was linked to decreased follow-up compliance, while prior urology clinic visits increased the likelihood of attending post-op appointments.

Background: A prior survey disseminated in 2017 identified that healthcare access barriers exist and significantly affect patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We sought to identify, through an updated survey, the healthcare access barriers that patients continue to face, with a focus on socioeconomic factors and patient awareness of resources to navigate existing barriers.

Methods: A 52-question online survey evaluating (1) access to healthcare professionals, medications, and procedures; (2) associated financial challenges; and (3) patient awareness of education and advocacy tools to navigate IBD care barriers, was disseminated through multiple channels to IBD patients and their caregivers.

North American bison (Bovidae: Bison bison) incur blunt impacts to the interparietal and frontal bones when they engage in head-to-head fights. To investigate the impact mitigation of these bones, a finite element analysis (FEA) of the skull under loading conditions was performed. Based on anatomical and histological studies, the interparietal and frontal bones are both comprised of a combination of haversian and plexiform bone and are both underlain by bony septa.

Article Synopsis
  • * A comprehensive literature search found 25 relevant studies indicating that while cervical collars can improve short-term outcomes and pain control for fusion procedures, they do not significantly affect fusion rates.
  • * For motion-preserving surgeries like cervical laminoplasty, extended use of collars may lead to increased neck pain and reduced range of motion, suggesting their benefits diminish over time.

Purpose: Injectable biologics have not only been described and developed to treat dermal wounds, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, but have also been reported to treat chronic pain conditions. Despite emerging evidence supporting regenerative medicine therapy for pain, many aspects remain controversial.

Methods: The American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN) identified the educational need for an evidence-based guideline on regenerative medicine therapy for chronic pain.

Article Synopsis
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are becoming a common first-line treatment for solid tumors but can cause immune-related adverse events (irAE), including lung inflammation.
  • A study reported cases of patients who developed reactive airways disease after receiving ICI therapy, even though they had no prior history of respiratory issues and showed no signs of lung inflammation on scans.
  • The patients responded well to standard treatments for reactive airways disease, allowing many of them to continue their ICI therapy while experiencing symptom relief.

December 2024

Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Department of Internal Medicine, The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Introduction: Alcohol related liver disease (ALD) affects diverse communities with individual and social characteristics that can impact outcomes. The social vulnerability index (SVI) assigns a score between 0 and 1, where higher scores represent an increased risk of social vulnerability. We sought to assess the impact of SVI on outcomes of patients hospitalized with ALD with access to social support services.

Article Synopsis
  • * A new device called a "ventilator-on-a-chip" (VOC) has been developed to mimic lung conditions and can measure how mechanical forces, like over-distention and surface tension during reopening, affect lung barrier integrity.
  • * The study showed that while over-distention has a recoverable impact on lung barriers, surface tension forces from airway reopening cause more significant and prolonged damage, highlighting the VOC's ability to investigate and monitor VILI in real-time.

Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic illness where patients may undergo ostomy surgery. Medical decision-making (MDM) for ostomy surgery is complex for patients/families and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (HCPs) alike, with current uncertainty about how multidisciplinary HCPs think about ostomy care to inform future interventions to facilitate equitable multidisciplinary care for patients. This study sought to understand pediatric IBD multidisciplinary HCPs' perceptions regarding ostomy-related MDM and education.

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) face communication challenges stemming from neural lesions, hearing issues, and executive function impairments, which are further complicated by interactions between motor and hearing impairments. These challenges lead to limitations in daily activities and are compounded by delays in diagnosis and interventions, adversely affecting speech, language, and cognitive function. In infants with CP, impaired motor function disrupts both feedforward and feedback mechanisms crucial for speech sound production, exacerbating the overall impact on communication development.

Burn injury contributes to significant morbidity and mortality in the United States. Despite an increased focus on racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare, there remains a critical knowledge gap in our understanding of the effect of these disparities on complications experienced by burn patients. The American Burn Association's National Burn Repository data were reviewed from 2010-2018.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer care with incredible reductions in mortality. One of the most devastating complications of treatment is ICI-related pneumonitis (ICI-p). Despite this, little is known regarding risk factors for severe pneumonitis and treatment effectiveness of various therapeutic options for steroid-refractory disease.

Background: Cardiovascular health literacy (CVHL) and social determinants of health (SDoH) play interconnected and critical roles in shaping cardiovascular health (CVH) outcomes. However, awareness of CVH risk has declined markedly, from 65% of women being aware that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for women in 2009 to just 44% being aware in 2019. The American Heart Association Research Goes Red (RGR) initiative seeks to develop an open-source, longitudinal, dynamic registry that will help women to be aware of and participate in research studies, and to learn about CVD prevention.

Social determinants of health and depressive symptoms before and after cancer diagnosis.

J Women Aging

September 2024

Nursing Research, The James Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Despite frequent reports of mental health needs among older women with cancer, depressive symptoms often go unrecognized and untreated, particularly in socially vulnerable survivors. Here, we examined associations of sociodemographic factors and social limitations with depressive symptoms from pre-diagnosis to post-diagnosis in older women diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (SEER-MHOS) linked dataset, we used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between sociodemographic factors (race, ethnicity, marital status, rurality) and social limitations (i.
