Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how cancer cells influence the fitness of surrounding tumor microenvironment (TME) cells through a mechanism involving a long non-coding RNA called Tu-Stroma, which alters the expression of Flower isoforms, impacting their growth advantage.
  • The expression of Flower Win isoforms in cancer cells enhances their dominance over TME cells that express Flower Lose isoforms, leading to reduced fitness in the TME.
  • Targeting Flower proteins with a humanized monoclonal antibody in mice has shown promising results, significantly reducing cancer growth and metastasis while improving survival rates and protecting organs from potential lesions.

Background: Previous studies found that Midlife Baseline PSA (MB PSA) predicts the risk of developing lethal prostate cancer (PCa), although the cohorts were homogenous in terms of racial compositions. We aimed to investigate racial disparities in the predictive value of MB PSA for lethal PCa in a diverse, contemporary, North American population.

Methods: Our cohort included White and Black men aged 40-59 years, who underwent MB PSA through our health system.

Background: We sought to characterize the benefit of lymphadenectomy among patients undergoing curative-intent surgery for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA) utilizing the therapeutic index.

Methods: Data on patients who underwent curative-intent resection for pCCA were obtained from 8 high-volume international hepatobiliary centers. Multivariable Cox regression analysis was used to assess clinicopathological factors associated with overall survival (OS).

Designing and Delivering a Poetry Workshop for Clinician Well-Being During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Study.

J Pain Symptom Manage

December 2024

Division of Palliative Medicine (S.R., B.W.), Wexner Medical Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. Electronic address:

Context: Facilitated poetry writing workshops are used in healthcare settings as a therapeutic approach to address stressful factors that negatively influence clinician well-being. However, owing to the novelty of this intervention and a tendency to combine poetry with other types of narrative-based techniques, proponents of poetic medicine are calling for harmonization across programs in the US. This would facilitate the study of poetry in medicine and the multiple facets of well-being it is said to promote.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the 7th most common cancer globally with a 40-50 % survival rate. Although macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is overexpressed in most solid tumors and promotes tumor growth and invasion, the therapeutic potential of MIF inhibition in HNSCC is yet to be explored. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of CPSI-1306, a small-molecule MIF inhibitor, on HNSCC cell growth and cancer associated signaling pathways in vitro, as well as its impact on T cells in the HNSCC tumor microenvironment in vivo.

Your chemo is no good here: management of high-risk MCL.

Hematology Am Soc Hematol Educ Program

December 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology, Arthur G. James Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, OH.

Historically considered a lymphoma with limited treatment options and poor outcomes, the treatment landscape in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) has evolved remarkably in the last decade. Chemoimmunotherapy (CIT) remains the primary frontline treatment for most patients with MCL, typically with an intensive approach in younger and fit patients. The role of consolidative autologous stem cell transplantation remains controversial, with recent data further questioning its benefit.

Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Despite American Association of Endocrine Surgeons guidelines that recommend bone mineral density (BMD) assessment via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) for PHPT patients, adherence to these guidelines remains suboptimal.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of preoperative and postoperative DEXA scan practices among PHPT patients at a single academic medical center between 2000 and 2018.

Background: The Fast Real-time Assessment of Combination Therapies in Immuno-ONcology study in patients with aRCC (FRACTION-RCC) was designed to assess new immuno-oncology (IO) combinations in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (aRCC). We present results in IO-naive patients treated with nivolumab (NIVO) + relatlimab (RELA) or NIVO + ipilimumab (IPI) in track 1.

Methods: The open-label, randomised, phase II FRACTION-RCC trial enrolled patients with aRCC from 32 hospitals and cancer centres across six countries.

Department of Neurology and Experimental Neurology, Clinical and Experimental Spinal Cord Injury Research (Neuroparaplegiology), Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, corporate member of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Berlin Institute of Health, Berlin, Germany.

Importance: Pressure ulcers (PUs) are (1) prevalent secondary complications after spinal cord injury (SCI), (2) present with elevated systemic inflammatory tone, and (3) may interfere with healing processes underlying neurological recovery (disrepair).

Objective: To investigate whether PUs acquired during initial hospitalization are associated with neurological and functional long-term outcome and survival after SCI.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Multicenter cohort study at 20 centers of the prospective SCI Model Systems (SCIMS) Database (Birmingham, AL).

The use of non-specific language to describe board-certified dermatologists in academic settings obscures the public understanding of their qualifications. This study analyzes online patient reviews nationwide to assess gender differences in the terminology used to describe academic dermatologists. We conducted a cross-sectional study, examining reviews from 62 academic institutions across 39 states, analyzing the use of terms such as "provider," "practitioner," "clinician," "health care professional," "physician," "dermatologist," and "doctor.

Practical application of precision oncology in adult onset craniopharyngiomas.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

December 2024

Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre, Columbus, OH, United States.

Introduction: Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) are benign and rare tumors found in adults. Their location close to vital neurovascular structures makes traditional treatment modalities (surgery and radiation) challenging and potentially fraught with morbidity. The 2021 WHO classification has divided what was previously considered two subtypes of craniopharyngioma into separate entities.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the relationship between pain, stress, and mental health in people living with Alzheimer's disease (PLWAD) and their family caregivers, highlighting the impact of these factors on caregiver burden.
  • - Five PLWAD-caregiver pairs participated, providing data through questionnaires and hair samples for cortisol analysis to understand the connections between pain, stress, and mental health.
  • - Results indicated unexpected trends: while PLWAD's pain and mental health were negatively correlated with hair cortisol levels, caregivers' pain and mental health showed a positive correlation, suggesting a complex dynamic that could inform future interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • Kv channels contribute to the A-type current in bushy neurons of the cochlear nucleus, which regulates neuronal excitability and is essential for processing temporal information in hearing.
  • Using Jingzhaotoxin-X (JZ-X), researchers discovered that blocking this current increased excitability in bushy neurons and affected their firing behavior during high-rate activity.
  • Findings indicate that while A-type currents are important for maintaining temporal processing in aging bushy neurons, changes in TEA-sensitive Kv currents are more indicative of the altered neuronal properties contributing to age-related hearing loss.
