Introduction: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become a viable alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for high-risk patients with aortic stenosis. One such high-risk group is patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), which is known to increase surgical risk and adversely affect outcomes. This study aims to compare midterm and long-term survival in TAVR and SAVR among patients with PH.

Protein-Enabled Size-Selective Defect-Sealing of Atomically Thin 2D Membranes for Dialysis and Nanoscale Separations.

Atomically thin 2D materials present the potential for advancing membrane separations via a combination of high selectivity (from molecular sieving) and high permeance (due to atomic thinness). However, the creation of a high density of precise nanopores (narrow-size-distribution) over large areas in 2D materials remains challenging, and nonselective leakage from nanopore heterogeneity adversely impacts performance. Here, we demonstrate protein-enabled size-selective defect sealing (PDS) for atomically thin graphene membranes over centimeter scale areas by leveraging the size and reactivity of permeating proteins to preferentially seal larger nanopores (≥4 nm) while preserving a significant amount of smaller nanopores (via steric hindrance).

Adolescent transition preparation around the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study.

Objective: To compare preparation for transition in adolescents in the United States prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Study Design: We used data from the 2019 and 2021 National Survey of Children's Health to compare transition preparation before and after the COVID-19 pandemic among adolescents who had a medical care visit within the preceding year, controlled for relevant potential confounders. The association of demographic factors and survey year with a composite measure of adequate transition preparation was evaluated using univariable analysis and multivariable logistic regression.

Background: Modern techniques in lower extremity amputation have made significant advances to improve prosthetic control and soft-tissue envelopes through various techniques, including medial thighplasties. Early Palliative Care Following Aborted Cancer Surgery: Results of a Prospective Feasibility Trial.

Background: Although resection is generally necessary for curative-intent treatment of most solid organ cancers, surgery is occasionally aborted due to intraoperative findings. Following aborted cancer surgery, patients have unique care needs that specialized palliative care (PC) providers may be best equipped to manage. Non-invasive removal of a misplaced and knotted guidewire during ultrasound-guided central venous catheter insertion in a hybrid operating room: a case report.

Background: The standard of care for placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) includes a real-time ultrasound (US)-guided technique. We describe a rare case in which the guidewire penetrated the posterior wall of the vessel, forming a knot, which precluded simple removal. This occurred despite the procedure being performed under real-time US guidance.

The Fifth Annual Midwest Aging Consortium Aging Research symposium, held from April 28-30, 2024, was hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and featured presentations from investigators across the Midwestern United States.
