Recent advances in electrolyte molecular design for alkali metal batteries.

In response to societal developments and the growing demand for high-energy-density battery systems, alkali metal batteries (AMBs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage. Despite their high theoretical specific capacity and output voltage, AMBs face critical challenges related to high reactivity with electrolytes and unstable interphases. This review, from the perspective of electrolytes, analyzes AMB failure mechanisms, including interfacial side reactions, active materials loss, and metal dendrite growth.

Making Space in Geographical Analysis.

In this commentary we reflect on the potential and power of geographical analysis, as a set of methods, theoretical approaches, and perspectives, to increase our understanding of how space and place matter for . We emphasize key aspects of the field, including accessibility, urban change, and spatial interaction and behavior, providing a high-level research agenda that indicates a variety of gaps and routes for future research that will not only lead to more equitable and aware solutions to local and global challenges, but also innovative and novel research methods, concepts, and data. We close with a set of representation and inclusion challenges to our discipline, researchers, and publication outlets.

Objectives: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important public health problem resulting in significant death and disability. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel often provide initial treatment for TBI, but only limited data describe the long-term course and outcomes of this care. We sought to characterize changes in neurologic status among adults with TBI patients enrolled in the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Hypertonic Saline (ROC-HS) trial.

Noninvasive respiratory support in the emergency department: Controversies and state-of-the-art recommendations.

Acute respiratory failure is a common reason for emergency department visits and hospital admissions. Diverse underlying physiologic abnormalities lead to unique aspects about the most common causes of acute respiratory failure: acute decompensated heart failure, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and acute de novo hypoxemic respiratory failure. Noninvasive respiratory support strategies are increasingly used methods to support work of breathing and improve gas exchange abnormalities to improve outcomes relative to conventional oxygen therapy or invasive mechanical ventilation.

Spin polarized electron dynamics enhance water splitting efficiency by yttrium iron garnet photoanodes: a new platform for spin selective photocatalysis.

This work presents a spectroscopic and photocatalytic comparison of water splitting using yttrium iron garnet (YFeO, YIG) and hematite (α-FeO) photoanodes. Despite similar electronic structures, YIG significantly outperforms widely studied hematite, displaying more than an order of magnitude increase in photocurrent density. Probing the charge and spin dynamics by ultrafast, surface-sensitive XUV spectroscopy reveals that the enhanced performance arises from (1) reduced polaron formation in YIG compared to hematite and (2) an intrinsic spin polarization of catalytic photocurrents in YIG.

Detection of driver mutations and genomic signatures in endometrial cancers using artificial intelligence algorithms.

Analyzed endometrial cancer (EC) genomes have allowed for the identification of molecular signatures, which enable the classification, and sometimes prognostication, of these cancers. Artificial intelligence algorithms have facilitated the partitioning of mutations into driver and passenger based on a variety of parameters, including gene function and frequency of mutation. Here, we undertook an evaluation of EC cancer genomes deposited on the Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancers (COSMIC), with the goal to classify all mutations as either driver or passenger.

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound velocities in a population of unstudied African children with sickle cell anemia.

The greatest burden of sickle cell anemia (SCA) globally occurs in sub-Saharan Africa, where significant morbidity and mortality occur secondary to SCA-induced vasculopathy and stroke. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) can grade the severity of vasculopathy, with disease modifying therapy resulting in stroke reduction in high-risk children. However, TCD utilization for vasculopathy detection in African children with SCA remains understudied.

Association of Socioeconomic Status With Life's Essential 8 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey: Effect Modification by Sex.

Background: Higher scores for the American Heart Association Life's Essential 8 (LE8) metrics, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, sleep, and diet, are associated with lower risk of chronic disease. Socioeconomic status (SES; employment, insurance, education, and income) is associated with LE8 scores, but there is limited understanding of potential differences by sex. This analysis quantifies the association of SES with LE8 for each sex, within Hispanic Americans, non-Hispanic Asian Americans, non-Hispanic Black Americans, and non-Hispanic White Americans.

Comparing Multivisceral Resection with Tumor-only Resection of Liposarcoma Using the Win Ratio.

Background: Multivisceral resection of retroperitoneal liposarcoma (LPS) is associated with increased morbidity and may not confer a survival benefit compared with tumor-only (TO) resection. We compared both approaches using a novel statistical method called the "win ratio" (WR).

Methods: Patients who underwent resection of LPS from 2004 to 2015 were identified from the National Cancer Database.

Understanding clerkship experiences in emergency medicine and their potential influence on specialty selection: A qualitative study.

Objectives: The specialty of emergency medicine (EM) is experiencing a significant decrease in student interest. In addition, women are historically underrepresented within the specialty at all levels of training and practice. We sought to understand how clinical experiences and perceptions of EM influence specialty selection by medical students, particularly women.

Systemic Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin Alterations in Chronic Pancreatitis: A Multicenter, Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a progressive fibroinflammatory disorder lacking therapies and biomarkers. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a proinflammatory cytokine elevated during inflammation that binds fatty acids (FAs) such as linoleic acid. We hypothesized that systemic NGAL could serve as a biomarker for CP and, with FAs, provide insights into inflammatory and metabolic alterations.

Screening for problematic opioid use in the emergency department: Comparison of two screening measures.

Study Objective: Earlier intervention for opioid use disorder (OUD) may reduce long-term health implications. Emergency departments (EDs) in the United States treat millions with OUD annually who may not seek care elsewhere. Our objectives were (1) to compare two screening measures for OUD characterization in the ED and (2) to determine the proportion of ED patients screening positive for OUD and those who endorse other substance use to guide future screening programs.

Exploring the Role of Hyperinsulinemia in Obesity-Associated Tumor Development.

Although there has been a long-standing connection between hyperinsulinemia and cancer development, there is a lack of understanding of the role of the insulin receptor on cells that can become cancerous. In a recent issue of Cell Metabolism, Zhang and colleagues, using a diet-induced obesity mouse model, identified a direct function of insulin receptors on pancreatic acinar cells expressing a KRASG12D mutation in promoting obesity-associated pancreatic cancer. Furthermore, insulin receptor signaling from hyperinsulinemia promoted the secretion of digestive enzymes that contributed to acinar to ductal metaplasia.

Introduction: We examined whether the Dualistic Model of Passion (DMP; i.e., obsessive passion [OP] and harmonious passion [HP]) for cannabis use was prospectively associated with cannabis use and use-related outcomes, and with academic performance, relationship attachment style, and social connectedness among college students.

Potential therapies targeting nuclear metabolic regulation in cancer.

The interplay between genetic alterations and metabolic dysregulation is increasingly recognized as a pivotal axis in cancer pathogenesis. Both elements are mutually reinforcing, thereby expediting the ontogeny and progression of malignant neoplasms. Intriguingly, recent findings have highlighted the translocation of metabolites and metabolic enzymes from the cytoplasm into the nuclear compartment, where they appear to be intimately associated with tumor cell proliferation.
