Purpose: Pre-operative eating disorders are well documented within the metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) population, yet subthreshold dieting attempts are less understood. The objectives of this study were to define and categorize patients' preoperative dieting attempts, and to determine how attempts are associated with postoperative outcomes, eating disorders, and demographics.
Materials And Methods: Three hundred twenty-one patients (81.

Objective: Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is typically managed with long-term broad-spectrum antibiotics. The impact of surgical intervention on clinical outcomes is not well described. This study aims to compare clinical outcomes of MOE patients managed with or without surgery.

The sponsored and provider referred hATTR Compass Genetic Testing Program (Ionis, Carlsbad, CA; Ambry Genetics, Aliso Viejo, CA) provided no-cost genetic testing to adults with a family history or clinical suspicion of hATTR amyloidosis. This study aims to characterize patients with hATTR amyloidosis and increase awareness of genetic testing for hATTR.

However, it can be inadequate to cover wide defects or compromised by tumor invasion or prior surgery requiring additional reconstructive options.

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic required unprecedented changes to emergency medical services (EMS) educational frameworks in the United States. It is unclear if pandemic-related changes impacted paramedic educational outcomes. We aimed to evaluate curricular and performance changes resulting from the initial COVID-19 pandemic on paramedic educational programs.

We aimed to evaluate the current scope of cardiac arrest RCTs published between 2015 and 2022.
Methods: We conducted a search in October 2023 of MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science for cardiac arrest RCTs.
Objective: Topical corticosteroid irrigation plays critical role in the management of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Yet, its efficacy can be highly variable. We sought to determine if personalized, 3-dimensional (3D)-printed nasal models can optimize head positioning and irrigation parameters, therefore improving patient outcomes.

Objectives: Safety policies enacted in response to the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have greatly affected the working environments of emergency medical service (EMS) clinicians. Our objective was to evaluate whether changes in the EMS environment during the COVID-19 pandemic were associated with increased workplace conflict.
Methods: This evaluation was a cross-sectional analysis of a random sample of 19,497 national certified EMS clinicians who were selected to receive an electronic survey in April 2022.
Objective: To evaluate the readability, understandability, actionability, and accuracy of online resources covering vestibular migraine (VM).
Study Design: Cross-sectional descriptive study design.
Setting: Digital collection of websites appearing on Google search.

The interferon stimulated gene 15 (ISG15), a ubiquitin like protein and its conjugates have been implicated in various human malignancies. However, its role in ovarian cancer progression and metastasis is largely unknown. In high grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), ascites is the major contributor to peritoneal metastasis.

Here, we report workshop outcomes.
Methods: After a 1-h didactic on the basics of triage protocols, workshop participants rotated through three skill stations at which learners learned how to use the VR headset and controllers, practiced applying SALT triage skills through a tabletop exercise, and then finally used our VR simulator for training responses to MCIs.
Objective: The core content of emergency medicine (EM) residency training includes the management of oncologic emergencies; however, documented knowledge gaps continue to exist in this subtopic. This study represents a targeted needs assessment as indicated by Step 2 of Kern's curriculum design to determine the specific training gaps to be addressed within the oncologic EM curriculum.
Methods: A multi-institutional cross-sectional survey of oncologists (surgical and medical) and emergency physicians (attendings and residents) was conducted during 2023 at five institutions.
Background: In vivo quantification of the structure-function relationship of the intervertebral disc (IVD) via quantitative MRI has the potential to aid objective stratification of disease and evaluation of restorative therapies. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is an imaging technique that assesses tissue shear properties and combined with quantitative MRI metrics reflective of composition can inform structure-function of the IVD. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare MRE- and rheometry-derived shear modulus in agarose gels and nucleus pulposus (NP) tissue and (2) correlate MRE and rheological measures of NP tissue with composition and quantitative MRI.

Objective: Identify the benefits and caveats of combining minimal access approaches to the infratemporal fossa (ITF), such as the endoscopic transnasal, endoscopic transorbital, endoscopic transoral, and endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary approaches to address extensive lesions not amenable to a single approach. The study provides anatomical metrics including area of exposure and degree of surgical freedom.
Methods: Five human cadaveric specimens (10 sides) were dissected to expose and methodically analyze the anatomical intricacies of the ITF using the following minimal access approaches: endoscopic transnasal transpterygoid (EETA), endoscopic sublabial transmaxillary, endoscopic transorbital via infraorbital foramen, and endoscopic transoral techniques.
Healthcare systems face significant challenges in meeting the unique needs of older adults, particularly in the acute setting. Age-friendly healthcare is a comprehensive approach using the 4Ms framework-what matters, medications, mentation, and mobility-to ensure that healthcare settings are responsive to the needs of older patients. The Age-Friendly Emergency Department (AFED) is a crucial component of a holistic age-friendly health system.

Background: There is conflicting evidence as to the impact of mental health treatment on outcomes in patients with heart disease. The aim of this study was to examine whether individuals who received mental health treatment for anxiety or depression after being hospitalized for ischemic disorders or heart failure had a reduced frequency of rehospitalizations, emergency department visits, or mortality compared with those who did not receive treatment.
Methods And Results: A population-based, retrospective, cohort design was used to examine the association between psychotherapy or antidepressant medication prescription and health service utilization and mortality in patients with coronary artery disease or heart failure and comorbid anxiety or depression.

In conversation with endometrial tumor cells, the endometrial cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are the "partners in crime" of uterine neoplasm's highly heterogeneous tumor microenvironment (TME). We designed a laboratory-friendly method to culture endometrial CAFs on a patient-to-patient basis for studying the CAF-TME and CAF-tumor cell interaction(s). Here, we present a comprehensive characterization of endometrial CAFs derived from patients' tumor tissues (T) and tumor-adjacent normal tissues (N).

Background: Higher scores for the American Heart Association Life's Essential 8 (LE8) metrics, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, sleep, and diet, are associated with lower risk of chronic disease. Socioeconomic status (SES; employment, insurance, education, and income) is associated with LE8 scores, but there is limited understanding of potential differences by sex. This analysis quantifies the association of SES with LE8 for each sex, within Hispanic Americans, non-Hispanic Asian Americans, non-Hispanic Black Americans, and non-Hispanic White Americans.

Background: Multivisceral resection of retroperitoneal liposarcoma (LPS) is associated with increased morbidity and may not confer a survival benefit compared with tumor-only (TO) resection. We compared both approaches using a novel statistical method called the "win ratio" (WR).
Methods: Patients who underwent resection of LPS from 2004 to 2015 were identified from the National Cancer Database.

Background: Data on the use of implanted hemodynamic monitoring (IHM) in patients with Fontan circulation are limited. This study reports our experience using the CardioMEMS HF system in adults with Fontan circulation.
Methods And Results: This single-center, retrospective study evaluated heart failure hospitalizations, procedural complications, and device-related complications in patients with Fontan circulation referred for IHM placement (2015-2022).
