Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) remain at the forefront of research for a variety of applications including ultra-high-temperature ceramics, energy storage and functional coatings. Despite their wide use, questions remain about the complex structural transition from polymer to ceramic and how local structure influences the final microstructure and resulting properties. This is further complicated when nanofillers are introduced to tailor structural and functional properties, as nanoparticle surfaces can interact with the matrix and influence the resulting structure.

Background: Both cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are the leading causes of death worldwide. Although our previous study detected a relationship between CVD and cancer incidence, limited evidence is available regarding the relationship between CVD, cardiovascular risk factors, and cancer mortality.
Methods And Results: A prospective cohort study using data from the continuous NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2016) merged with Medicare and National Death Index mortality data, through December 31, 2018.
Analysis of single extracellular vesicles (EVs) has the potential to yield valuable label-free information on their morphological structure, biomarkers and therapeutic targets, though such analysis is hindered by the lack of reliable and quantitative measurements of the mechanical properties of these compliant nanoscale particles. The technical challenge in mechanical property measurements arises from the existing tools and methods that offer limited throughput, and the reported elastic moduli range over several orders of magnitude. Here, we report on a flow-based method complemented by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging to provide a high throughput, whole EV deformation analysis for estimating the mechanical properties of liposarcoma-derived EVs as a function of their size.

Introduction: Older adults with chronic disease prioritize functional independence. We aimed to describe the feasibility of capturing functional disability and treatment toxicity among older adults with lung cancer using a longitudinal comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and molecular biomarkers of aging.
Methods: This prospective study included adults ≥60 years with any newly diagnosed non-small-cell lung cancer.

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is an imaging technique that assesses tissue shear properties and combined with quantitative MRI metrics reflective of composition can inform structure-function of the IVD. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare MRE- and rheometry-derived shear modulus in agarose gels and nucleus pulposus (NP) tissue and (2) correlate MRE and rheological measures of NP tissue with composition and quantitative MRI.

Objective: Identify the benefits and caveats of combining minimal access approaches to the infratemporal fossa (ITF), such as the endoscopic transnasal, endoscopic transorbital, endoscopic transoral, and endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary approaches to address extensive lesions not amenable to a single approach. The study provides anatomical metrics including area of exposure and degree of surgical freedom.
Methods: Five human cadaveric specimens (10 sides) were dissected to expose and methodically analyze the anatomical intricacies of the ITF using the following minimal access approaches: endoscopic transnasal transpterygoid (EETA), endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary, endoscopic transorbital via infraorbital foramen, and endoscopic transoral techniques.
Background: Hypertension is a stroke risk factor with known disparities in prevalence and management between Black and White patients. We sought to identify if racial differences in presenting blood pressure (BP) during acute ischemic stroke exist.
Methods And Results: Adults with acute ischemic stroke presenting to an emergency department within 24 hours of last known normal during study epochs 2005, 2010, and 2015 within the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Study were included.

The nickel-iron carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) enzyme uses a heterometallic nickel-iron-sulfur ([NiFeS]) cluster to catalyze the reversible interconversion of carbon dioxide (CO) and carbon monoxide (CO). These reactions are essential for maintaining the global carbon cycle and offer a route towards sustainable greenhouse gas conversion but have not been successfully replicated in synthetic models, in part due to a poor understanding of the natural system. Though the general protein architecture of CODH is known, the electronic structure of the active site is not well-understood, and the mechanism of catalysis remains unresolved.

Method: A preclinical cadaveric study followed by application on a case series of BVFP patients. After the preliminary study executed to precisely localize the optimal sites for needle insertion, a prospective interventional study was conducted on 19 subjects presenting with respiratory distress due to BVFP.

Fluorescence bioimaging with near-infrared II (NIR-II) emissive organic fluorophores has proven to be a viable noninvasive diagnostic technique. However, there is still the need for the development of fluorophores that possess increased stability as well as functionalities that impart stimuli responsiveness. Through strategic design, we can synthesize fluorophores that possess not only NIR-II optical profiles but also pH-sensitivity and the ability to generate heat upon irradiation.
